I think the funniest thing about this line is that it applies a lot to rick. For a long time he used Beth's pity to manipulate her so he could do whatever he wanted. It was only in the later seasons that beth and everyone else started standing up to rick and realized how even if he doesn't show it he's just as if not more pathetic than Jerry.

No, the point that Cronemberg Jerry shows is that Jerry is capable to be a Big Shot but because all his life cared about what others think of him and how every moral he has is time a time again destroy by cynicism he needs to be proud of him and focus on the things he likes. Dumb Rick said to him that he should appreciate the coins not because of the value others give them, but because Jerry liked them and held value to him. When Jerry was working with Bees although his family finded that Dumb he was seen as sexy because he did something he liked it and did it great. Jerry can be a great person If only he just moves on from the people that puts him down because they think they are "Smart" and Jerry "dumb".

I think Rick is actually jealous of Jerry. Rick originally wanted to quit this science thing to be happy and live a family life, even declining Rick C-137's offer of interdementional travel. But then his family was killed by C-137 to force him to go the science route. Rick wishes he could be as happy as Jerry is, but he's forced to be smart and unhappy because of that Rick. Essentially, Rick's goal is to kill C-137 and become more like Jerry, finally being happy enough in his life to stop pursuing science.

I think at this point Rick would do science regardless, but I understand what you mean otherwise. I think he is jealous of jerry, but I also think that it's mixed with pity and condescension. It's telling that now that Jerry is starting to self-actualize somewhat, accepting his nature as a predator / prey animal, they are getting along a lot better and shown to have more in common. When I say predator or prey animal I mean like a cat. They are wired to do either fight or flight at any given time, because they can either be the king of any situation or a target. which is why they can never make up their minds. This video is pretty wrong. Meseeks are a stretch, especially since meseeks could have taught him the basics instead of throwing him into the deep end but I can kind of get what youre saying. The dog one was a bit off, I mean, RICK is the one who gave it the ability to learn a superiority complex, I mean seriously, pay 500 dollars to train your pet or have a freeloader genius do a favor for you to make your dog smart, who wouldn't want that. The simulation episode is kind of just him being dumb, I mean even Morty needed rick to tell him, if I woke up and everyone acted weird my first thought wouldn't be simulation, but yes, that was him being dumb. I can see the rest so far as I've only watched half the video. Cmon, Tammy being used as a ventriloquist dummy was a smart idea, also I doubt he knew anything about her, after all, she was also pretty sexual and bird person married her, so cmon, that was a bit harsh. Pluto wasn't that serious, but then again Jerry was so annoying. I typically agree with you, but some of this was just not it, Jerry got off his high horse for Morty, so that says SOMETHING. Glad you didn't berate him for the vat of acid episode, if we were to berate anyone in that episode, it would be rick, he was so petty he ruined a couple morties, made morty agree with his stupid plan, and was an asshole overall. You can't berate Jerry for the wooden Jerry, that's dumb. The rest of the stuff I get, but that's a lot of wrong stuff for a video with only so much stuff.

Jerry Smith is a reflection of the contradiction in today's society. He is called off when he is trying to behave like the ideal man from his generation and attacked because he doesn't understands how to behave and act in today's world. But at the same time he is called a conformist, weak and a loser when he is portrayed as the everyday Joe. It's obvious why he is so insecure, nothing that he does is respected by his family, transforming him into someone selfish because he is all he has. That's why when a Jerry is in a apocalypsis he is now "cool" and "badass", because the world now returned to simplier times when the only rule is survival and that's it, so Jerry can let himself be free for once in his life. It should have been obvious that was what would happen, and Rick warned him as well. Anyone knows making animals more intelligent could potentially mean they compete with us. It's pretty common knowledge to non-idiots. Of course Rick only made the dog slightly smarter. It was only by increasing the power of the device that Snowball was smart enough to further improve it, continuing that iteration until he was superior to most humans.

There's a point about Jerry that's being missed; he's not getting better despite being in a situation where he could easily improve. He commonly doesn't get better BECAUSE he's in a situation where he CAN'T easily improve. Here we have the smartest man in the universe, a man who is shown time and time again to be manipulative and petty, CONSTANTLY berating him and putting him down. Rick tears away at Jerry's confidence every moment he can. Even the unemployment issue is something plenty of people have. It's easy to look at them and say they are simply lazy, but there are only so many rejections you can get before you start to assume that a job application will be rejected; and when people expect failure in what they try? They stop trying. Sure, he's not perfect even accounting for this, he isn't supposed to be. But his confidence has been completely stripped away from him by Rick and most of his worst actions are just him not understanding the danger of the situation. Look at Cronenberg World Jerry, Look at Movie Star Jerry, look at Doofus Jerry. All of these Jerrys have two things in common: They don't have Rick in their lives and they are much more confident and capable people. You've said a few times that Rick could help Jerry get his footing back in life but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Jerry is actually a pretty well-written example of how emotionally manipulative people can tear a person apart while convincing said person and everyone around them that it is the fault of the person being torn down. Jerry was more confident at the start. He was more willing to use his authority and more well-reasoned in the plot; even having a situation where he was considering rubbing him being right in Beth's face before immediately realizing that his son is in danger and now is not the time to gloat. He lost this over time and only ended up growing after the divorce with his wife; when he had time without Rick in his life again. The speech where Rick called Jerry a predator was a great speech. Not because Rick was in the right; but because Rick showed how powerful good manipulation can be. Rick is the last person to call anyone a predator. Rick is the last person to accuse anyone else of using other people. But Rick is really good at putting himself into a position of utmost authority on a subject and talking with such conviction that the people he is talking to fully believe him. Remember; this is the man that was able to convince Summer and Morty that he could not care any less about them with such upmost certainty that every version of them was absolutely sure that Rick did not care in the slightest about them. This is despite the fact that we know that was a lie from him. Rick was not only to manipulate Jerry in this situation, he manipulated the AUDIENCE WATCHING IT. Sure Jerry isn't perfect, but with how many people act like he's literally the worst thing ever is impressive. Honestly, it's impressive. Jerry and his reception are a great study on the effects of manipulation and how the manipulated can truly believe that they are at the fault of everything in their lives and end up making it true because they don't have the confidence to rely on themselves anymore.

