The Jubutia, a hybrid palm between Jubaea Chilensis and Butia. This one is crossed with a Butia Yatay but other Jubutias may be crossed with other Butia species.

That is Hardier than a Butia too. From my experience of growing Butia they are a short term palm in zone 8b areas along our Pacific Coast. They are prone to center spear loss after a bad freeze. Jubaea is king of the frost beaters for pinnate species. Butia is only long term in the mildest regions on the islands

Awesome palms! I just received 4 from Patrick… BJxQ, BxParajubae Torallyi, and 2 butia yatay x jubaea. Waiting on shipping costs for 5gal jubaea x yatay, and a 4x12” Bx Parajubaea Sunkha. Nice video 👍🏻

I have a Jubutia too. Mine is twelve years old and I bought it as a single spear seedling. The last couple of years, it's really started thickening up and is a little smaller than the jubaea you have there. It's survived -10c (14f) without a slightest issue. I've kept it in a pot as I have moved several times and it's become part of the family..btw I live just north of Manchester which has a similar climate to western BC

How are hybrid palms created? I wonder if someone could make 'create' a hybrid between a pinnate leaved palm and a palm thats as hardy as a Trachycarpus Fortunei, it would be interesting.

Similar type palms are cross bred.. not sure a palmate palm Could be crossed with a pinnate palm..

In this case, you can cross palms from Cocoseae tribe (butia, jubaea, parajubaea, syagrus, cocos, polyandrococos, etc.)

How long have you had the cross specimen? In your experience, does the hardiness match that of a pure Jubaea? And does the speed match that of a pure Butia? Or is literally in between both species (I.e, not as hardy as Jubaea but hardier then the Butia)

It may be too early to tell, it seems very hardy but still slow to grow. I would give it a few years before I could tell for certain of its traits.

Thanks for sharing, I would love to get my hands on a jubutia. I keep reading about this Patrick guy on Palmtalk. Do you know where he's based out of? He just ships palms all over the place?

I have a butiagrus but does a A hybrid between jubaea chilensis and syagrus romanzoffiena (queen palm) exist ? Would be a asome hybrid 😃 or somthing els like parajubaea wich is more coldhardy but againg not that wet tollerant 🤔 The problem with palms in europe is that we have wet cold winters, spear rot is a big problem with us
