Filing a patent is a highly strategic enterprise. It is public, expensive and there are alternatives. Of course it depends on the industry. In some cases there are no options. Putting patent pending on merchandise is a strategy many have followed. You need not even complete the filing. In so many cases it is unnecessary. The main takeaway is to not let anything stop you. A patent is an expensive, and many times unworkable, picket fence. Suppose there is a patent infringement? To prove it will take years and cost tens of thousands, if not hundreds and you may not even win. If you do win, you can recover.
