Jimi was a world class lyricist. His creative imagery and use of metaphore is literal genius... It is amazing me to me that his formal education only reached the 10th grade, yet he wrote the way did.

Jimi wrote some great songs. His vocals were under appreciated. As for his guitar chops, they speak for themselves. He was very creative in the studio with layered guitar tracks, other instruments and vocal tracks.

I saw Jimi Hendrix live in the 60's. He was opening for someone; he wasn't well known in the U.S. yet. A lot of people didn't seem to get him. Boy, was that gonna change soon.

Jimi had some rhythm and blues influences. The guitar on this reminds me of Curtis Mayfield. A beautiful song. There are studio versions that are important to listen to. Jimi had a great producer in Eddie Kramer who really helped with the creative process.

A true classic brother and a fantastic debut album!!! The great old days when nearly every song on the album were fire!! Mitch Mitchell truly a legend on drums, gave the band such a unique sound. He can’t be discounted for his contributions . A jazz drummer during his formative years but man it made him that much better as well as the band!!!
@bluetopguitar1104Ай бұрын
I like Hendrix and Cream, both bands had those jazzy drummers.
@edwardcapobianco2975Ай бұрын
@ without Mitch Mitchell on drums Jimi’s band was nowhere near as good . He was just as much responsible for Hendrix sound as Jimi,some may think it’s a bold or stupid statement but the proof is there. Mitchell barely gets mentioned in the annual top drummers list but I sure as hell haven’t forgotten his contributions. I agree with you on Ginger Baker too. I love the work he did with Cream. I just have to comment, although Cream was a powerhouse and Blind Faith could have really made a tremendous mark on the music world with Baker on drums had they stayed together longer Still that one Blind Faith album is great. I still prefer Derek and the Dominos. I think that’s the best band Clapton ever formed and The Layla album is his best ever. Call me crazy but that’s my opinion. Still I’m with you 100% on Mitchell and Baker.

On July 4th, 1970 I had the honor of being in this great man's presence as he played "Star Spangled Banner" for us. A month and a half later, he left us behind. The guitar strap he wore that night had tan Xs on a broad brown strap. If you see David Gilmour play anything lately, he will probably be wearing that very same strap. His wife bought it for him. Seeing that strap being used now evokes emotions. This sad, beautiful song just makes it more touching. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, Mitch Mitchell is one of the great drummers of all time. In any genre. He had power, touch, great technique and a real jazz sensibility and influence in his playing, which fitted Hendrix like a glove. And I loved that you talked about Jimi's songwriting too, Biz. That's the thing with him. That's why he's revered like he is and regarded to highly. Higher that any other guitarist. It wasn't just the guitar with Hendrix. He was also a genius songwriter and producer. And his singing is incredibly underrated.

I was in the Marines in 89 in Hawaii and got a call from my mom when I was getting ready to go for my nightly run to tell me my Grandma Mary had just died. I had a Sony Walkman I would listen to when I ran and this was the song that was on when I ran that night. I was 20 when than happened and I’m an old man now and I remember that.

A great example of why he was much more than just a great guitar player. He doesn't get enough credit for his songwriting or his singing. I'vve always loved his voice, he could sing really softly like in this song or really belt it out. And he was THE creative force in the band, writing just about every original song they did. And as others have mentioned, Mitch Mitchell's drumming added so much to the music. The drumming in this is so good, and for as great as Jimi was, Mitch had a lot to do with the overall sound. I remember discovering Smash Hits when I was about 14, in the mid 70's, went crazy over that album and became a HUGE Hendrix fan. Two other really great slow ones in the same vain as 'The WInd Cries Mary' are 'Angel' and 'Little Wing'.

Sweet! "The Wind Cries Mary" has long been one of my favorite, if not my favorite, Hendrix tunes. I still have my vinyl copy of the "Smash Hits" album shown in the thumbnail. You're right about influential. You can hear the echoes of this song in particular in a lot of John Frusciante's of Red Hot Chili Peppers guitar playing to cite one example.

Jimi was a huge fan of Bob Dylan and I feel he really channeled him in these lyrics. Also it's probably the greatest apology song ever written. At a dinner party he made fun of his gals cooking at the table which she had prepared...oops! That didn't go over well. I think it was even covered in the theatrical movie "Jimi'. Good movie if your a Jimi fan.

Hi, Biz! Regarding differences between UK album releases versus U.S. album releases, here's some of what I read: -UK albums tend not to include tracks which have been released as singles. -A UK album will generally have up to 14 tracks of popular music. -U.S. albums tend to include tracks which have been released as singles. -A U.S. album will generally have no more than 12 tracks of popular music.
