Well, since you mentioned Michael Jackson. He and Freddie were friends. Queen wasn't going to release this song as a single but Freddie let Michael hear it. Michael told them they were crazy not to release the song as a single in the US. So they did and it was one of their biggest US hits. And the rest is history. True story, look it up.

Freddie did say in an interview in 1984 that he hoped that they could work on something together again but they both barely had time as Freddie was living in Munich at the time and Michael was in LA. Note Queen never went back to USA with Freddie after 1982. Freddie was busy with Live Aid and then Magic Tour in 1986 Then his collaboration with Monserrat in 1988, the miracle album in 1988-1989. Recording Innuendo and Made in Heaven in 1990, not to mention his illness at that point would make traveling difficult. Michael was then busy with Bad and Bad would tour in 1986-1989 and he decided to "retire" and by the time Dangerous was released Freddie had already died.

You should also give credit to guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernie Edwards of Chic as well. John was hanging around with these two getting inspiration for bass parts to be used with Queen songs. Nile and Bernie inspired John's bass playing on songs like Another One Bites The Dust.

Another One Bites the Dust was released in 1980. Billie Jean was released in 1982. I think Michael was very influenced by this song. Even the lyrics. Queen start with 'Steve walks warily down the street, with his brim pulled way down low.' The brim pulled low was a big part of Michael's act. Both absolute musical giants of course.

An amazing fact about Queens' lead guitarist Brian May. He was actually working on getting his Ph.D in astrophysics when Queen was formed. Music meant so much to him so he put his doctorate on the back burner. After Freddie Mercury died, Queen disbanded. Even while still part of the group Brian and his father designed and built a new kind of guitar. Brian's IQ has been measured in the 160's. That's even beyond Big Bang Theory smart. So he was a real genius on top of being a musical genius. after Queen disbanded, Brian went back to working toward his doctorate. He finally got it in 2006 or 7. He's now Dr. Brian May Ph.D. He's also written about 6 books on the subject of astrophysics. He's even worked with NASA periodically.

The moment when you realized Queen influenced MJ (or Quincy Jones) was priceless. The beautiful and astute Asia heard it from Beat It, but I heard it from Billy Jean... I think it's both. Judging from the number of times Queen songs have been sampled, or stolen in the case of Vanilla Ice (check out Queen's Under Pressure), I think it's both.

Shout out to Marci Sorrell for starting the story. John Deacon, the bass player wrote this song, and he was inspired after hearing a disco band called Chic playing a song called Good Times. Again, I'm a year late but I can't resist. I saw a Freddie interview where he said he was 37 yrs. old and he could learn so much from Michael Jackson who was 25 yrs old at the time. He said Michael Jackson liked Queen and on a number of times, more than a few, he encouraged them (Queen) to release Another One Bites The Dust as a single in the United States....it shot to #1 and Freddie smiled and said, "Michael was right". This was written by John Deacon(bassist) and he is underrated for his talent. Originally the other members didn’t want to release it because it was their take on the Disco sound. Queen is their own genre you can’t put them in a box thinking that they only have one sound. Queen were gods of Arena rock and the rock anthem.

Great reaction! Yes, of course they had the hi-hat back then! I loved this when it first came out but did not realize it was Queen at the time or who Queen was. I was in marching band and a friend of mine arranged it and wrote out parts for the band so the band could play it at our big rival football game. "(Rival school name) bites the dust".

John Deacon the bassist was hanging out with the band Chic and it was inspired by their song 'Good times'. Michael Jackson heard the song and persuaded them it has to be released as a single. Roger Taylor the drummer hated the song and the disco sounding beat. It got released in 1980 and was number one on the US Black music charts...Michael hung out with the band at that time, so you are bang on right about the influence, he adored Freddie.

Bernard Edwards (RIP) the Bassist for Chic actually showed Deacon techniques to improve his Bass playing on driving tracks like this one. You can hear that same influence in Bass and Percussions in Michaels song Billie Jean. However, Michael says the Hall and Oates song "I can't go for that", released in 1981 inspired the drum and bassline for the song.

Mind you, MJ had already released Off The Wall, but MJ only became an insane superstar when Thriller was released. MJ and Freddy, as well as the rest of Queen, were great friends. Also, two legends taken far too soon, and we music fans are the worse off for it (and I've said that particular quote too many damn times as I get older). And I gotta add, NOBODY brings up Freddy's or Rob Halford's (Judas Priest vocalist, and THE "Metal God") sexual preferences...because it don't fkn matter (I'm not touching that subject as far as MJ...feelings are still "raw" when it concerns him...still are for me, and that's a personal conflict I'll probably take to my dirt nap). I read an article that said Queens bassist John Deacon , (told by Brian May -Queens guitarist), was very influenced by Nile Rodgers and by Chic- Good Times when he developed "Another one bites the dusts' " funky bass line. It was inspired by Chic's sound. In high school my favorite bands, sounds, were, Queen, Journey, Eagles, Chic (Good times- one of my fav), Sister Sledge, Gladys Night, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Earth wind and fire (my fav song at the time "September", Boogie Wonderland) and the Ohio Players...OMG i loved "FIRE"), Stevie Wonder, Commodores, "Brick house"-one of my all time fav too, Styx....etc

"Another one bites the dust" was a term prior to this song. While it can be traced back as early as the 18th century, modern usage goes back to the 1930's B cowboy movies. BTW, AOBTD came out in 1980; "Beat It" was released in 1982 so it's possible they influenced each other. It's hard to say. We are talking about the work of giants.

Just read previous comment and Jayhawk is right. 'Another One Bites the Dust' was released(Wikipedia) in 1980, MJ released 'Beat It in 82'(Wikipedia) and Billie Jean in 83'(Wikipedia). Of course, how long these hits stayed on the shelf, before being released is unknown, but reading about this interaction explains that MAYBE Freddie had an influence on MJ.

Michael Jackson's "Beat It" was actually musically written to be a rock song and MJ producer used Eddie Van Hallen to rock it out. He changed the song. The musical sound was set by Eddie. He did it in secret so his band members wouldn't know. But the song became a huge hit. He wasn't paid or credited for any of it. but Eddie played the guitar as no one else could and it didn't take long for people to learn it was him.

Freddie's style of showmanship and singing is his own. Influenced many. He named various musicians he was influenced by (The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix) but I never heard Michael Jackson on the list though as has been said below - it was MJ that convinced them to release this as a single.

You know Freddy and MJ was real good friends and MJ is the reason this song got released, the band didnt like it for a release but MJ convinced them it was a hit....and he was right!

Do White Queen live at Hammersmith Odeon it will blow your mind. That's the Freddie strut. The bassist John Deacon wrote this and Micheal told them to release this song and it was a hit

Definitely soul and funk influence. Even Jon Deacon, their bassist who wrote the song, in part wrote it for/to crack the U.S. Black radio/disco market, even used the Niles Rodgers riff from "Good Times" (disco/skating anthem from from a few years BEFORE this, from the band CHIC, who was also back up for Grace Jones). Listen to Chic then listen to this from the 2nd verse onward. Disco, Funk, Grace Jones, and Chic were huge at that time too--folkx we're definitely listening to each other, hung out with each other....

okay a few things, one, yes they did make hi-hats back then, 2 they didn't influence and weren't influenced by Michael Jackson, it's just a very common drum beat, every single band will have a beat like that it's just quarter notes on the hi-hat, bass drum on beats 1 and 3, snare on beats 2 and 4, repeated throughout the song.
