I love the fact that she can create these lush, expansive sounds on her albums and then take those songs in a totally different direction live - these are essentially folk songs. She's such a great writer and I love hearing these songs with a different arrangement. Great music!

If this is your first time hearing the Japanese House, I am truly jealous of you. I wish I could rediscover all of her music again!

It's never too late!!! Go back to the very beginning of their discography, you won't be disappointed! All of their music got me through college (being a musician in college is unbelievably tough, so this was such an outlet for me). Happy listening! 🥰

Ordinarily, the audio mixing with Tiny Desk is immaculate and unmatched, but for the first time, it felt like the vocals were a bit low and buried in the mix. I felt myself wishing to hear Amber clearer at times. The rest of the instruments sounded amazing as usual, though! Love Japanese House and Tiny Desk ❤️
@jamesfoos19910 ай бұрын
I almost feel like that’s how she sings though, she seems to hold back a bit. Which if that’s the case, boosting it more would sound a bit unnatural.
@eleanorzissou10 ай бұрын
It‘s her lack of technique. Her intonation and breathing aren‘t perfect.
@justjacobmartin10 ай бұрын
i think this mix is a pretty good nod to how her voice is mixed on the records. all of the bgvs in this performance are as prominent as her voice which is how all the layers and vocoders sound on the records. weird for an acoustic performance maybe but i think it works.
@markpalfreeman10 ай бұрын
Came here to say the same thing. Amber's vocals don't have the presence they do on records which is sad 😕
@llRoBoBinHoll10 ай бұрын
I think it’s got to do with the fact that there are a lot of mics, with people not having their mouth close to them = a lot of bleed = less control over the mix.

Amber Bain's songs are so moving! I can't count how many times I cried to The Japanese House. This performance gives me chills. I think I heard "Leon" for the first time in 2016 and I instantly became a fan. It's been beautiful to witness her growth and evolution. I'm really thankful for everything Amber has been giving us throughout all of these years.

A very nice set. I’m totally impressed by the singer who just picked up a right-handed acoustic guitar, and flipped it around to play it left handed & up side down, with no adjustments at all. Y’all should always try to get a good shot of the guitar headstocks, for us guitar nerds who want to see what instruments they’re playing. So, it looks like two Guild acoustics, and a Fender Precision bass. Very nice. I also really liked the violin, piano, drums, and the saxophone. They really enhanced the sound. Rock On

This is great. Super happy for her to get the recognition. I do think Amber's albums have an energy that's hard to replicate in an acoustic set. They have an awesome production quality, auto-tuning, synth, etc. So if you think this is decent, go listen to the albums!!!

Seen some crazy comments about the lack of Japanese people in this video or about the band name being problematic. Like if you think that fair enough you do you but I'd just like to point out (and I'm sure I'll get some hate for this) but Arctic Monkeys aren't actually from the arctic circle. Funnily enough The 1975 were born in the 80s, The Killers aren't murders and Franz Ferdinand didn't start WW1 upon the release of their first album. The Beatles were neither insects or Beat-less and it may surprise you to learn that Lil Yatchy is in fact not a boat.

At the end of the day I'm probably more partial to their 'live' acoustic recordings they did for her most recent album, incredible recordings. Highly suggest anyone who enjoyed this video to give those a listen, basically a better recorded version of these same acoustic songs. Of course the studio album incredible too, and props to Amber for putting those acoustic versions up on streaming platforms as well
