I'm about the same age as Michael but I was a white farm boy from the Midwest. I always enjoyed the Jackson 5; they were on TV all the time. I liked that their lead singer was a kid about my age which was cool. But most of their songs were more adult themed which seemed weird to hear about this kid wanting his woman back, etc. Back in the day, it seemed like everybody and their dog had a "variety show" so there were lots of chances to see the Jacksons along with jugglers, dancers and Broadway style numbers. Good times but VERY different from today.

There will never ever be a superstar as talented as Michael ever again. He was the entertainment equivalent of literal lightning in a bottle; everything showed he was born to be on stage, be the best beyond everyone, and by pure happenstance, he had a family who went that avenue coming from nothing. I come back to Jackson 5 clips while being a longtime fan of your channel, so it's all the more heartwarming and delightful to see you both react so warmly to Michael. Thank you!

You want to know what joy looks like?? It’s on his face and in his moves… He was like a bird that just discovered it’s wings or something. You can tell he was in his GROOVE for one of the very first times. In the grand scheme of things, I don’t know if he could have ended up doing anything else. Gah that smile! I had such a huge crush on him as soon as I saw him on the cover of the thriller album. I had a poster on my bedroom door that I kissed every day. I was so sad when he removed that face from himself. His gift became a curse. RIP.

The Ed Sullivan Show was the biggest TV show in the country. EVERYBODY watched Ed Sullivan and he invited a lot of really great musicians (and comedians) and some of them were discovered on that show. I well remember when the Beatles debuted on Ed Sullivan, Tom Jones, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, the list goes on and on. Everybody wanted to be on the Ed Sullivan Show. It's ancient history now, but if you lived through that time like I did, you know how important that show was. The was the first time I saw the Jackson 5, on the ES Show

BJ you're absolutely right about the Ed Sullivan show, you either were already somebody or after your first appearance, if Ed asked you back on the show, you were somebody, you had made it. If you were a washed up big star from the past, he had you on the show. When Judy Garland was broke, down and out, he put her on the show out of respect, not sympathy, toward the end of her life, and she sang and came through. the Osmonds and the Jackson 5 were opposites, by default going head to head with hits. But the beautiful thing was Donny Osmond, about the same age, and Michael became friends. Ain't that the way it should be?
