Following the Second World War, a number of war crimes trials took place in which many of the perpetrators of the Holocaust were brought to justice. The most famous trials were the Nuremberg Trials, and many high ranking Nazis were brought in front of the courts, however one of the first trials was the Belsen Trials which put those guilty of war crimes at Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp into the media. Josef Kramer, Irma Grese, Johanna Bormann, Elizabeth Volkenrath and a number of others were sentenced to death for their crimes at the camp, and amongst them was Franz Stofel.
Stofel arrived at Belsen a few days before the liberation, however was still executed for crimes he committed there. He had forced over 600 prisoners to embark on a death march from a different camp as the Allies and the Red Army were spotted near the camp he was over-seeing. On the death march, the conditions were horrific with the prisoners having hardly any food, no shoes at times and were forced to walk 30kms a day. If they slowed down or stopped they were shot, and Stofel and his SS guards executed dozens of innocent people because of this.
When they arrived at Belsen after walking a long way, the camp was liberated days later and Stofel being a member of the SS was forced to help dispose of the bodies that had just been left at Belsen. The camp itself was in dire state with disease and death lurking around every corner. However after the clean up, Stofel was placed on trial and was sentenced to death. It was Albert Pierrepoint who acted as the executioner who carried out the sentence of death for Franz Stofel.
So join us today as we look at, 'The JUSTIFIED Execution Of Franz Stofel. The EVIL Monster Of Belsen.'

My grandfather was liberated from Bergen Belsen, he spoke well of the British troops, apparently a soldier offered him a sledge hammer to enact some justice on a camp guard, I asked if he did it, he said no he would have but he didn't have the strength to raise the hammer. Love this series, thank you.

My Great-Aunt Eday was also at Bergen Belsen, she was held and used as a "comfort girl" for the guards, even though she was only 14 when sent there. In 1945, just 5 days before the Allies liberated the camp, she gave birth to a baby boy. The commandant personally murdered that baby, as the British were entering the gate, by smashing his head against a wall, then throwing the body into an oven. My Aunt ended up marrying one of the British soldiers and emigrating to Texas.... I learned of her history when I asked her about the tattoo when I was 8.

I agree. All the victims did wrong was to be born into a religion (or a culture) that they had no choice in. In another life they could have been your college room-mate or your brother-in-law or your next door neighbour. We can compose operas, paint masterpieces and travel to the moon but we can also be the most sadistic creatures on the planet. If we don't sort ourselves out (and soon) this is all going to end badly.

It doesnt shock me as I ve read too many survivor testimonies and seen docs. and read histories. Why no one thinks that even poetic justice wont intervene, Ill never know. Russia was pillaged and even probably raped by nazis; then 2 million German women were raped too. I heard 8 to 80 but I think that wasnt entirely true. Heard that Russians in Berlin left children alone and Zhukov's group would have bean courtmartialed had they raped. Otherwise been 4 million probably. Germans didnt think through the consequences if they realized exactly what their troops and friends did. A lot I never knew about my country's armed forces behavior but then WW2 was so pervasive--different in each country, depending on who, esp. With that racial theory. Hitler's speeches are chilling. He was wise to off self & so was Eva considering what he did.. I know many gerrnans spent long time in gulag if didnt escape. But race theory caused the worst part. German girls escaped after war by marrying allied soldiers--Americans anyway. My Uncle did. She got citizenship & divorced him. Had 10 yr old son as FUHRER bride.. Uncle died young in San Diego. Never met wench. My uncle was naive, I think. Never marry foreigner unless all ready have citizenship. They almost always screw you over, even if just with money or credit. They have no pity on you when refugee or just on visa. I wonder divorce rate of foreign & domestic citizens??! Sure, some sincere, but not most in my experience.

Immediately after the war people were blood thirsty for capital punishment against the wrongdoers, especially high ranking Nazis and murderous camp staff. After a few years of meting out these punishments, however, people had had enough and wanted a return to normalcy. So the sentences got more lenient or for existing prisoners the sentences got commuted. And alot of Germans who had committed or sanctioned or were complicit in horrible war crimes, got off easy or altogether.

I was always amazed how Germany managed to go from a 100 000 men military without tanks, heavy artillery and air force, to a largest and most powerful military in Europe (maybe even world) in a span of 6-7 years between 1933-1940. It scares me to think what would happen if China went mad and decided to rearm at incredible speed and funnel most of its income towards the rearming. They would have a 1000 ship Navy, 10 000 aircraft Air force and 10 million men Army in 2028.. But then again, nukes are perfect for large military formations, whether they're men, tanks, ships or aircraft..

