In western literature Isekai is known as Gate Fantasy. I think that the premier example is the 1977 Stephen Donaldson novel Lord Foul's Bane. The protagonist is hit by a police car and awakes in a fantasy world where he is super powerful. But even John Carter could be considered a Isekai in a way. By the way, Lord Foul's Bane is very dark, being considered a precursor of Dark Fantasy and a huge influence in one of the greatest dark fantasy novels, The Black Company, written in 1984 by Glenn Cook, witch has a lot of suspicious similarities to Berserk, despite Miura never quoting as an inspiration.

Isekai is also kind of popular in Chinese webnovels and manhua, but are quite different from the Japanese and Korean ones. Usually the main protagonist reincarnates in a book as a character (can be literally any character). Usually the plot of the book that the protagonists reincarnates into is a cliche Chinese webnovel about a love story, which is why Chinese isekai webnovels usually have a modern day setting. The character the protagonist reincarnates as is usually hated by everyone (but isn't always the "villainess") and has a pretty terrible fate. The protagonist then uses prior knowlege about the plot or webnovel tropes in an attempt to change her fate.

NTHT (Now and Then, Here and There) is great, the music and the world building are amazing and it's short and (not so) sweet. The overly optimist protagonist helps getting past all the grimness and keeping a sense of hope, some criticizes him as unrealistic given what happens to him (see video for a start…) but I'm pretty sure it was a conscious choice to avoid a totally despairing anime. Most anime watcher describe NTHT as quite a cathartic experience, well worth having, once… Also, about Sara, the scene is really done tastefully, that is without showing any of the experience itself, just suggesting it, contrary to some controversial recent animes, probably most young kids wouldn't understand what happened, even nowadays. Not that I'm suggesting this anime for kids, I think even the overt events are grim enough.

Fushigi Yuugi and Escaflowne were absolutely not forgotten by me. 1992 to 1996 were my HS years and each year had a banger anime. 1996's Tenku no Escaflowne was 2nd favorite of that era only to Eva for me. Magic Knight Rayearth also came from that era. I would give FY another shot even though I hated both Miaka and Yui. It features a villain called Nakago who is just Sephiroth before Sephiroth existed. Now and Then, Here and There is still one of the most disturbing yet important anime I ever seen.

I think a big reason there's so many isekai that tends to get overlooked is it's just easier to write than a lot of other genres, it's like writing fantasy with training wheels. The main character being from our world serves as a really convenient exposition source since you can have the viewer/reader learn things that should just be common sense in that world alongside them. The video game elements also tie into it as well since it makes it a lot easier to quantify your characters strengths and abilities when you can literally just have them written out, inspect being a common ability gives you an excuse for the MC just knowing what everything is, and inventories are an easy excuse for why the MC just has everything they need with them. Finally, what was most touched on in the video, is their popularity means there's a lot of well established tropes, less experienced writers can just pick and choose their favorites, add a new one or two, and instantly have a basic framework for their story that they just need to fill in the blanks. I think this is also why the tropes tend to stand out in isekai more, because there's more inexperienced writers using them as crutches.

One of my personal favourite Isekai anime is called "Dog Days" it's actually an "original" anime as in not based on any LN/Manga. It ran for 3 seasons following the MC who is an athletic teenager that gets summoned into a fantasy world with various "beastfolk" (who look basically human but with animal ears and tails) to fight in "wars" against other nations. These "wars" are actually more akin to athletic contests and no one really dies. Throughout the 3 seasons there are more serious moments but otherwise it's a light hearted and fun anime.

On the topic of Otome Isekai, We have to talk about the webnovel that pretty much created this genre "Kenkyo Kenjitsu o motte ni ikite orimasu" and it wasn't even a fantasy isekai, The protagonist was reincarnated into the world of manga in a modern setting. Despite "Otome Game Villainess" being such an overused trope in Otome Isekai. Which is a very strange thing, Since most Otome game didn't really have any villainess character at all. Villainess isn't an Otome game trope, It was a Shoujo manga trope. It was because of f Kenkyo Kenjitsu that inspired My Next Life as a Villainess which tweaked the formula from Shoujo Manga Villainess to Otome Game Villainess, HameFura went on to be very successful and thus the genre was born.

Surprised you didn't touch on the Twelve Kingdom, one of the older light novel series that started in the early 90's and adapted into an anime in the early 00's. It's a shoujo isekai type stories having similarities with Fushigi Yuugi with the Ancient China setting but far more grim and uses the dark fantasy setting of a waring state like period in chinese history. It's a great watch and read to be honest, and probably would do well now a days with how immersed we have gotten with chinese esque setting with the popularities of Chinese games and gachas.

Even though many isekai can be very similar, we're now seeing that there are some series that put their own twist to it. Here are some series I thought were interesting: Sonny Boy - a classroom or school of kids get transported to another world all while receiving superpowers. Sort of like Drifting Classroom. Highly recommended. Tsukimichi Moonlight Fantasy- features an overpowered protagonist, but it turns out that his parents actually came from the fantasy world into the real world. The Weakest Tamer Goes on a Journey to Pick up Trash - a girl...person? (we don't actually know who reincarnated) acts as a voice inside the actual main character's head and acts as guidance or a reminder of her past life. It sounds confusing, but I enjoyed this anime. I'm in Love with the Villainess - A girl is transported to an otome isekai, but she's like the title suggests, she's in love with the villainess, Claire. It is very clear that the protagonist is gay, which is very rare in isekai or anime in general. As more isekai are coming out, like the Suicide Squad Isekai, I believe there's going to be new spins on the genre.

TBH , i like some web novel more than light novel, shield hero is one example, light novel is the editorial version, so many revisions , cuts, changes and better intertwining of plots is done, it should be better,but i feel in most, the changes are made to make it longer and insert more people. The web novel, being the manuscript, has most of major plot, as the author view then, so there is a lot of less sanitization.

Fushigi Yugi used to be so popular back in the day. There's 2 things I've seen it do that very few harems and isekai have done in modern series. Spoilers below: 1. Harem love interests actually dying and staying dead. It's a war after all and the main characters are not excused from the casualities. Nuriko's death especially as a fan favorite. Their families are not excused either. The main love interest, Tamahome, comes home to his younger siblings slaughtered. 2. Fictional character having existential crisis when reversed isekai'd. The plot wasn't talked about in the video but it's about two girls being sucked into a fictional book. Well, those characters end up being brought to the real world and the main love interest, Tamahome, is confronted with the fact he's a fictional chatacter. He's having a mental breakdown while fighting in the middle of traffic as he realizes his family's death and all the suffering he went through was just something someone made up.

About Fushigi Yugi, I can get why you dropped it. I love my shojo stuff but HOLY LORD DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO PUT IN A PANTY SHOT EVERY PAGE?! Not to forget that it's just such a drag to get trough. 12:07: I got annoyed at seeing that scene until i watched the whole thing and saw that it was an accident. Was a relief they were shocked that they did it and didn't know. I might respect this show enough to watch or read the source material. (read it just to see how it was written.. Since reading Re:Zero i've been interested)
