The problem is Apple. They will not allow the iPad Pro to be the computer it cries out to be. Everything is a compromise with the iPad Pro. I should know, I own three of them. If only Apple would treat it as a real surface pro type computer, with full OS, it would be excellent. They won’t though because dollars. Therefore the iPad Pro will always be a compromise.

I feel mixed on this because over time I found the surface to be a compromised machine from a user interface perspective. It was too thin and light to run pro apps on its intel chips for long at high levels without wall power, and using it as a tablet was not nearly as smooth or enjoyable as the iPads

Apple has created an interesting problem. Many iPad users like it because it's "not as hard to use as a computer", and some iPad users want it to be able to do everything a computer can do, but with a touch interface. Microsoft "kind of sort of" solved this with the Surface, but they didn't solve the "not as hard to use as a computer" problem, and having a touch screen on a laptop isn't game changing - for a lot of things, a cursor is better. I think Apple has done a good job so far, but it's a difficult goal for a device to be simple and complicated at the same time. I rely too much on third party plugins in Logic to make the move, at least at this point. IGreat video, by the way.

This is really true! It’s a hard needle to thread, I think having stage manager be an optional mode, and then expanding on that over time, is probably the best way. Here’s why I keep coming back to the iPad Pro as a music and content creation box over my MacBook Pro. I could do like a lot of producers and carry my MacBook with me everywhere as well as a controller and probably an interface. It’s not a terrible amount of kit. But with the iPad Pro I can carry it completely on it’s own due to the fact that it has such an excellent touch experience. It is it’s own midi controller! I can play parts right into it through the touch controls which have some pretty deep expression capabilities. The mics are good enough to scratch vocals and sample other sounds without an interface. I hear a lot about how the ipad can replace a laptop, but I don’t hear many people acknowledge that it can also replace your midi controller. I understand that manipulating a glass screen isn’t for everyone, but I’ve gotten pretty comfortable with it. Definitely enough so that I can use it all by itself and have a good music making experience.

Excellent video, mate! I used an M1 12.9" iPad Pro + magic keyboard as a laptop replacement for about 2 years. Loved everything about it, except for the "lite" versions of Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel. I'm not a content creator or music producer so had no need for Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro. As a writer, I need full versions of Word and Excel to do my job. The iPad versions aren't nearly as robust as those for Mac/Windows. I finally bought an M2 Air for my mobile/secondary work device. It works every bit as well as my desktop gaming PC for my job. I still miss the iPad's touch interface and even catch myself reaching for the Air's screen to launch an app or scroll through a web site. My iPad now is just a content consumption device -- an expensive content consumption device. My dream iPad would be the rumored 14" Ultra with full version Office apps. I'd gladly sell my Air and iPad to get my hands on that beast.

I bought a new 12.9” iPad Pro when Logic for iPad came out and both got me excited about creating music on the iPad. I’ve been a Logic users since it was eMagic Logic Audio. It does have fewer features than the full desktop version but I see that as a positive because it makes think differently when working on a project/song. Since getting the iPad a few weeks ago I haven’t even touched Ableton, which became my main DAW. I’ve seen a lot of videos regarding Logic for iPad as of recently that are from glass half full minded users. I come from days of reel to reel tape, hardware synthesizers and transmitting MIDI via 5 pin DIN cables. I love the fact that I can integrate that stuff with something like Logic for iPad. It’s immensely fun taking something off tape and further manipulating it with auV3s. One goal I have for a future project is to be able to score a independent film using Logic for iPad, which can be done since Logic has the ability to do tempo and meter changes. I’m not talking John Williams 80 plus piece orchestral scores but definitely something you’d hear in a contemporary TV show. Like yourself I’m excited for future and I look forward to hearing more things that people create on this device.

I was an early adopter of the iPad. Loved it when it came out. But it took too long for it to really deliver on what Apple had promised. Microsoft really beat them to the punch with the Surface Pro, which was (is) a full fat computer that can run any Windows program, in the same thin tablet form factor. The problem with the iPad Pro is while it has the power under the hood, it's still very much limited by iOS. Which is still very much stuck in that content consumption world. The Surface kind of has the opposite problem, where's it's designed around an OS and software that wasn't built with touch control in mind, and is kind of crap as a consumption, app based tablet. But having used both extensively, the Surface is hands down better for any serious work.

