Hey Harry! Hope this comment reaches you. I know you are taking a break from Lovecraft themed video games but I have a suggestion when you want to do one in the future. I recommend playing The Last Door, both games, part 1 and 2. I consider them one of the best video games inspired by Lovecraft and E. A. Poe. Liked the video as always!

Apparently parents abandoning their kids to fend for themselves like this is a common occurrence in Japan, which I expected to be the case since Chilla's Art usually makes games themed around pertinent matters there. It may not be among their strongest games, but the story and theme is still really sad, and left me thinking about it.

It's hard to put your kids in Japan's daycare because there's long waiting list and I've never heard of people there hiring babysitters (probably because it's pricey) + they mostly live far away from relatives (especially if they're in big cities like Tokyo) so no people to help them take care of the kids.

To me, the clown is a representation of the boy in the future. He never had a childhood, and never grew up - because his sister had trapped him in an abusive cycle trying to please the neglectful mother. The trauma he experienced of the dead kidnapper's mother and his own mother dying broke him. I think that is what the cage in the clown scene means: an innocent child trapped from forces beyond his control.
@fulltimeslackerii8229

it’s not that deep. it was just meant to be a scary red herring
@dolphindiver7724

I had a similar theory. That or the clown was just a representation of the boy’s fears of his sister having been kidnapped. I do definitely think the clown wasn’t just some random thing and did have some real purpose in the game
@Jhud69
@Jhud69 11 ай бұрын
I think it's more straightforward than that honestly. It's both a red herring as well as the kid's paranoia that comes out of trauma - he already wets the bed which is a common sign of trauma in children and well, knowing their mother she was at LEAST emotionally abusive. Then she abandons them and then his sister disappears, all while there are rumors about a killer clown. He probably just dreamed that his sister was caught by the killer clown, simple as that.

I really like Chillas arts' stuff. Even if the stories aren't very long or complex, they effectively build a sense of confusion and dread in the players, and oftentimes tell very intense stories about things people really experience, like abuse, stalking or abandonment.

I don’t get why she’d go through the trouble to get her kids back when she wanted to get rid of them from the start?! She could’ve just left for good at that point, why didn’t she?

...Mr Kidnapper meant no harm? Despite all the dead bodies in the attic? Oh I see. It was just that somehow despite being chased by the guy who is obviously nuts, nobody called the police. They took the kids to foster care but nobody checked the creepy guy's house?

He has an intellectual disability, an adult who has the mind of a child due to the trauma, so yeah he meant no harm. Kinda like Norman Bates except he wasn't killing random people.
@Cog_Nomen
@Cog_Nomen 11 ай бұрын
There's one dead body: his mother's. The only other potential body is in the ending where the kids' mother attacks him, triggering a flashback to his own abuse. When he's chasing the protag, he isn't being a violent serial killer; he's obediently following the older sister's instructions. Yes, he's obviously "nuts", but part of the point is that he might seem "creepy", but the actual monsters are the two abusive mothers. The game shows examples of protag's friends' mothers being kind and nurturing, so it isn't some broad anti-mother thing... wouldn't an equally good question be why the police just gave these children back to their mother, who hadn't even reported them missing for weeks, without investigating *that* house? It's crazy, across the different endings: she abandoned them for so long that they're "kidnapped", taken in by a friend's parent, and sent to an orphanage, all without any sign of their mother, yet when she suddenly shows up, the authorities don't charge her with anything for endangering/neglecting her children - just hand her the children to take back and re-abandon.
@Cog_Nomen
@Cog_Nomen 11 ай бұрын
Oh, and in the endings where the protag goes to the houses of friends whose parents call the police, they do go investigate and arrest the kidnapper. The only reason they don't immediately in one route is because the friend's mother the protag goes to for help works with abused children, so she goes to talk to the kidnapper first. She doesn't search like the police would so she doesn't find the body, and based on how his kidnapping was all doing what the older sister told him, she gets the impression that he's just mentally a child, so not any danger as long as the kids leave him alone, and decides not to tell the police.

Almost makes me feel like as if all these indie game devs are building their horror games from like the exact same template which has it included - and only a few bother to remove it.