Actually Mark WW1 ended in 1918 so they had til 1939--21 years, like a generation. Bunches of 16 to 21 yr. olds. At least even if not a lot of men, they probably still had enough with the leftovers from Great War plus they took younger men than USA or Brits did. And maybe to 40 or 45. We only took til 39. That was draft cutoff. My dad was 29 when war over.. Also in occupied countries Germans took enlistments in France, the Baltic states. Lithuania, Hungary and Bulgaria too. They even had some Arabs. One soldier from France went in Waffen SS. He lost an eye and arm, and they let him reenlist after recuperation. He said he didnt want to slip into mediocrity. Cant imagine after how they treated French. Didnt take slavs.
@SjohnX
@SjohnX 2 жыл бұрын
Germany didn't funnel the majority of its income toward rearmament until about 1942. And don't forget that the allies also agreed to disarmament in the treat of Versailles yet they ignored it. Just adds a bit of context to it.

@drgonzo305
@drgonzo305 2 жыл бұрын
@@dovidell no really got punished for unit 731, the results of their work was worth more than justice that day. I think the soviets caught some of the people working in the unit and put them on trial but I don't remember what happened, hopefully it was bad. I think that letting those doctors off for their research was one of the top travesties of justice after the war. I seen this one documentary about it and they were interviewing one of the low ranking student doctors (they sent a lot of young teens training to be doctors and medics to the unit to learn how to do surgery on live patients, to learn how to fix a gunshot wound they'd just bring in a young healthy Chinese girl they just snatched of the street and then one of the soldiers would shoot her in the leg and the kid doctor would have to decide if he needs to amputate or dig the bullet out all with no anesthesia. And if she died they bring in a new girl and shoot her some where else, but if the first girl lives they just shoot her again and on and on until she was dead) he said that after they'd infect some one with some disease they would dissect them alive in front of an audience and the doctor said that the young Russian girls were the most "popular" to come watch and then that made him chuckle. I've never actually wanted to attack the picture on the t.v. before that but these people were so evil theyre enjoyment was watching a teenage girl who a few weeks ago was walking in her village in Russia probably blissfully ignorant about the barbarians that were about to attack and then after all the horror that brought her to 731 now she's going to be cut open neck to naval and have her organs taken out one by one while an audience of doctors happily watches. Even Mexican drug cartels have more humanity in them then those doctors and soldiers and the man that planned, arranged and set into motion every atrocity that happened there got to live as a well respected doctor in Japan after and finally live out his last days with a family practice set up. All so we could get the research for weapons that are essentially useless because they're so dangerous and uncontrollable after release. At least with nukes you have a good idea of the destruction area and level of fallout and direction it will go. Bioweapons, 2 people "accidentally" get sick at a research center in the middle of china and in 2 years the whole world is still infected and the virus is mutating. Imagine if that was small pox or ebola, it's unusable and for that knowledge we let someone who was responsible for things that would sicken Nazi concentration camp guards whose prison camp killed 100% of the people that walked through those doors in the most horrific ways, men, women, children, babies, pows americans, Russians, Europeans, raped girls in order to get them pregnant so they could experiment on the fetus(their own fucking kid) and cut it out while the girl is fully awake and if she survives then it's going to on until she experimented on until she dies. Honestly that man deserved to watch his whole family wiped out in front of him and then tortured to death over years then thrown into a incinerator but instead he died free and happily surrounded by his loved ones who gave him a proper funeral.

Generally and I know that there are some appalling exceptions, I find it strange how British prisoners seemed to have avoided the heavy handed and despicable Nazi atrocities. An interesting topic would be to look at the German occupation of the Channel Islands. what about the atrocities commited by the americans on hiroshima and nagasaki,the majority of those killed were civilians?you think after one bomb your conscience would be pricked,japan inflicted huge casualties amongst the allied forces,they became a deadly force even with there backs against the wall and the germans out of the picture,american answer, lets give em 2 bombs that will kill everyone without discrimination and cause a enviromental disaster just so we can go home early,by the way what do you think is worse, atrocities to millions of jewish civilians,men ,women ,children young and old?,or atrocites to american soliders who were sent to kill japanese soliders?some perspective please

The liberating armies brought food, clothing and cigarettes for the rescued prisoners so it was probably from the soldiers. Also back in the 40s cigarettes or Tobacco was given out like food rations because so many people smoked.

It was at Hamelin prison. The Condemned in single narrow cells would hear the trapdoor drop each time. The women were hanged first to reduce their wait. There were three women and then the men. The condemned were hanged by Pierrepoint in twos. They are buried in unmarked graves, 2 to a grave in the Hamelin Am Wehl Cemetery

Hi Per, unfortunately the creative commons footage as in the footage that is license free and available to use under fair use is rather limited, so apologies if it does show the Americans at times. Fortunately the US are a lot more liberal allowing use of footage that us British are.

'High ranking'? Stofel was a 'Hauptscharrfurher'... the equivalent to a US Master Sergeant E8 or British Company Sergeant Major. Yes, he was a senior NCO with all the authority that implies, but he was STILL an enlisted man. I enjoy your channel, my friend, but please be careful of hyperbole like this. When you teach history, it's important to be accurate.
