I had a 3 year relationship with a narcissist. Not only did he fool me, he had everyone convinced that I had mental issues. Only after seeking counseling did I learn he was also a sexual narcissist who was absolutely freaked when I told him I was leaving HIM. For him, that was inconceivable because he was no longer controlling the narrative and he had to spin a whole new web to make his stories make sense to his grown daughters and our mutual coworkers. I’ve shaken off the toxicity of that experience and am so thankful I made it out. What an insidious snake! I’d rather be alone than with the wrong person. I’m sorry for all of the Sophies of the world. 😞

Love the cute little book Nic, you’re a total expert! On a serious note, our murder sentencing in the uk has become a joke. Life used to mean life but over the last few decades sentences have become increasingly lenient. It’s scary. There are so many incidents of perpetrators being released and murdering again too. It’s shocking. Hopefully reform is on its way… okay, that’s me off my soapbox now too.

Beautiful creation, excellent storytelling, and honestly an important message. I’ve been in abusive relationships and didn’t even realize how much danger I was in. Did you know that when the abuser attempts to strangle the victim the first time, that the victim is 10 times more likely to be murdered by them? I didn’t know until the Gabby Petito case was active, years after no contact with the guy who did it to me three times. Whoever needs to hear this: I know how hard it is to leave, I know you probably see so much potential in them and that the good times are so good, but please understand that bad times this bad aren’t meant to be overcome. The sooner you leave the better. And cut off contact, if someone abuses you they are not your friend any more that they are your lover. No one deserves to be treated this way and no tragic back story excuses it. Reach out for help, whether it’s to friends, family, or a helpline, and get away from them before it’s too late.

Not only are you more likely to be murdered, but brain damage begins as soon as you lose consciousness, it changes you and you are never the same. It's possible this can cause a TBI, traumatic brain injury, and it can cause miscarriage a couple of days later if you're pregnant. If you aren't breathing, the baby isn't getting oxygen either. Some women don't remember being strangled at all, they're confused. It's possible to kill someone without leaving any external marks. And decades later, you can have a stroke caused by the strangulation. Decades later!!! They've also looked into the types of people who kill cops. A large percentage of them have a history of domestic violence including strangulation, so if the cops don't want to help you or don't see any "marks" tell them the life they save may be their own. And with the massive underreporting of this crime, the numbers are probably much higher. If you research strangulation you'll find a lot of videos about choke holds in wrestling. And how it's safe and doesn't have any long term effects, but people have died as a result. It's not choking, most women call it choking too. Police are supposed to be taking it more seriously now. Choking is internal, like choke on a piece of food. Applying external pressure to someone's neck is strangulation. You can disrupt blood to and from the brain, or cut off breathing.

I just have to say you would be great for narrating mystery novels. Audible needs to hire you. Also have you ever considered writing a true crime novel? I think it would be awesome because you are a natural storyteller. I know the topic of real life murders is very very sad but it brings important topics to light. Like the disappearances of Native American girls and women. Or the case of taking advantage of and harming vulnerable adults for financial gain. And of course this case of dangerous toxic relationships. Plus cases that have kind of disappeared into the background over time and really need to be talked about in order to lead to a break in a case. Just a thought. Love your videos.

This story pretty much echoes my relationship with my ex. If not for his brother, who, after several months, just happened to decide to come over late that night, I'd not be here. My ex had a large butcher knife in his hand. At the moment he reared the knife back to plunge at me, his brother walked in, saw it and jumped him. He was insanely jealous, to the point of imagining things that weren't happening. Couple that with alcohol and it makes a deadly combination. I know I am fortunate. I don't know what made his brother decide to come by that night, but, I'm so glad he did! I enjoyed this! It was a bit triggering, but, I'm a big girl. I refuse to let his actions control my life. Thank you!

That book is adorable! I need to try in make one. :) The justice system is, unfortunately - in some ways, different in Europe. Sweden has the same pitiful jail time for murder... and murderers are let out to murder again... There're talks about change, but when I have no clue... Poor girl and her family... This is not unusual... boy meet girl, they end up together, he's not a nice person, she realises and he's manipulating and destroying her life when she wants to leave...

