Anna is an online tutor of Russian. We agree that input and attention to detail are both important in a language like Russian, in some combination which will vary with the learner. However, motivation is the key. She is a great motivator. Unbelievable! I am so impressed! Your accent is so good, Steve! Your fluency is amazing! I was born, raised and educated in Russia, have been living in Canada for many years now. Thank you for all the videos! You are my inspiration! I just turned 58 and decided to brush up on my very rusty French first and then learn both Italian and Spanish, hopefully, by the time I retire:) I agree that motivation us key. I would add that natural curiosity is another very important factor. Thank you again! Спасибо большое! Чудное видео! Получила громадное удовольствие!

Thank you for the interview with Anna. She is awesome and provided me with my most enjoyable language learning experience. She has a 12 part podcast covering scenes of the movie Завтрак у папы which was absolutely wonderful. I have watched it well over 100 times and know almost every word. It was an outstanding movie that never gets old. It also had four great songs in the movie that led me to amazing Russian/Belorussian /Ukrainian and Georgian groups that I really love. I almost exclusively listen to Russian language music now. Thanks Anna. I have a Russian wife. Before those songs I could not stand the Russian music my wife played (different tastes). I finally found music that I truly love which I know many songs. Definitely helps the vocabulary acgyisition

Hello Steve :) I'm Teresa from Poland. I've just watched your video. I'm very impressed with your fluency in Russian:) I've tried not to read English subtitles but just listen to you and Anna. I used to learn Russian at school many, many years ago but I didn't practise for a long time. To my astonishment, I've understood almost everything. All the best in New Year:)

So excited to begin learning Russian. You inspire me, both of you! It is my goal to read, eventually, the classics in the original. And I am adopted from Russia, so it's about time I learn my native language as best I can here in the States. Thanks so much, Steve and Anna! xx

I study Russian because of its fascinating culture and history. Of course Peter the Great andd Catherine the Great are great historical figures. I am lucky in Pittsburgh we have a fairly large Russian community and they often donate books to the library and they are reasonably priced. So self-study is affordable.

That's a stylish mug :) It is also very pleasant to listen to how Anna speaks. Looks like a very nice person. Steve, you may feel your Russian is rusty but no one else would notice that, because it is actually very good. Contact me if you would like to have another conversation in Russian some day. Good luck with getting back to where you were and improving further.

I learned Russian 2000 - 2002 in the Russian cultural center in Jakarta. I tried to read Dostoyevski and Chekov in their original language with a dictionary next to me. I give up.... I didn't finish Chekov novel though I had made a photocopy of it. Russian is such a difficult language. 1. the cases / padzesh 2. the verbal aspects : perfective-inperfective 3. the verb conjugation. I like to learn foreign languages. I speak German and got Mittelstuffe-1 Zertifikat, which is equal to B2. But now I can only answer B1 questions satisfactorily. My German deteriorates. Now I'm learning Chinese. I got Hsk-3 in October 2019. However, I still speak German better than Chinese and Russian though I don't use it anymore.... I speak German like Steve speaks Russian.... My Chinese and Russian are more or less the same, they're about A2+ or B1- levels..... I read Russian articles better than Chinese, but I listen to Chinese conversations better than Russian. It's easier to read Russian compared to Chinese....

I understand 6 foreign languages : English, German, French, Arabic, Russian, and Mandarin with different levels of abilities. I'm a 50 year-old Indonesian... I speak German pretty well, and been to Munich to learn German. It was long time ago that I reached B2 level, nearly C1. But it seems that my German deteriorates. I also learned French and Russian, but I don't speak those languages very well like my German, and of course, my fluent English. Now I'm learning Mandarin, and I believe my Mandarin reached A2 or B1 level, because I got Hsk-3 in October 2019. The problem is maintaining the ability. Once you get the B level, you start to be fed up with the language you have learned, unless you have a very high motivation and specific purpose to learn the language. And after that the next question is whether you can maintain the level that has been attained. I reached B2 or even almost C1 in German long time ago, but now it seems that I can only answer relatively correct the B1 level. My German deteriorates. Language is a matter of habits and habitation....

Интересно было послушать! 👍🏻 У вас очень хороший русский и тема всегда актуальная для изучения языков~ особенно для языков, являющимися сложными на первых порах) I wonder if you still have any time to read and listen to anything in Russian given the fact how many languages you're learning now 👀 In my experience the hardest part when learning multiple languages is to manage your time wisely so as not to forget what you already know in languages you're not actively improving 😅
@Thelinguist3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ekaterina, I have essentially no time to spend on Russian and therefore my accuracy in using the language has declined. I don't worry about it. I know I can go back to it, enjoy it and when I do that my ability in the language will not only return to its previous level but will move to an even better level. That has always been my experience with languages that I leave for a while. It's simply not possible to spend time on all the languages we would like to, so I prefer not to worry about it.

I`m Norwegian myself and my girlfriend is from Spain. She's fluent in English and speaks Norwegian well. We live and work in Norway. I decided to learn Spanish to be able to speak Spanish with her family in Spain(and my girlfriend off course). I started, but quickly fell off the wagon. There was no inner motivation to do it at the time(also because off a standard boring language course focusing on grammar etc). In my experience you need to have an inner motivation to do it, especially when it comes to difficult languages. That sounds very selfish, but I think it's just how the brain works with dopamin circuits and all that. I stumbled over a video with Steve, talking about Lingq and decided to try it. Now I'm back into learning Spanish(and German) every day, due to having found interesting content that triggers me. Learning the language due to my Spanish family is still a reason for doing it, but that is the secondary reason and not the first. Some people might have the I work offshore on oil rigs in the North sea. I've probably met a thousand international workers that lives and works in Norway. Very few of them take the time to learn Norwegian as you can easily get by in Scandinavia using English. I started to observe many years ago the ones who makes the effort to actually learn our language. They seem to have other motivations than learning the language only because they live and work in that specific country.

what happens if you become very good at speaking a new language and then move on to learn another language? must you be always revising your previous language in order not to forget it?
@Thelinguist3 жыл бұрын
I don't worry about it. The better my level in the language the less I slip. But in any case when I get back to that language, I will find it again I will find the content items that I used to enjoy, and I will explore new content items in that language and I will quickly recover to the level I was at before and even beyond that.
