It's a peculiarity of British and Irish humor, that they find humor in things that make them uncomfortable, or potentially humiliating, or absurd, and from hubris leading to a downfall. The audience sees themselves in the characters, recognizes their own experiences in the far-fetched experiences depicted, and knows all too well that they'd be mortified if they were in the characters' places. The laughter is partly in relief from it happening to someone else.
