Over the last 13 years, the Kontinental Hockey League has cemented its reputation as the highest level of competition in Europe, but one player who has spent his entire career in his homeland despite receiving several opportunities to suit up in the best league in the world has earned a reputation as the greatest player of them all...

I do not want to be much of a downer, I have admired Mr. Mozyakin for many, many years now, but in a regard of his being the very first player to ever reach 1000 points in Russian top flight, one should also be aware of the fact that Russians/Soviets did not count assists on goal at all until about the mid-1960s, and moreover, even after that they counted first assists ONLY until, I think, the end of the Soviet era. Therefore, lots of magnificent Russian/Soviet players of the past "lost" lots of points during the olden times. But then again, what Mr. Mozyakin has managed to achieve is still a tremendous feat, nonetheless.

Thid dude was treated like a king, playing in his home country, and being a man amongst boys. I think one of if not the main reason is also the huge untaxed dollars he made in Russia.

I've been a Metallurg Magnitogorsk fan for many years and Mozyakin has just been an incredible player to watch. Not that he's doing a lot of flashy plays or so, but he's just.. there, passing or being in the perfect position to score.
@subraxas

He's like Gretzky. Gretzky also did not skate as superbly as Pavel Bure or Paul Kariya did. He did not have the shot of Al MacInnis. He did not have the stick technique of Alexei Kovalev. But he (almost) always managed to be at the right spot and to make the right decision. That is the hockey thinking, the "hockey vision".

@@lukejaffray2518 You based your whole "theory" on one player? Lol. EVERY Russian player is from KHL (Except Yakupov who sucked and Kucherov who is top 5 in NHL and came from CHL). There are several Russian players from KHL in the upper echelon of the NHL like there's several Russian players from the KHL that didnt make it in NHL. Just this year Kirill Kaprizov is lighting the league up and he was an KHL star that came over to NHL. There will be both superstars and busts from every European league like there is from the CHL and college hockey, there is no difference, just national bias from you. The reason he didnt go to NHL is because he didnt need to, he earned more money in KHL than he ever would in NHL (tax free dollars) and was a superstar in his own country with his own culture. Im not saying he would dominate the NHL, but there is no reason to think he wouldnt be a very good player.

Guys like Kucherov, kusnetsov, ovechkin were drafted inton the NHL and never left cause the NHL saw their value... this Mozyakin is amazing in the KHL but hes not playing the worlds best talents or worlds best goalies so if he came to the NHL i dont think hed be as good as he was in the KHL

Also the reason he was drafted so late, as well as some other Russian guys who dropped. Can be attributed to the difficulty that teams had getting guys to sign. Malkin took time, so did Kucherov, and many thought Vlad would never go to the Blues

As a Canadian who's favorite player is Ovechkin this may be a bit of an unpopular opinion but I got mass respect for anyone on the other side of the pond who opts to stay and play in the homeland instead of chasing the fame and big bucks in North America; although I'm sure a guy like Mozyakin isn't lacking in either of those back home. This doesn't really apply so much to Russians or Sweds as hockey is already pretty popular there but other countries where hockey isn't quite as popular it can be a great thing for the game for top players to stay home and generate some buzz to help grow the game. Although he did leave for North America the buzz in Australia around Nathan Walker would have surely helped grow the game more had he stayed home or will if he ever returns home to the AIHL (which I've watched online since the 2012 finals weekend and been a diehard fan of ever since [GO ICE!]). The same can be said for other sports which aren't as popular over here, a great example of which would be Alphonso Davies who although not being born in Canada moved to Canada at age five and grew up in Canada. Being from Edmonton where Davies went to high school I can tell you he is the only reason I've had a conversation with anyone about soccer since the playground at recess in elementary school. If he was playing for Edmonton FC it would surely stir up some buzz around town and likely get some more people interested in soccer and I say that as a person who loves every sport except soccer, tennis, badminton (if that counts as idk if there's a professional league anywhere) and not really into curling

He'd be great. but not Gretzky level not even close. He's basically getting the equivalent of a 80-100 points a year in the NHL. except for the 85 point year. that's like getting 120 in the NHL. Incredible but not best player ever. (Assuming he gets the equal amount of points per game)

If the HHOF isn't truly one for primarily the NHL (I know there are exceptions like Vladislav Tretiak, Valeri Kharlamov, and the late Frank Mathers), Sergei Mozyakin has to be considered as he's played at a high level for so long...he put up 41 points last season as a 38-year old, and will be 40 years old on March 30. I would believe that the reason for a flier draft pick being taken on Mozyakin by Columbus was in the off chance that he'd come over. But Mozyakin never did, despite receiving offers to do so.
