This was the first time Michael and his brothers’ classmates got to see them in action as performers. They started the school year unknown but by the end they were worldwide stars. There is a class picture of Michael and his classmates taken the following Tuesday and you can tell that his classmates saw his performance on that show. They finally got to see who was in their class with them.

Most people keep forgetting prior to signing to Motown Records, Jackson 5 toured and worked for five years. Five-year-old Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 started performing at nightclubs, followed by an appearance at the Apollo Theatre this was the one got them notice. And, Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers brought them to Motown and Diana Ross introduce them.

I'm 76 now and was 21 in '69. I actually watched Hollywood Palace every week. It was variety show [singers, dancers, upcoming movie clips, and Broadway excerps] Later in this show, Diana Ross gave the same intro for Sammy Davis, Jr. [A member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack] and Michael came out with same type of response that Davis had done earlier.

This was the very first performance the Jackson Five did on TV. This wasn't The Diana Ross Show. It was from The Hollywood Palace which was a rock and roll version of Saturday Night Live, where each week like on Hullaballoo had a different guest. Diana Ross was about to leave The Supremes and they made it look like she discovered them but she didn't. It was Bobby Taylor of The Vancouvers who told Suzanne Depasse about them and arrangements were made for an Audition. She introduced them as Michael Jackson & the Jackson five,. Their Father Joe was very angry because he didn't want Michael to be singled out. He wanted them to be treated equal but "Michael" never needed his brothers, they needed them.

Oh guys, there IS more to this performance. Must be some copyright thing because the J5 do a James Brown song next. It's somewhere on KZbin standalone but it's always cut off of the full performance from this show for some reason. And as you can suspect, Michael kills it.
