What is an IPA? Is it defined by dank, musty, earthy, piney, resinous flavor and aroma? Or perhaps the IPA is defined by bursts of orange, grapefruit, and lemon, or stone fruit, mango, and pineapple? Or, does the IPA taste and smell exactly like children's drinks from the 1980's? It's hard to tell anymore and it's also possible that nobody even knows....or cares. We investigate in this video by examining a new and unique IPA - Fruit Force IPA, by New Belgium, as well as a homemade coconut IPA. Our goal is to determine exactly which one is an actual IPA and which, if any, are not.

IPA may be dead for home brewers but as a professional brewer and brewery sales manager I can tell you the IPA (and it's variants) are not going anywhere anytime soon on a commercial scale. Just review the brewer's association sales data. Those numbers combine production and sales and those numbers don't lie.

@@sk8nchill52 I'm just saying that because Claw hammer Supply is mostly a Homebrew shop and most of their content is geared towards home brewers. IPA'S are not bad style, but breweries are making too much ipas with some weird hops and they can't keep that simple. Best Ipa i drank was Single hop (mosaic) double ipa, it had only pilsen malt, sugar, and mosaic hops. That aroma was really something out of the other galaxy, but of course breweries have to mix 10 hops at once, and that makes every ipa taste pretty much the same.

To say I'm not an IPA fan is an understatement, of the many I've sampled I can count the number I didn't immediately dislike on my hands likely with room to double that number. Not saying breweries shouldn't make them, they just aren't for me, but I do see how breweries trying to stand out within the style (and others) have gone overboard and moreso seem to be trying to pull in a less discerning, less beer educated crowd. It's really similar to the proliferation of nasty, sweet "pastry" stouts and porters which are a generally loathsome take on styles I do like. While I am admittedly a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to beer styles I am not opposed to some crazy experimentation, in fact while I almost always dislike the addition of lactose to porters and stouts, I've actually found that the addition of lactose often tames a lot of what I dislike in an IPA. Unfortunately as many breweries are bought up by large conglomerates we will likely continue to see them attempting to find the sort of mass market appeal that is almost the opposite of what craft brewing does really well, which often works great in a local/regional market but not so much in a national mass distribution. Given that I have around 30 breweries within a reasonable drive I don't really bother much with nationally distributed beers other than some occasional purchases, and those tend to be imported or barrel finished beers.

Has something changed with IPAs and hoppy styles in general. To me all of them tends to taste the same boring almost stale "generic hop". I rarely get the juicy pungent hop flavors anymore. Are hop crops changing somehow (climate? something else?). Or is my palate changing? I don't remember hoppy beers tasting like this (even the good ol' well known beers). Also I don't think I am getting numb of the hops because last couple of years I have been steering away from hoppy styles and I have been drinking more of those cleaner and balanced styles like German and Czech lagers and milder Porters etc.

Obviously a clickbait title, but it's a conversation worth having. IPAs (particularly hazy) have taken over in such a huge way. The way sours did for a minute. Many breweries make mediocre beers and can hide it by dropping several hazies at once on their tap list. Some are amazing. Even the milkshakes. I make a mango coconut milkshake and it's delicious. But I fear it's put a lot of breweries in a spot where they aren't actually producing amazing beers, and they're neglecting styles that are more nuanced and approachable. I'd love to see some balance start to come back in the next year or two.

There is an infamous Coconut IPA recipe in the UK founded by a couple of homebrewers (one of which is now a pro-brewer). The recipe is excellent (great on cask too). It is called Coconut Shy-PA - check out Brew Father etc. for recipe. Remember to use toasted coconut (or do it yourself to help dry a little of the oils [helps with head retention] and gives it a bigger flavour. Oh and food process the coconut to about the size of rice......200 grams in whirlpool and 300 grams in dry hop for me - was excellent (23 Litre batch).

So I used to brew at home a lot. Had all the cool stuff, kegs and all. I had a buddy who went pro and now works at deschutes brewery. Anyway, I recently got back into it after about 8 years not brewing. I’ve been making single gallon batches on the stove. I asked my buddy for a little bit of hops for my brew. He left 20 pounds of hops on my porch. Citra and mosaic he said. So I will be forced to attempt an ipa 😂 simply because I have way too many hops to ever use in my life. I vacuum sealed them all and put them in the freezer. If I knew anyone or how to go about it, I would give most away. Problem is that I don’t know any other brewers than the guy who gave me the hops. I don’t use social media either so I guess I’m stuck with more hops than I will ever need.

There's still good IPAs out there, but its nice if they decline just enough to still give other better beers room to breath. Lager/pilsner and IPAs seem to be out in like a binary. So many amazing ways to play with belgian styles, and then the amazing and yet incredibly elusive barleywine (itself kind of half-corrupt by IPAs). And ya'know, sometimes I actually do want a stout or dopplebock in the summer without waiting for your "winter" holiday special. Its a distinct flavor and style, not a damn season.

People who actually appreciate beer aren't going to quit drinking it. It's too good. The only people who will give it up are people who drink it because everyone else drinks it. Those folks who can't tell Bud from Guinness but feel a bizarre compulsion to be accepted. People should quit making weird garbage beer and calling it IPA. I'd love to see a detailed video about why to change from my 22 oz. bottling to your new keg system. What components do I need to purchase and why. What components are nice to have and why. What are the advantages and disadvantages of kegging vs bottling. I only brew during cooler weather when I can ferment in my basement - will keg fermenting change that? Do I need a kegerator or can the keg fermenter sit in the corner of my basement? Your keg playlist really doesn't do much to sell the product. Thanks much!
@JamesChurchill3
@JamesChurchill3 2 ай бұрын
Kegging for serving is so much easier than bottling, there's less to clean, less to store and less chance of introducing oxygen to your beer. If you're fermenting in a keg, the main benefit is being able to do pressure fermentation, but also being able to do closed transfers to your serving keg which reduces the chance for oxygen ingress to your beer. Personally I don't have much space for fermenting in so I can fit 3 kegs in where I'd only be able to have 2 bucket fermenters so that's another bonus. Fermenting kegs can sit at room temperature or you can wrap heat pads around them to ferment warmer, or there's actually the option of the Brew tools MiniUni cooling jacket if you need to bring your fermenter lower than ambient (and have a glycol chiller).

