One of the things about Summer in the Rick and Morty dynamic is that she's like a toxic combination of the worst traits of Beth and Rick. She is as witty and capable as Rick with her brains and cunning. However, just like Rick, she doesn't know when to stop and tries to do everything to get in the best position at the end of every adventure. Like when she started that mob family around that Voltron rip-off, Summer enabled and made Rick's crazy fun train until she became redundant and was kicked out. She was the one that made everything work and was able to remove all the problems to her rise to power until Rick saw her as an impediment to his fun. This shows how she is smart but her devotion or obsession on whatever comes around is what does her in the end. Which connects with how Summer views relationships because of her mother. Rick's abandonment of Beth taught her that giving meaning to emotions is not rewarded and that's how she raised Summer, and often making Summer the source of her bad life. Both women cling onto relationships because they want what Rick deprived them of, a healthy emotional support that helps them establish a proper relationship. In the episode about pairing apps, Summer jumps from relationship to relationship but doesn't get fully invested in them. She sees them as a form of support that she never got and that's why she jumps from one to another without a second thought. Summer may be on the path of becoming the Summerest Summer or another version of Rick, but that would mean that she will end up being a wreck if she doesn't learn how to balance or control the toxic parts of her self.

Sorry, Beth sucks for a lot of reasons, but earnestly trying to tell her daughter that her looks are not the important part about her and she shouldn't worry about that so much is absolutely NOT one of the reasons why. That said, I concede that she should have still validated Summer's needs of feeling like she is beautiful in that moment while trying to do so.

You shouldn’t let anyone, even yourself, tell you that you aren’t.” Is super easy. She could’ve ended the meltdown that easy. But then the whole episode probably wouldn’t have even happened so oh well lol

Rick and Beth aren't going to give Jerry the money for the fake friend, because they both think he should get a job. Plus he knows they will mock and resent him for wanting the fake friend rather than supporting him. As for Beth, in the Gazorpazorp episode, when Beth advocates neglecting the baby and leaving him to "cry itself out," Jerry says this was how they raised Summer. Revealing that Summer was raised with neglect as Beth preferred, while Morty was coddled as Jerry thought best. This explains their different personalities somewhat, as well as their relationship to their parents and each other.

I see summer as a combination of Rick and Beth’s most toxic and badass elements this makes her a force to be reckoned with in most scenarios but also makes a lose cannon with a lot of immaturity and lack of foresight (despite her capacity to build an entire mob family😂) Mostly she lacks the experience, morality and maturity we’ve seen from Morty, probably because he’s gone on more adventures or it might be Jerry’s influence on him curbing more Rick like tendencies.

@@mikemorro140 I think Summer hit a couple breaking points - but she just became more jaded and bitter rather than broken. Like the whole "Keep Summer Safe" scenario and the Unity "Race War" for example. Also when she learned she was an accident and she was ready to run away over it. I'm surprised her getting turned inside out and gigantic didn't leave more mental scars than it did. Season 3 was one drawn out breakdown for Summer, but by Season 4 she's fine, if more jaded and bitter. I think if Summer had more focus in Season 2 these experiences would have been more damaging to her psyche. But what I really want for Summer is her to realise she doesn't need Rick's validation, it was hinted in the Season 4 finale that she wasn't going to suck up to him anymore, but Season 5 retconned that.

@@PlanetZoidstar By breaking point I mean a moment that straight up makes the character question their whole existence and realize what a screwed up person Rick could be. Like back in season one when Rick and Morty first hop universes and have to bury their own alternate selves or Beth finding out about Space Beth. Summer's gone through some shit but usually it's just regular awful stuff the other members have gone through as well but at least it could be from something that Rick isn't actively at fault for, Even keep Summer safe had more to do with how psychotic the car is.

@@mikemorro140 I think the best time for that moment would have been 'Interdimensional Cable' where the concept of infinite realities was truly opened to Summer (unless her Rick had done that already) - and she realised she does not exist in most of them. Learning she was an accident, and the brother and grandfather she'd grown up knowing for much of her life, were actually dead. I'm surprised all that happening in a single day didn't break Summer.

I don't think he'll turn into Rick since a point in the show is that Morty is Morty because he isn't Rick. He can take the risks, but he does so in order to protect the family, vs selfish goals.

