The light needs eight minutes to get from the sun to our earth; the distance between sun and earth is therefore also described as being 8 light-minutes long. Reaching the stars would mean that we need light-years until we got there. The sun is a giant ball of gas and the central source of energy in our planet-system. She consists of mainly hydrogen and helium. She is 4.6 Million years old and has been burning all this time. Special conditions in its core enable nuclear-fusion, which generates the energy that keeps us warm. The sun is constantly twisting irrgeularly around itself, which is only possible because it consists of gas-masses. This differential rotation also influences the magnetic field which is constantly being distorted. This special magnetic field leads to occurrences like sun-flares. The sun also has an eleven-year cycle where she has alot of dark spots on its surface whenever the magnetic field is very distorted, and she has fewer dark spots whenever the magnetic field is symmetric like the earth's magnetic field. The sun is aging but it will be another 500 Billion years until it becomes very uncomfortable for us.