Gorgeous book pendant, Nik! The details on it are just so lovely! I see that you've linked Dr. Ramani. She is an excellent source regarding narcissists and her videos are almost like therapy sessions! I'm in the US (California) and work in a law firm (we do civil work, not criminal, but my education has touched on criminal law). The UK has some of the most ridiculous custody and sentencing laws and procedures. It's actually distressing how lenient they are. Their murder sentences are shockingly short, and their custody procedures for violent acts also make no sense at all. I was reading an article today about a woman in the UK who was in an abusive relationship, and she actually had multiple videotapes of her partner's abuse against her, beating her, strangling her, throwing her against a car and pummeling her into the ground. Despite her complaints and all this visual evidence, her abuser *was released from jail* to await trial and sentencing! We all know what happens in a situation like that - the likelihood of that man going back and actually maiming her or murder her just increased significantly, as if it wasn't bad already. People complain that in the US the criminal laws favor the perpetrators, but it's nothing like the UK, where that shockingly appears to be true! RIP Sophie, you deserved so much better.

I love craft time mysteries. True crime is a genre I enjoy. My daughter just finished her first year as the librarian of an elementary school. I think some book charms would be an excellent gift for the librarian on the go.

This story was hard to hear because I went thru something a tad bit similar in a past relationship. It was over a decade ago, and I was just outta high school, but that experience still left me with trust and intimacy issues. I had broken up with my bf of a few years and, being the stupid cancer-sign empathetic person that I am, I told him we could still remain friends and he could still text/call me if he really needed someone to talk to. My mistake. Long story short, I felt like we were still in a relationship 3 more years after we broke up because he would always call me. He was so pissed off when I changed my number and he would message me on facebook, threaten that he would come to my house if I didn't call him back. I ended up giving him my new number (I know. Very stupid. But I was young and scared). And when he found out I was talking to someone new, that angered him even more. He said really hurtful and damaging things to me after that, and I eventually called it quits. Told him to never contact me ever again. He sent me a long email a few days later apologizing and...that was that. I never responded to it. I'm glad he respected what I said when I told him I no longer wanted him in my life. Ladies, when or if you are able to get out of a relationship that wasn't good for you, guard your heart and stay away from that person in every way you can. Move on and heal. 🙏🏼

Usually life in prison is 25 years, here in the UK....yep your right it sucks... meaning he is illegible for parole in 16 years, he would have to go before a bored of people and psychiatrists, if he has been a model prisoner and shows he has changed he could be out in 16 years. What a gorgeous tiny book and what a terrible story. My 19 year old brother was murdered and the murderer spent 12 years in prison (in Argentina) and we still have to consider ourselves "lucky" because of that amount of time. Crime is revolving; unjustice disguised as "fair" adds pain to a never closing wound. Not a "normal" death (I not only mean "natural") nor a "normal" grief either. Poor Sophie and her loved ones, a pray for them❤️🙏

I also personally feel that capital punishment should be the sentence for such crimes! Not releasing them to repeat their crimes again. Gorgeous little book. Unfortunately, the murder of women is a worldwide problem. In Australia, on average, one woman is murdered each week most often by men just like this one you've been describing. Some of them are truly disgusting in their cruelty towards the women they usually profess to love. A couple of years ago a man set fire to his wife and 3 children in their car. It happened in the street and bystanders tried in vain to get the family out of the car but the man prevented them from doing so. Heartbreaking stuff. Sometimes I think we need to ask for a psychiatric evaluation of a potential 'suitor' before we have anything to do with them.

Hello Nik, the little pendant book is super cute, loved watching you make it, I NEED to have one!!!!!! On to the other subject, for me the sentencing for murder - life in prison - should mean just that. That is is all about, after 16 years you are able to be paroled, pardoned, forgiven even for a heinous crime. Sophie does not get to have just 16 years being dead, there is no parole for her, her time IS for life. If only there were more woman making the laws and female judges acting on such cases, maybe then, we would get REAL justice. I just get so angry when I hear stories like this, and there are just TOO many happening EVERYDAY. When will we see TRUE justice in the works???? Brian, mentioned his mother losing a daughter in Gabby, but didn't mention his father or sister at all. Like he wanted sympathy for his mother, poor her. And the part about killing himself he says in past tense, like I killed myself, he can't write that if he's dead. Note is designed to give some closure to people who believe it. But I'm wondering if Roberta wrote it. Need handwriting samples. There's another note the lawyer mentioned, the envelope said to burn after reading, it was from Roberta to Brian. If you're writing a suicide note, wouldn't you say I'm GOING to do this thing in this way because...?