The challenge with using an iPad as a primary computer lies in its failure to offer a substantial improvement over existing solutions. I base this statement on my personal experience of selling my gaming PC and relying solely on an iPad Air 4th generation for six months in 2020-2021, hoping to make a successful transition. The iPhone brought about a revolution by surpassing the capabilities of traditional T9 devices. This attracted developers to create apps for the platform, catering to the needs of those users. On the other hand, in the realm of music production, regular PCs and Macs were already fulfilling the requirements effectively. The iPad, as a platform, did not offer a groundbreaking advantage. While I appreciate the ease of input and portability it provides, these features alone do not hold enough value for the majority of users. This sentiment extends to myself as well, as I primarily use an M1 MacBook Pro. For me, the major obstacle is still the integration of MIDI with hardware. I still require a "computer" to set up and utilize my M-Audio guitar pedal board and Novation Launchpad X. Furthermore, I ended up purchasing the Novation device because my Ableton Push 1 does not work with the iPad. For those that can do their full workload on iPad, that's awesome. For me, I'm still waiting for either Ableton Live or Apple's Mainstage to give it another try.

The Microsoft Surface series has done so much more than any iPad for years. However it’s interface is a Model T to the iPad’s Lamborghini. Performance? iPad Pro blows Surface out of the water. Battery life? Ditto. So Surface I’d more office worker friendly due to high compatibility, but Apple delivers the best user experience in town. Can’t beat Apple. So I would say IPad has game as a laptop replacement, but new adopters have been willing for years to forgive a lot that should have been fixed way back with the first rollout of iPad-OS. The REAL elephants in the room are companies continuing to make keyboard cases without trackpads, and MacBooks without touch screens (and 360 degrees hinges).

I have been an on again/off again iPad user since the first iPad. This was off course before iPadOS was even a thing, and ever since then I have been a huge fan of the operating system. Before iPadOS in my opinion, iPad’s were seen as a device like an iPhone just bigger. Hearing those comments working in retail always made me a little upset, because I always thought they could be more once the iPad started pushing the idea “What is a Computer?” That is when it hit me, because a computer can be whatever a person uses on the daily to get their work done. Now that we have iPadOS I feel that Apple has finally bridged the iPad and Mac together but still being able to market both fit different users. For myself, I do all my work online and don’t need any desktop apps or even software. I love iPad’s because of the App Store, portability, peripherals, and the fact I can use it as both a tablet and laptop. I love iPads - and they have certainly become a lot better in recent years. I even get the concept of them as an accompaniment rather than a replacement for a Mac. However, while Apple has made them very powerful, the price point is very problematic to me. They are priced like a laptop now but they aren’t even close to functioning like one. You can’t use them for programming as far as i know. The functionality of things like Apple Music still assumes you have access to a Mac. Not sure you even back them up that easily if you get one with a lot of storage. Many many programmes are not available - for example gis software. Might work for graphic design, video editing etc, but it’s no longer a great value proposition for many users imo.

And this covers all so-called computing devices like tablets, laptops, notebooks, macbooks, desktop PCs, etc.

Gibson Guitar lessons app, Fender Tone, a app that allows you to change, edit and create effects and preset on my Fender GTX guitar amp.. Marshall Gateway, does the samething as the Fender tone but for Marshall Code 25 and 50 watt amps.. The Spark app, an app for the Positive Grid Spark modeling amp.. Katana Librarian and the Katana Air app, apps for the Boss Katana MKII guitar amps.. Mantis from the Laser Academy, an app used to dry fire indoor target practicing, this app utilizes the camera to stare and targets and keep score, and finally, Final Cut Pro... I have it on my mac mini but apparently I have to get another copy for the tablet.. so based on all of this, which would you go with, the 12.9 or the 11?

Yes every brand has compromise. Surface is a good laptop but not as smooth as ipad. Ipad on the other hand is not a laptop. Google? No need to ask. It would be good if apple can take away macbook air and merge it with ipad pro. I want to be able to use ms office on ipad….like a normal laptop does

Yeah it sounds like a lot of people want office to be better on iPad which makes sense and seems like a fair ask!

The M1 was already capable.. of such functionality and processing.. it’s more the lack of software and OS functionality that is holding it back. The hardware is beyond the requirements.. It’s funny how once the M3 is released.. all the Apple Tech guys will do copy cat videos of these talking how great M3 is and how it surprised them or whatever.. it’s just a repeating cycle of content that leads to zero substance or objective analysis..

