Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
"There must be some kind of way out of here"
Said the joker to the thief
"There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Businessmen they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody offered his word"
Hey!
[Verse 2]
"No reason to get excited"
The thief, he kindly spoke
"There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But, uh, but you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us stop talkin' falsely now
The hour's getting late
Hey!
[Guitar Solo]
Hey!
[Verse 3]
All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants too
Well, uh, outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl
Hey!
[Outro]
All along the watchtower
All along the watchtower

I will be 73 in May. As a young guy, I used to sit and listen to Cream and Hendrix with my mates most evenings. The songs are embedded in my brain. Eric Clapton and Jimi had great respect for each other as I have for both. The music lives on.

That type of thing is always a double edged sword though. Yes, on balance I agree it's preferable to live in an age where these sort of things that you love can be enjoyed instantly wherever you are. However, there's something about having to wait for things that enhances your appreciation of them. There's no perfection in life.

Not many people know it, but Jimi Hendrix was perfectionist when it comes to this song. Studio people tried to rush him (because time and tape were both expensive) but story has it that he had over 50 takes on this song with just the guitar parts to make it absolutely perfect, the way he wanted it to be in his mind. Safe to say, you can hear it. Absolute perfection in every possible way.

Indeed, this album is a staple in terms of production, easily one of the 10 greatest rock albums of the 60s, along with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Ummagumma, or Tommy. Jimi infuriated some staff members because they didn’t understand his ideas, so he had to go to the control room to make the adjustments and to mix the sounds by himself. Noel Redding got fed up and quit shortly after. But this album is one of the greatest landmarks in psychedelic experimental music, and a clear precursor for progressive rock and heavy metal. “1983 A Merman I Should Turn To Be” is Jimi’s opus magnum.

There are many more... Duane Allman, Paul Kossov, lots of rhythm guitarists (virtuosity is not a synonym of being the best in guitar playing). See Keith Richards or those who use finger picking styles like Ry Cooder or Jorma Kaukonen. I watched a video where Hendrix played an acoustic and he wasn't really good. He played an entire blues. He even had to restart at a certain point. K. Richards has a unique touch on acoustic but he will never be better than, for example, Ry Cooder or David Lindley...

Bob Dylan loved this version of the song so much that he played the Jimi version since his death. Lots of people have written songs for others and you don't realize how often that actually happens. Jimi just so happened to be the man that was meant to record this song. It takes a really humble person to recognize things like this with their own song.

Each decade, each generation will have that idea depending on its time and space. Human beings live trapped in nostalgia, in overvaluing artists and popular characters. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day." Butterfield's and Zappa's last performances, '64 World Fair, WTC bombing (was there), last ever World Surfing Championships '68, the Mothers, Dead, Hendrix, The Band, Santana, Blind Faith, Supremes, Temptations, Three Stooges live, and lots others, all in the original forms... BUT... I was born too late for the Beats, Pranksters, Crickets, etc... SO, we all missed something but still catch our chunk of history. someday you'll talk about smartfones and the interwebz with nostalgia. I'll laugh about Tricky Dick, Agnew, and Jimmy Hoffa now, remember meeting Johnny Carson, and when Ike was elected... when there was no herpes, AIDS, or bras... when I'm long dead, you can laugh about having been here when Trump ran, Taylor Swift was "Country," and same-sex marriage and weed were nationally legalized! Music was better when you can't read or write it because it forces you to just let go and play from your ears and heart. So yeah, jimi was an amazing musician who played using his own feeling :)

@@morganclare4704 my mother is an old fashioned woman. She likes listening to tagore and reading Shakespeare and Tolstoy and other Bengali authors. Earlier she used to despise rock. I made her listen to this song. Eventho I had heard it countless number of times I still listened to it the same way my mother did, with awe and amazement. And at the end of it she didn't say anything. She just gave me a beaming smile and told me, "I've never heard anything like this". The day Mozart can make her do something like that, I'll believe you.

A college roommate of mine had all of Hendrix’s records and I discovered album tracks I hadn’t heard before. Hendrix’s ideas and what he could do with his guitar was just different than anyone else’s output. You could probably explain that better than I can. He and Eric Clapton were the two most innovative guitarists, a lot of people think. Good luck with your guitar playing. You couldn’t have picked a better person to listen to and learn from.
