Small coastal towns in Crete are fantastic for food and culture. It is so easy to fall into the lifestyle. As an Englishman who is used to 3 meals a day (usually all with meat), I, without noticing, mostly lived off fresh bread, yoghurt,thyme honey and fruit and veg. The quality of the bread, fruit and veg is the best I have had. I would score this Island very highly for the quality of produce coupled with the simple recipes.

In short, the term "Greek" always goes first, even before religion, in case you're Christian. There's nothing holier and more glorious than the single fact of being a Greek. There are many things that are similar and many things that are different between Greek and Italian kitchens; the one thing that I believe is exactly the same is that everyone's Yaya/Nonna/Grandma is the undisputed BOSS of the food... Have you ever seen 12 grandmas fight amongst themselves in a home kitchen? It's not going to happen. (Don't get me wrong, they get along and cook nicely together at church, but their private home kitchens and their family recipes are a different story)... It's totally possible that Grandma might not talk to Auntie for 3 weeks because they got into a battle about how to properly load the dishwasher; can you imagine the chaos of more than one "Chef-Grandma" per kitchen? Heads would roll and the family would dissolve!

My favorite cheese of all time, mizithra, originated on Crete. It is basically a special vairant of feta/goat cheee that's much softer and saltier too, as well as better tasting in my opinion. And it tastes so good when you melt it. However, if you ever get hold of it and try to melt it, and it just burns like regular feta, just melt it with a "double boiler," meaning put it in a bowl over steam, but remember to add a bit of milk to it, or it won't become a cheese sauce but probably just burn a bit like before. Melted mizithra tastes amazing when poured over meat skewers :D

You should always eat regional, seasonal, fresh and organic food - no matter where you live. Little meat, a lot of vegetables, fruit, spices and any produce of nature. Cooking yourself is key as processed food includes too many chemicals, sugar, salt and/or glutamate. Decent amount of physical work, an inner philosophy of enjoying life and not taking oneself too serious completes the picture.

I came across the theory that olive oil due to polyunsaturated 24 acid insulates the neurons and makes them transmit many times faster than neurons who get the acid not from olive oil but is produced in the liver, maybe an explanation for creative pro human civilazations vs producing ones ;-)
@paullangford81795 жыл бұрын
Another theory is that having an unnaturally high level of polyunsaturated fats and oils in the diet affects the cholesterol that insulates the nerves. This explains why Americans have been crazy since the 1970's ... Or was it the trans fats in margarine made from hydrogenated vegetable oils?

these are the people who raged havoc on the nazi’s and are known for their ability to traverse around the island like some sort of ultra running parkour mountain goat. christopher Mcdougall's book “natural born hero’s" seems to enjoy the notion that myths are a way of relaying facts; a point stressed in the book. I’m not saying the cretians don’t put up a good fight when it comes to occupiers, but i would stress familiarity of the harsh terrain and a few athletic outliers as their best defense. these people seem more fit for hibernation than a run; it seems more like the healthiest way to be fat.

Maria Kocheila gemista*. gemista means stuffed/filled, in greek (plural) . its basically vegetables stuffed with rice, the flesh of the vegies and herbs (parsley and mint) and backed in the oven. usually tomatoes, green bellpeppers and aubergines are used but u can find also stuffed zucchini,zucchini flowers,and rarely vine leaves,big onions or mushrooms but in the houses most times its tomatoes, green bell peppers and aubergines. oh, and dont even think eating gemista without a lot of good feta cheese.its a perfect marriage gemista with feta.

Also, pro tips: Add a pinch of graviera cheese or even italian parmesan for a fusion twist in the stuffing. Thank me later. And, cover the top of each of the Gemista with grounded rusk, before the oven.

Greece is stunning everywhere. You cannot make a comparison. The beauty of Greece is not Crete for being Crete, not Santorini with it's incredible caldera and picturescue views, not Rhodos with its medieval city, not Athens with it's incredible life, monuments, regions and the acropolis, not Epirus with alpine life, not Macedonia with it's incredible places like Halkidiki, Mount Olympus, Athos and so on, not Corfu/Keffalonia,Zakynthos, and all these other places, regions and islands of Greece. The beauty of Greece is ALL that combined that makes Greece a breathtaking and spectacular country. One day I will live in Greece, but most likely on the mainland at an incredible place. But with the idea to use that as my base to every now and then go explore and island, region, mountains, waterfalls, forests, history, culture, natural hotsprings, unique gems, museums, archaeology, restaurants and so on and so on. That is what Greece is. A country that has everything including a perfect climate PS. And that being said. Ofcourse Crete is incredible. It's called a small continent for a reason, as it has everything a continent has. From snow capped mountains all the way to the only natural palmforest of Europe. the island boasts 2200 plant species which is more than England, Ireland and schotland together. Crete has 9000 years of history, incredible remains of the bronze age civiliation of the Minoans, and many other historical layers. It is fertile, very diverse in every way, incredible beaches and 3 mountain chains rising 2500 meters from sealevel upwards, making this island scenic around every corner. To many incredible towns and villages. It has it all. I can easily understand why people love Crete. It's just that if you combine all that is Crete, and combine that with all that what the other islands and regions are in Greece, which each of them are unique, then all together it's a paradise