Nothing you said convinces anyone this is a pc/laptop replacement. Less than 0.1% of people will do any video editing. And less than that will not do video editing ALONE. They will use full Ms office programs (add-ons, macros, etc). Highlighting and copy paste is still much better on pc/mac. File management with additional ports (ipad has 1 usb c port lol). The day the iPad gets full Ms programs and full support for web browsers where students can fully access class websites for online classes is the day the IPad can be a legitimate laptop replacement (it would be still a poor one for advanced users).

@@DylanParisMusic I don't understand. I mean for students who are taking online classes. There are still problems with safari, chrome, etc apps on ipad ( doesn't work well with the online site class.). The other day I tried to access the site to do my homework and it did not work on the iPad. Had to bust out my laptop. Also, more than half of college students take statistics where they need either stattools (an addon program for excel) or some other statistical software. Then you have accountants, programmers, etc. Imo, a very small percentage of people (especially non students) could get by with just an iPad alone and no laptop /desktop computer (web browsing, media consumption, some games, etc). Reviews and information should be based off a good percentage of buyers and not a very small outlier group.

Yeah for the most part I totally agree! I do notice the difference in Logic and when exporting videos, and video editing was the big reason I wanted so much storage, but really I’m kinda going overkill mode here and hoping more pro apps show up some day that use the power

The fact that you start the video calling the iPad a computer tells me that you don’t know what a computer should be vs what we now expect. For me, computers should be able to be programmed without using another device, this is why I don’t think of video game consoles as computers even though they have the same hardware. The restrictions that Apple forces are the only thing holding the iPad back. I know some people will say that they develop on the iPad, but you can’t create new Apps with Swift, Rust, C++, etc… That to me is what sets appliances apart from computers, being able to create new software that can run at high performance on that same device is a computer.

I disagree with your premise because most people who use computers are not programmers, but I agree it would be cool if you could do full coding on it!

iPad Pro is not a full PC like iMac or Windows OS. It's in between them!!! The reason being that there's no full fledged ms office or other applications for the iPad. You can do video editing with Final Cut Pro , now available on the iPad. It's still a costly device for the features it offers. No, storage expansion for your files like videos, audio, images etc!!! Apple selling the 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 gb, 1 TB and 2 TB variants for higher price!!! Now Apple makes more money than Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Oracle, etc.,!!! The iPhone iPad, iMac sales have gone so high, that it's raining money for Apple in everything they do!!! Apple is cheating it's customers in a big way!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭.

In the off chance you’re genuinely curious: 1. It’s a tablet, so you can just carry around a very thin and light screen with you that can be used for nearly any task you can imagine doing with a computer, along with things like drawing, music production, video editing, reading magazines and web pages, playing games, all with touch. The MacBook Air is always a laptop, so it’s always going to take more space, be heavier, and generally be stuck in a single form factor. 2. The screen on the m1 and m2 12.9 inch iPad pros makes the MacBook Air screens look like trash, especially in dark rooms and especially when watching HDR content. It’s a knockout fight, the air loses dramatically (this is not true of the 14 and 16 inch MacBook pros, but those are also heavier and more expensive. 3. Watching video, most video apps on the iPad support higher resolutions and hdr content. On the Mac many of these are websites that are hard capped to 720 or 1080p and not hdr. KZbin, Netflix, and Apple TV are exceptions here and are great on both. 4. The Apple Pencil, this goes back to point 1, but especially for artists the two devices are essentially completely different classes. If you do drawing or digital painting, the MacBook Air is absolutely worse than the iPad in this regard. Lastly, I’m genuinely curious what the point of your comment is? I made a video saying I think this thing is awesome, and you’re saying to “solve my problem” i should buy another thing. Feels like bait, but I try to answer all the comments I can as genuinely as possible. Hope life is treating you well.

@@DylanParisMusic So essentially, because you can draw on it, and because the display is better. For me that is not very compelling. I rather have a Computer, with a potent OS on it. I have both a Macbook and an iPad, and I basically never use my iPad ever. The Macbook is so much more productive in 99% of all cases. All I use my iPad for nowdays is signing PDFs, or use it as sheet music for my piano. I don't see why anything you told me couldn't be solved by just buying a good MacBook + the cheapest iPad there is. The Display is not really a compelling argument for me either. The Macbook Displays are more than good enough, they are excellent. And if you really need the same display, you could also get a 14 inch macbook.