I think IPA is a great style for homebrewers to play around with flavors. Find a decent mash bill and change it up by adding a variety of hops. Unfortunately a bunch of "breweries" have been using it as a cheat code for too long to add another sku to their offerings. IPA has become a marketing gimmick to try and grab a bit more space on the shelf, and everyone is doing it. I'd be happy to see it be done and over and get more interesting Sours, Kolschs, Porters, and Stouts. C'mon breweries show us you got more skill than just hucking some new hop blend in the tank and drawing up a dippy label for it.

I totally agree! New Belgium has been a great brewery. I'd be impressed if "Fruit Force" was flavored through some type of hop wizardry, but still probably not a great beer as it does taste hot on the alcohol. I'm also getting tired of NEIPAs in general, though I do like the style. I do like how bitter beers are popular now but that can only go so far in the mainstream. Given the amount of expensive ingredients are in any IPA, the market could afford some variety with other styles. Who ever thought we'd have this many IPA options at an average convenience store...?

What is most disturbing to me about the voodoo ranger “force” series is they are like 4 bucks for that big can at 9.5%. Anyone who brews care to explain how this is possible?
@Thewretchedwilly

Most of it can be attributed to economies of scale. They get grain for so cheap and buy their hops on contract

This was the other topic I wanted to explore with this vid but cut. The "price per ABV" is about half of what Bud light charges in tall cans, which is crazy.

Kyle- why you mad bro? Sierra Nevada wrote the book with one of the greatest brews ever to be sipped (the original pale ale). Just let them experiment with the Voodoo Ranger series. Most of them are really good. Clearly, many brewers have utilized their creative license when it comes to hazy or juicy IPAs, but that's fair game in the world of brewing. As long as hops are plentiful, the IPA is here to stay.

@@ClawhammerSupply Thanks for the reply Sir! I agree- an absolutely interesting topic. So, once it's said & done and you enjoyed the coconut IPA (along with Emmett's stamp of approval), would you concede that the IPA is alive & well, at least until further notice? Also, I'm beside myself that y'all mentioned Mad Dog 20/20. Remember Boone's?

nawp, I been exploring NA IPA and other hopwater type drinks lately and honestly some of them are pretty bomb - I had an NA hazy IPA the other day and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Thing is, I just like hops. Being an Oregonian, I guess it's just an extra tastebud or something we seem to have grown, but hops make a lot of things better (one of them being water lol). 🙂

Let's be honest, Voodoo Ranger has always been gas station schlock. New Belgium had it's time in the sun 20 years ago when menus and aisles were filled with Budweiser, Miller, and MAYBE Sam Adams or Stella. In that setting, Fat Tire was superb and novel but has since been left in the dust and New Belgium hasn't been competitive on quality since.

I love new Belgium beer and most of the Voodoo Ranger line. Until I tried the Fruit Punch IPA. I thought, "my god, what have you done!" This tastes just like you brewed a double IPA and spiked it with 4 Loco. It's horrible, tastes like you added coolaid packs to the fermenter. And I honestly have to wonder, why ruin your good name with this swill? Why not make a separate entity and sell this under that. Like I get there's probably a market for this in the 4 Loco camp, but don't drag your name down that road.

I think, around here, craft beer as a whole in on a decline. Many, many places that used to have 10 coolers of craft beer have one or two now. Some as low as a single row in one cooler! And normally not good stuff, lol.

Sums it up at the end... "This is all just a shameless promotion..." Although, I concur, the "Four Loko-ization" of the IPA is stupid and for what, for whom? Ancecdotally, I've watched the women in my circle of friends start to swap reviews, on the hoof, regarding new sours that are popping up, seemingly everyday, at more of the high profile breweries around our area. The flavors have gotten pretty silly, but I've seen some interesting converts among my friends. So, if sales are the objective and of course they are, then I don't see this changing any time soon which also goes for IPA's. Most of my friends like to drink, a lot, so cost enters the picture earlier on than for those with too much money or can leave a pub having only had one pint all night. For my friends, 12 to 15 bucks on 4 cans of peanut butter and banana sour is only going to happen once or twice. The point is, the occasional novel sour is a treat and we'll go back to our more affordable blue collar IPA's. The reality is the next time we want a Peanut Butter and Banana sour, it'll be gone, it's always a one-off... What is the house sour now? Blood Orange and Bubblegum? Okay, just one...

New Belgium figured out that people don't want or simply can't afford to buy $12 6-packs. The cost of beer matters. Craft beer lost its mind when it comes to price. When I want a decent size IPA I buy NB because it's cheaper, I just stay away from their crazy IPA's.

i am just happy to have a gas station beer with any flavor at all. i think juice force is great, the mango hazy not the koolaid adjunct to be clear. i think the real problem is brewers just calling anything an ipa now. imo a true ipa is heavily hopped and high gravity with malt and hops only, and maybe some dextrose. once you add juice or flavoring or whatever it becomes an adjunct ipa. im not sure i would call your coconut beer an ipa, maybe a fruited ipa? its different than just dumping liquid flavor into a beer.
