Unfortunately, as time goes by, more people ARE forgetting, or not even learning about it. This is why I think the history o the Holocaust (and other genocides throughout history) should be taught in schools, so that the knowledge remains to be passed on as a warning to future generations.

While in the Army and stationed in Germany, I visited The Dachu concentration camp back in 1990. The human ovens still smelled of burnt flesh. It was a surreal experience. Many Germans after the war claimed they knew nothing of the atrocities that were committed in the concentration camps. I have my doubts about that.

The Konzentrationslager Nohra (in Thüringen) was the first concentration camp of the national-socialists, opened on 3 March 1933, albeit a shortlived one as it was replaced by Bad Sulza, which itself got replaced by Buchenwald. Dachau was the first permanent concentration camp, opened in late March 1933, but not the first overall.

@@markmullin4246 I was talking specifically about Germany and concentration camps built by the Nazis. Read what I said in my post. I never referred to what happened outside of Germany. Dachau was the second concentration camp opened by the NSDAP after Nohra, and the first permanent one in the country by the national-socialists. Whether Italy built such camps in Libya or not was never the subject. Of course there were other concentration camps before (albeit not known under that name), I'm not ignorant of history.
