I don't think envy is the right emotion here. Betrayal of trust seems to be the running theme. Papyrus tried very hard to protect both of them despite being younger, and to find out that his weaker brother whom he needed to protect was, in fact, stronger than him was a shock. The older brother should have been protecting the younger so he would not have had to do things he did not really want to do. He is not currently considering sans may have been protecting them in a different way than he does.

@@Ra88ful I didn’t say this to compare who is working more. I’m just saying, papyrus is oblivious and won’t even hear sans out. They’re both busting their arses and papyrus feels offended that his weak brother got a rank higher than the royal guards. Sans only has 1 hp. He’s weak and always tired but papyrus never sees him as powerful. Papyrus’ brother just got a higher rank than the royal guards despite being “lazy”. It’s not fair to compare the two since, they’re both wanting to protect one another and doing their best with what they can, but papyrus sees his brother as a joke and felt like he was made a fool of. Despite seeing his brother as a lazy joke, he still cares for him and wants to keep him safe. Sans is the same way. He probably thinks his brother belongs in the castle as a jester and never in his wildest dreams did he ever think his brother would be the judge, and get a rank higher than something he’s not even a part of yet. I’m not comparing, I’m just saying it isn’t fair for papyrus to do that.

That's not the issue. It's the fact that Sans has been lying to him. Pap thought he had it under control that he was getting stronger, better, and more capable only to find out he isn't any closer to his goal and Sans, who he thought he was stronger than, turned out to be more capable than him. He feels betrayed and that all this time has been wasted for nothing. Whether he cares or not is not the issue. Papyrus is just not as great as he thought he was and that cuts him DEEP and what's worse is he trusted Sans too.

I mean I can understand why papyrus feels that way he wasted a lot of his childhood growing strong thinking he had to to protect his “lazy” big brother instead of just being a kid who knows what things paps had to do at a young age thinking it was all to protect sans and in a way sans let it happen instead if showing he was strong enough to take care of them both . Instead of fighting his battles he let paps so he had to keep up the persona of someone who wasn’t the judge. Though sans did protect paps from things unseen and did a lot for paps just things that he doesn’t see Or doesn’t need to see like frisk . Papyrus will never understand his laziness is a byproduct of a lot of stuff that he is oblivious to. Both are in the wrong but both are too stubborn to communicate

Making it seem to me at least on some level In paps eyes he lost some of his childhood "being the responsible one" 2:09 to 2:20 pretty much sums up to me that pap had to grow up fast in his eyes to take care of sans when sans should have be the responsible one and token care of pap.

@@10RexTheWolf01 it sucks yeah but I think sans didn't really have a choice to be the judge either be was forced into it or was the only one who has the powers to be the judge (my personal view is of the lader seeing as it seems he is the only known character throughout undertale who had karmic retribution maybe another monster does we just dont see it but it seems he was "born" to be the judge or Gaster though his experiments gave him the power of karmic retrubution though experimentation making him the perfect fit to be judge even if that wasn't the intention it all goes off what theory of Gasters relationship to the bros you have since nothing is really canon)

The way I see UnderFell is Asgore tries to get the souls to reset to see his family, Undyne is a wanted vigilante for trying to assassinate him, making Papyrus the head of the Royal Guard. Papyrus and Sans are seen as assassination targets as a royal affiliated, so he would abuse Sans to make him stronger as protection, and not seem like pushovers. Sans disagrees with the rule of kill or be killed, and he wishes, like Undyne, to use the souls to free monsters. He’s a pretty heroic Sans, just can’t show it. The hierarchy of strength in UnderFell goes Asgore-Undyne-Papyrus-Sans, then the rest are just twice as strong as Classic Undertale, which would be Undyne-Asgore-Toriel-Papyrus, then Sans. Undyne got close to killing Asgore, and she had enough reason to be in her undying form to do that, and then Papyrus and Sans have Royal training, so they’re stronger than twice, too. In this situation that looks like Pacifist, Sans doesn’t want to hurt Frisk, since he already appreciates them for saving Papyrus. But he’s either taking the soul, or he teaches you it’s kill or be killed to protect them. Papyrus is still stronger than Sans in UnderFell, that’s why he is counted the head of the Royal Guard.

The way you see underfell actually has its own alternate timeline and fangame for once its a asgore fangame and it basically seemingly follows your way of seeing underfell but there are several other versions of the underfell au and its story