Jerry is a very very flaw man but he does actually care about his family well atleast was written that way before everyone in the family and writers wanted to be a Rick and treat Jerry as Meg especially in season 3 for reals they really hammered in how Jerry sucks and was later made fun of as it shows how toxic the family was and how all of them gang up on him it took Jerry becoming a Rick, someone who just doest care anymore to make morty HIS UNIVERSE MORTY, respect him and say he's cool Jerry is hated for superficial reasons or because he doesn't strock Rick ego like the rest of the family

Here's my opinion of Jerry, when he's written well, he's just the normal guy in a weird world, but that's not often the case. I like the writing when it's normal guy in weird world (like helping Beth through her existential crisis, Doofus Rick, and when he spoke to that App alien on dating) because it's a perfect foil for Rick. My issue is that the writers make Jerry the loser and universe's punching bag (it's not funny). I also hated Rick's speech to Jerry about him being a predator that thrives on pity when it's never applied to Jerry, he didn't get a job, Beth went back to him for answers, and Rick has no room to call anyone a parasite, considering his relationship with his daughter and the greater multiverse, leaving it as soon as it becomes doomed. The writers can't decide on making Rick this unstoppable Juggernaut of genius, or a miserable old man with infinite power that can't find happiness and screws himself over. They can't decide if Jerry is a normal man in a surreal world, or a selfish pathetic loser. Make Summer the punching bag for a while; I still think she's a massive bitch for that unneeded speech she gave about camping when he was completely right that Summer and Morty would not last a second in the real world.

It's a camping trip, it might not be fun, but that's no excuse to be a horrid person, especially when Jerry makes a valid point about how they wouldn't last a day without their tech or rick's tech. Morty gets bothered by Jerry too, but he was civil about how much he hates it, even acknowledges that Jerry was right. I do wish there was an episode that shows the family may not like Jerry or his averageness, but they need him. So often the show makes fun of Jerry, and it's tiresome. If the family don't need him, then get rid of him and keep Beth and Jerry divorced.

I think this is the main crux on why Jerry is either liked or disliked. The writers can't make up their minds and that is a reason why so many have tuned out of Rick and Morty. By Season 3 they saw the fallacies of the writers and their inability to back up all their pseudo-intellectual bullshit; or Dan Harmon's infinite nihilism is rather unhealthy and doesn't make for long term series that don't have an episodical reset button. Once they started putting more effort into Rick and Morty, and became 'story heavy' their falls became bare. Am I upset they tried to put some meat to Rick and Morty? No, they just have gone about it in ways that are more flash and projecting intelligence, but are flat when put under a microscope. I think also making the characters too unlikable was just too much for some, like I said the nihilism after a fashion can be your undoing even if it's a core feature. After awhile, people cannot take it anymore without a good breather, or something to make the nilhism bareable. The writers keep f*cking that up and ruin everything at least in MY opinion. I don't harsh anyone who still enjoys Rick and Morty. Part of me WANTS to watch it again as clips and tidbits look juicy but I find myself everytime finding the same flaws that turn me off.

Doofus Rick doesn’t actually eat poop; the other Rick’s mock and start rumours about that particular Rick because regardless of being just as intelligent, he shows empathy, and Ricks see that as weakness. Aside from that, you made a very good case in your argument, even if I don’t completely agree with the overall takeaway. For me, Jerry represents someone who is just a regular human, and is mostly a stand-in for the audience, but a regular human who the writers can make act terrible and pathetic to further the plot and use for the punchline.

The main thing is just that I don't think the writers really know what to do with him right now, mainly because his role as Rick's antagonist was pretty much resolved through the divorce arc in season 3. But, again, I think we've all been that pathetic jerk he is at certain points in our lives. Jerry is still an everyman, but Rick and Morty is just more willing to address the faults of everyday people.

