INFORMATIONS sur cette vidéo A LIRE ABSOLUMENT ###
Anne-Marie and Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE along with Michel GUISS DJOMOU have set up very large mirrors in a forest in the west of Gabon. In this natural and uncontrolled environment numerous camera traps have been placed in front of each of these mirrors in order to film animals’ reactions to their own reflection from different angles and at different distances. Over the past few months an imposing male leopard has become addicted to his reflection. The leopard's frequent rubbing of his reflection in the mirror has coated the mirror with the oils that protect his fur, grease from of his paw pads and drool. The dirtied mirror makes it difficult for the camera traps to film a clear image of the animals' reflections. (Robin Alcorn translation).
Animals frequenting these mirrors often have difficulty seeing their own image behind a cloud of drool. Also these camera trappers often have to go into the jungle to wash the mirrors.
Did you observe the chimp having an intimidating charge from 00:47 to 00:57?
It is a single-armed (hand and right forearm cut in a trap?). It was first filmed by our cameras eight years ago. Despite his handicap, he remains one of the dominant males in the group.

Hmmmm? I was thinking.... Why not broaden the experiment by placing hand-held mirrors on the ground.(would they grasp the handle?) Would the chimps response be different? Or another thought just occurred...... Why not place a mirror on the ground covered with Just food. As the chimp starts eatting the food , gradually exposing his reflection ,what would be the reaction? Just a crazy scientific thought.Being scientists , and scientist do crazy things, I wonder why they hadn't thought of various paradigms, in a range of experiments using reflection devices. It's like when I was a kid there was always some prize at the bottom of a cereal box or Cracker-Jacks box.

In felines, lions are genetically programmed to live in a pride while leopards are genetically programmed to live alone. Lone lions are males who have been driven from the group. So this leopard male doesn’t feel lonely. He doesn't have the need for companions. He only meets females during the mating season. On our KZbin channel kzbin.infovideos are published more than 100 videos shot by our trap cameras in the jungle in Gabon. A majority of them show encounters of wild animals with our 6 large mirrors. *_A comment like yours is comforting after reading numerous comments calling for the dismantling of these sadistic mirrors! I break the monotony of the daily life of some animals in this area of the equatorial forest._* Wild free-ranging animals can go to these mirrors, as they see fit, and stay ahead as long as they want. No food is left by humans near mirrors to encourage them to come. They are not imprisoned for life in pens or cages with the distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars, eating the food they have neither picked nor hunted. They are not tied as dogs with leashes, locked in flats especially with dressing rooms equipped with a large mirror. I would like to point out that among the wild animals meeting these mirrors placed in this remote region of Gabon, some seem happy to look at themselves in these mirrors: as these leopards: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHaTgoWcZ9Wdp8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/el6kkqVvh5qdmLs as these chimpanzees: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGWboX2GZ52Gf8k as these young gorillas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWS2gpdnpMSlZpI kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc Look at how the silverback gorilla's behaviour has evolved near the mirrors his family is looking at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc?t=155 Look at how the gorilla family's walking speed increases when they approach a mirror whose location they have memorized kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc Please do not forget to read the description attached to each of our 160 videos published on our channel kzbin.infovideos

I've received a very interesting explanation from Bob The Ranger about this very important drooling ( kzbin.info ) This leopard "is definitely acting like he sees a rival male, with some confusion as to why there is no smell or sound. Once he gets to the mirror he realizes there is some kind of physical barrier between him and his rival so is making sure that barrier carries his scent in his side, he us seeing his rival do the same thing so the drooling intensifies"