On a sad note, if you think minimum 16yrs is too lax(which it is and he'll probably get out way sooner than that!), you should check out Ireland's sentencing history where murderers literally get away with murder(i'm literally being literal!) or worst case scenario gets a metaphorical slap on the wrist. Europe went from burning women at stake in public squares for "witchcraft" to basically babysitting monsters in 5 star settings for as little as possible then unleashing them back to the public.

Love the little book, and you make it look so simple. UK law is so skewed in favour of property that you will get longer in jail for embezzlement than murder. It is disgraceful and needs to change, but I can't see that happening anytime soon with the current idiots in charge. What is even worse is that the guy may have been sentenced to 16 years but will be eligible for release after he has served only HALF the time if he has been a 'good boy in prison'. 8 years for premeditated murder is insane. As a survivor of domestic abuse, I have to say that the worst thing about the UK is the family courts. You are not supposed to discuss what goes on in there on pain of being locked up, so I am choosing what I say very carefully. Regardless of what decisions are made it doesn't stop you from having to be in the same room as your abuser, having to deal with all their made up BS while at the same time having to deal with your very real fear of them. It turns you into an anxious, nervous wreck and this makes you look bad in front of a judge. When you have children from the relationship, they are used as a tool to get at you. The abuser uses the system to further bully you and your children to get their own sick enjoyment and feel that they have retained power over you. In the 5 years it took my divorce to go through...and that was constantly in and out of court, dealing with child experts, seeing psychologists, medical experts, school meetings, discussions about this that and the feckin other...I never once came in contact with a female judge. Every judge in the local family court was male. Ladies of the UK studying Law, please do not think that becoming expert in family law is being put in a sexist pigeonhole. We will not get female judges who are expert in family law unless female lawyers specialise in it. Their has to be a pool of relevantly qualified barristers to choose from to promote to Judge. Until the balance is redressed in the family courts, women and children in the UK will continue to suffer. Wow...I think I needed to get that out...

Here in Canada, we only have 24 years if you get life in jail. I do get frustrated in not serving enough time in jail. I was living in Yellowknife during the time when nine miners were killed by more than one man, but one guy got charged with it and served 24 years. It just shows that people's lives are only worth 24 years divided in 9 souls. I was a kid during all of this, but I still understood this wasn't right. Thanks for this video. It was very interesting . So very sorry this young lady is no longer alive. 😢

The last executions in the UK was, I believe, in 1964 when I was 13….. yesterday I am old…. They claim the murder rate in the UK is lower now than it was when the death penalty was in place but it doesn’t seem like that. We had a very high profile case some years ago called the ‘Great Train Robbery’ where a bank stopped a mail train and stole, for the time, a high amount of money. Sadly, one of the workers on the train was beaten and eventually died from his injuries, technically manslaughter but the sentence handed out was 30 years. Now it is not uncommon for murderers to be released, some to kill again, within 10 to 15 years. The world has gone mad….. However. Five days ago I had no interest in making books. I do buy sketch books for my feeble drawings and watercolours but make on? No way. Then I watched a random video of yours and I am now awaiting delivery of a set of bookbinding tools and plan to try and make my own sketch books. I never intended to do this and I don’t know what the outcome will be but I blame you totally for my new hobby…….😂😂😂😂😂😂

I’d heard this case before, and like most cases in the UK, it’s upsetting to hear about the sentences given for, what to Americans, heinous crimes. But I have to think it’s not our culture, also we’ve had cases, too, where the perpetrator was released early and went on to commit another crime. I just wish they would at least be in for as long as the years they took away.

Yes, he will be eligible for parole after 16 years. And that's actually a decent sentence these days. People in the US are getting MUCH LESS. A mom who killed HER CHILDREN got five years and served TWO. And that just one in recent years of people getting nothing for horrible crimes.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter where you go in the world there are always people like Martin Cavanagh. Whilst I can see and even agree with to an extent the philosophy of prison being to rehabilitate not punish for minor offences I do strongly believe that the UK does need to have a 'whole life' sentence made mandatory for an obviously pre-meditated murder like this. In such cases the chance of somebody truly changing/reforming is in my opinion about the same as winning the lottery without a ticket and therefor their 'human rights' don't come into it. On a brighter note, the book/pendant looks lovely.

Actually it's worse than that Nik - life with a minimum of 16 years means he's up for parole after 8 years if he behaves himself...