I agree with most of your points except the last one. Mr. Frundles destroying the planet is Rick's fault. Jerry knew nothing about Mr. Frundles and what it can do, but Rick knew everything about it, and he did nothing with it. Eh... I definitely don't agree with this video at all, usually I do but this wasn't it for me. Literally everything you mentioned was done in some kind of comedic way or if Jerry WAS in the wrong he was openly punished for what he did. The only points I can agree on are Kiara and the purge episode since they weren't really funny and they also didn't have Jerry getting punished. Jerry is a pathetic character and a bad father but at least the show KNOWS that and openly admits it. But with Beth it almost seems like they're blind to it despite how they're JUST as open about how much of an awful mother she is. Jerry is my fave character in Rick and Morty just because out of the entire family he's the only one that doesn't have me rolling my eyes at least once an episode, especially with Summer. Rick and Morty are generally funny and Beth has never been all that good (space Beth not included). Jerry is pitiful which means he doesn't have to say some stupid Marvel one liner or sarcastically over thought out comment. He can just be dumb, pathetic and silly and he doesn't need much more, his character development still existing. The part in Season 6 Episode 1 where he just took the shit from his other family without responding was such a cool way to show how mature he's gotten over the series.

@KittyMonk When you do the Beth video, take into account the fact that it is actually harder to become a veterinarian (not a vet tech) than it is a human doctor for a few reasons. 1. There are fewer veterinary schools than there are medical schools in the US and in general. 2. The GPA required to get into veterinary schools is far higher than what it is for medical school. 3. You have to learn about far more different body types and species as a vet than for a doctor. Beth at the very least also had to learn about how to operate on and treat cats and dogs (due to being the 2 most popular type of pet), cows, pigs, sheep, goats and likely llamas (all normal livestock animals along with horses). There’s also donkeys, ponys (considered a separate type of horse) and mules (all types of equines Beth likely had to treat as well. And she did this as a teen mom. Goes to show how truly intelligent she is.

I hope you see this because, from what I see, you seem to only really heart comments that agree with you. This isn't a jab, but it feels a bit closed-minded if you don't acknowledge these very fair assessments. I think a lot of these problems with Jerry are a bit unfounded. Sure, he may be a cowardly, pitiful, very flawed individual, but you say this as if he's not a sane person. In fact, he is a sane person. Reasonably, he should be terrified of this high-impact sci-fi bullshit. ANYONE in their right mind would be. When Rick, the essential god of the world you're living in who regularly travels through realities, commits almost every crime in the book, and puts his family in danger REGULARLY, you'd be feeling some type of way, too. I don't think this video paints the full picture. It feels very surface-y and ignores the deeper nuances of the show. Jerry is an Average Joe in a world that's far bigger and more complex than he can ever comprehend. His wife spoils Rick by just letting him do what he wants. How many times has Rick singlehandedly almost killed his entire family? In fact, the original Jerry DID lose his entire family because of something Rick AND his own SON did. Sure, Jerry deserves some of what he gets, but also a lot of what he gets is just protection and very unnecessary. He isn't a good person, but the show doesn't pretend he is and wears the character flaws on its sleeve. However, this doesn't make him a bad character. In fact, a lot of his questions and concerns are much more founded. He tries his best and has on-going change, unlike some of the other cast that is just static. Like Summer, who is always this bitchy teenager archetype that more rightfully deserves to be the punching bad or Beth, who is willing to risk the lives of her family just so Rick doesn't leave her again (Which is a very bad trade, by the way. Beth shows absolutely zero maturity in that regard). Honestly, I think you're feeding into the whole "Jerry is a punching bag" thing while also not looking at the other characters or the deeper messages or context of the show.

Jerry is a great character and I hate him. he annoys me so bad. I think because he is the most realistic character. He’s unaware, he’s selfish, he’s insecure, but also, he never really had a chance. He is like a lot of men, who fail to live up to standards of masculinity, but also passively exist in that system. The system brakes down his will, and he allows himself to be a punching bag. He comes across as pathetic, self-victimizing and totally incapable, because his innate skills (emotional intelligence) are undervalued especially in men, meaning he is seen as worthless. Instead of rejecting that system, he resents his exclusion but doesn’t try to make his life better or make any improvement to the world at all.

Bruh Jerry's only flaw is just being very dumb. He always tries to do what's best for his family, and usually has a decent, down-to-earth perspective about things. Often he does things that end up badly, but that's because he is a dimwit, not because he's not a good person. He does have a very fragile ego though, and he takes every chance he gets to feel good about himself. This is because of one thing: EMOTIONAL ABUSE. His entire family (especially Rick) mocks, condecends and ridicules him 24/7, putting him down any chance they get. And then you wonder why he's insecure and lacks confidence? I guess people just take the other family members (most of all Rick) totally at face value when they call Jerry pathetic and worthless. The worst example of this is the Whirly Dirly Conspiracy episode's speech. It's total bullshit and is never shown to be accurate in the slightest. It's just Rick making Jerry feel bad because Rick is an *abusive person*. And people fucking eat it up. So yeah, he's a sad little man, because of *EMOTIONAL. ABUSE*. He'd be a lot more confident and successful if his loved ones let him believe in himself even a little bit.