That is a huge leopard, easily 180cm to 200cm tall easily between 85kg to 100kg. He probably regularly hunts those chimps, gorillas, and mandrils since he frequently visits the same spot they do. *In the area where my mirrors are placed, the main carnivore (except for poachers who avoid going there because of the presence of more than 70 trap cameras kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHrShoBmi9OMpMk ) is the leopard. It is a solitary animal that does not hunt in a troop. It avoids attacking solitary male elephants as well as families with children because of their power of reaction in case of attack. It avoids attacking a calf in a herd of forest buffalo because of their aggressiveness. It avoids attacking great apes (gorillas and chimpanzees) because of their cohesion and moreover it does not climb trees well and it avoids attacking mandrills because on the one hand they are in troops of 150 to 300 individuals which have very sharp teeth and climb trees very easily. . Moreover the flesh of these mammals is not very tasty except for the buffalo calf. The leopard appreciates small game such as small antelopes (blue duikers), porcupines and especially palm rats.* It should be noted that chimpanzees, frugivores, insectivorous and herbivores occasionally eat small monkeys such as the putty-nosed monkey (Cercopithecus nictitans). Thus there is a kind of statuquo between elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, mandrills, buffaloes and leopards that avoid meeting each other, all the more so because in this forest, there is no competition for food, fruits and stems as marantaceae, being numerous in all seasons. So a fight between a silverback gorilla and a leopard cannot take place. Watch my 180 other homemade videos on the channel and don't forget to read the attached description each time. Why would we be attacked if our arrival was loud enough to warn the animals of our presence and so that they would not be surprised by arrival of the mirror cleaners (My wife, I and Michel = no park employees for no rangers are close by. Leopards, chimpanzees and gorillas are grateful to us and to Michel for the regular cleaning of the 6 mirrors placed in their region. So they prefer to wait nearby until we have finished our work and left the mirror area to come back to observe perfectly either their own image, that of a rival or that of a female leopard in heat. I rely a lot on my wife's very good hearing to detect the presence of animals and to avoid surprising them. For example, a mother elephant (with baby) who has heard us from a distance will warn us to turn back, while a mother with her cub, surprise by our presence nearby will react more severely. Look at this beautiful river crossing location: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5zQgXWiabODrJo Its our choice to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion. *A comment like yours cheers us up after:* - my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest for the maintenance of our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. - reading after some comments reproaching us for the traumas generated by our large mirrors placed in a remote region of the jungle in Gabon, where wild animals live freely. They can go to these mirrors, as they see fit, and stay in front of them, as long as they want. No food is placed by humans next to mirrors to encourage them to come. - editing of videos with for each one a description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... Curious if you are getting more repeat visitors since you started the project. Do they seem to have altered their paths at all to view the mirror? I mean obviously they are intrigued, but curious if once they leave they forget about it. I haven’t watched much of your videos, maybe 10 or so, but I think this is a great idea. Koko was used to mirrors as she grew up in a human environment.
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly a human environment aware of the properties of the mirror was very useful to Koko, to help him with words, in his learning of the mirror. In animals and humans alike, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way. In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection. In the dominant free ranging male gorilla in the jungle, this learning is much more difficult because : - he's not helped by his parents - it does not receive explanations about the reflective properties of the mirror - he hasn't been exposed to mirrors since he was a kid. Head of a family of a dozen members, females and children, this silverback must protect it. Faced with the image of a gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to stole some of his females, he has only the idea. *Pacifist, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight in these primates* , he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. In bipedal position to show his corpulence, by raising a cloud of dust, by lateral charges and very powerful and loud slaps on the ground, he tries to intimidate and push away this reflection which, strangely, adopts the same attitudes as his own. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror. In my description attached to my video, *I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas* and the behaviour of other members of his family. Hit the “show more “ option, I attach a description with more information to each of my 130 videos published on my channel. kzbin.infovideos

You can actually teach your dog to identify itself, dogs can’t really do it but if they are exposed to the mirror they eventually learn it’s their reflection, it helps if you sit with it next to you and do your hair or makeup with them they’ll eventually understand, I don’t know if all dogs can but mine could she liked wearing make up on her eyes shestared into the mirror if my sister puts a little color on them.