Yeah summer was definitely turning into Rick during season 5. She may not have had as many adventures with Rick, but I think that summer will eventually become exactly like Rick. She’ll put others in harms way to get the job done or use someone else to do the dirty work for her. Morty said “Rick seems cool now but you’ll get tired eventually” during the Gotron lions episode (which is my favorite cause of the voltron parody!)

This reminds me of a question I asked in my Comparative Politics class. If a feminist country formed a government system that would dehumanize men. As funny as it is to me that people are scratching their heads on how a men can get sexually harassed by a woman, but it probably be sense of teasing, roleplay, or catcalling. What I'm really getting at is even though nations where women wear the pants, it's completely hypothetical if democracy of a higher female population would dehumanize men by treating them as a househusband and play along with all the usual wife stereotype's, or force men to be as the internet describes as "femboys," and not in a metrosexual or LGBT way

I mean makes sense she would want to be more like Rick, every time she acts against him the family is rude to her and when she goes along with things he makes sure she feels spoiled , it’s addictive and self propelling , it’s easier to go along with rick than against him , she went from a normal teenager to a murderer who sees no problem with killing people , since rick can clone people , alter memories, go to worlds where she didn’t kill them, or go to a universe just to kill people , summer is encouraged to be insecure and reliant on rick despite alot of his tech usually end up hurting her , like making her a giant monster , turning the apocalypse into a suburb , building a go gotron, making a machine that reads evil , universe goggles, memory gun job , ect.

Here's the thing. I think the entire family is taking on traits of one another. It's not Morty is becoming rick or summer is becoming rick it's the entire family is reaching a sort of equillibrium in personality and risk taking behavior. Jerry is learning to be confident in himself, Morty is learning to think quicker on his feet and take risks, Summer is learning how to be an action hero , Space Beth IS Beths take on what Rick does, and Rick himself is becoming more welcoming to the concept of family and patience like Mom Beth. They are all adapting the positive aspects of each other, and because of that are becoming the tightest knit family out of the entirety of what was the central finite curve, and possibly even beyond it. That is the aspect of OUR Rick and Morty's timeline family is that they are the "tight knit family" universe basically ,and all it took was a certain set of them from various universes to be brought together.

Only saw the beginning, but noticed the time of upload. We KNOW that both Summer and Morty aren't Ricks grandchildren, Summer is THIS universe's Summer, Morty is Rick Prime (Rick who killed C-137's Beth and Diane), and Rick is C-137, the one that NEVER had grandchildren of his own as his Beth died as a child. They all are from different universes, but they all have grown into their own shoes and came to TRULY love each other. Carry on,

I'm glad for your insight into Summer's character, because she's more consistent in her writing than most give credit for. My only gripe is the hypocrisy of fans thinking Ethan deserved to get mutated for breaking up with Summer. Problem is we only get Summer's side of what happened...And it's hypocritcal for her to be angry at him after cheating on Ethan with Hemorrage. Which is much worse than breaking up for personal reasons, but nobody brings that up. You're the first KZbinr I've seen reference it.

I think the problem with the first summer Rick episode is that it's being way too simplistic in a way which dumbed down Rick for the episode. The writers probably saw as making him "smart but with a blindspot because of bigotry" but came off as "annoying redditor who thinks calling women femoids is more scientific"

I feel like Rick and Archer (from "Archer") are similar characters in the sense that they allow those around them to have a common trait and be their worst selves rather than trying to put a bandaid over it and pretend to be good. You see people around him act like their "truest" selves which isn't pretty, but can be good. Yes, both characters in the shows can be terrible, but they do have good traits about them that shine when interacting WITH others. Archer and Lana, Rick and Birdperson, who rely on other people to interact in the first place. I think both of them MUST rely on others to function otherwise they will be shells of people.

I wonder what happened in the universes where Morty ends up having a gazorpian daughter instead. Maybe we never see them because, given ricks hyper intelligence potentially getting passed down through morty combined with the gazorpazorpian female hyper intelligence, they might have ended up smarter than Rick and would thus have been excluded from the central finite curve. It would be cool if they explore this now that they are in the wider multiverse.

Hey Kitty. If you want to read about an interesting take on a society lead by women, I recommend the Dark Elf saga by R.A.Salvatore. The parts that focus on the Dark Elves show a very harsh society. Drizzt Do' Urden, the protagonist, leaves his home early on, so not all of the books look at the way their people live. There's a lot of books, so I reccommend only reading them in your spare time. I'm pretty sure books 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 give the reader more of the Dark Elves.
