I actually like that she was guilty. It’s a subversion of the trope you mention exactly. They’re always innocent and come back for revenge. And a woman who killed a child she didnt know out of spite would absolutely come back as a serial killer ghost to avenge her death.

Yeah I was immediately struck by how much more effective it is. WAY scarier that a ghost is also a serial killer. If you're innocent and get lynched or whatever it makes more sense to come back for revenge against those specific people. But that's not scary as a viewer unless you empathize with the lynchers , which is a tall order. They usually get around this by making the reveal of the lynch type crime be a main characters parent but then you're looping right back around to the innocent victim killing children for their fathers crimes. Lame.

That’s why the 2010 a nightmare on elm street should have stuck with that premise. It’s such a good way to make the villain understandable.

I think Slappy was a reimagining of creepy ass dummies from the 1950's. I can't remember the name, but there was an episode of the Twilight Zone where a ventriloquist whose dummy comes to life and starts hunting him down. Slappy looks just like the doll in that episode. At least Jeff Dunham made ventriloquism a lot more funnier and less creepy!😅

I would love for a sequel or a prequel of this movie. The story was interesting and honestly I always wanted to see more of Mary Saw. I love the fact that she is just a bad guy, not someone misunderstood, a victim, a failed artist or something among those lines. She is just a bad guy that killed a child, you know what I mean? I would love to see a movie about her.
@mellemadswoestenburg1296
@mellemadswoestenburg1296 27 күн бұрын
A sequel is probably not going to happen since there is nothing to expand upon. She accomplished her goal, all the families she was after are now wiped out. A prequel could technically happen but I'm not sure if it's necessary. We already know everything about Mary Shaw and how she ended up as the vengeful wraith she is in the movie. So as much as I would love some sort of expansion of this story I don't think it'll work.

The only way I think a sequel could happen would be like a Blair Witch direction of people interested in ghost hunting/urbex exploring Raven’s Fair. By now the town would definitely be a ghost town.

@XvFenixvX 13 күн бұрын
@mellemadswoestenburg1296 there's all sorts of stuff to explore in the middle (after dying but before the current events). Things like the killings happening IN the town. Things revolving around those early years of haunting and how people discovered who it was doing them would be neat. It takes a lot to terrorize an entire town into being petrified of even saying your name

Its been years since ive seen this movie mentioned anywhere! Thank you so much for covering it, dead silence is such a good movie! So many movies use sound to cue the jumpscares and stuff, but the moments when the sound completely cuts out in this movie are some of the best moments to me! Its one of the few movies ive ever seen that does that! Idk if there are others that can achieve the same sort of thing, but it works so well here!

You did a great job. So happy I KZbin suggested it. I agree this movie is under apricated. Back in the day when women were found unable to have children their marriage would fall through. I think it's kinda just one of those things most older people understood back when the movie was released, is that she couldn't have children which would cause her to try and find love somewhere else. Some people use pets to fill the hole in their heart. I think everyone has or know of an aunt with a bunch a cats that never had kids. Marian may of warned Jamie but Henry spilled all the beans and told the whole story.

This movie TERRIFIED me as a kid, 7 year old me stole this from my sisters room and watched it on her old portable DVD player and by god being the first horror movie i had ever watched i wasn't ready. I've watched it since and i don't find it all that scary anymore but at the time i couldn't look at dolls for months. My mother had a porcelain doll cabinet and i cried every time I saw it. I would have been in more trouble for taking my sisters DVD player but I guess the traumatization was punishment enough lol.

12:34 Assaulting an officer? Are you in his hotel room on duty, in an official capacity? Or are you just antogonizing your primary suspect off hours and handling evidence without proper chain of custody? Just because your day job is in the porcine sector doesn't mean you can walk around antagonizing people without consequence. Actually, i live in America and after a moments reflection this may be the most realistic part of the movie. If this case went to court any halfway decent defense attorney would have a field day with Officer "we have Donny Walburg at home". And you KNOW Joeys rich and guilty dad is hiring the dream team. That trial would lead to a dozen Kardashians down the line.

Definitely underappreciated! And right up my alley for supernatural horror. Three movies defined my childhood horror experience, two of which apply to Dead Silence: The first was Poltergeist; we saw it at a drive-in theater, and the scene with the clown absolutely messed me up! Because I HAD that clown, and I'm pretty sure I was around the same age as the boy. Within 5 minutes of being tucked into bed that night, I couldn't take it anymore and was screaming for my parents to "get it out". Never saw that toy again. And I generally hate clowns to this day. The second incident was a few years later. On Saturdays, after the cartoons ended, one of the local stations would do a double-feature of B-horror/cult movies followed by Hong Kong Action Theater (truly, my '80s childhood was blessed). One of the horror movies that was shown was Anthony Hopkins in MAGIC. And while I didn't fully realize everything that was actually going on in that movie, the ventriloquist dummy has stuck with me ever since. I recently rewatched it, and it is a very tense movie. Anyway, these 2 movies set me up nicely for Dead Silence, which doesn't get great ratings from most, but that doesn't matter to me. Just to finish the grounding of my childhood horror experience, the third movie was The Howling. I first saw parts of it when I returned home from staying the night at my friend's across the street - I just wasn't comfortable over there, so I left, and no one was in the living room at the time, so I crawled behind this cabinet-table in the corner between the couch and my dad's recliner. It had 2 shelves that allowed me a perfect view of the tv, which was on HBO showing The Howling. I managed to watch a decent amount of it before I freaked out from one of the werewolf attacks. Not sure which one, but I got loud and my folks came from their room pretty fast; especially since I wasn't supposed to be there. Oddly, within the month, I was able to watch the whole movie at a babysitter's. 😆 Good times.

The idea of a ghost coming back because she was killed for her actual crimes is a decent path to take. It shows that she's deluded enough to think she shouldn't have been killed, and that her evil goes beyond the grave. She's meant to be a monster, not someone you feel sympathy for, and your supposed to be wary of her returning in a sequel.

Just saw this video on my feed. I haven’t watched yet but I have to say, I don’t care what anyone says, Dead Silence was one of my favorite horror movies along with Stay Alive. Were they good? No. Were they exceptionally acted? Not really. I don’t know what it is about them specifically, but they just hit me a different kind of way than other horror movies. I found Dead Silence’s rhyme about Mary Shaw actually very haunting and the twist did cause me to gasp out loud when I first saw it. Many people will say that they saw it coming and quite frankly, outside of one angle, I did too, but still… when it hit… I still gasped.

Don’t know what happened in Mary Shawn’s life during her childhood, teen, and or young adult years but something in her life happened to her for her to go down a dark path. Love your channel, Cogan! I’m glad it was in my recommended. Anyhoo, I have to disagree with the alternate ending being better for “Dead Silence.” The stepmother reminded me of a very young Mary Shaw from the start. Like Mary had been reborn. In fact, I thought that’s which way the film arc was going to go - well…I guess it kind of moved in that direction with the stepmother revealed to be the perfect doll in the end. For me, a possessed woman would have been generic and digging up a doll for revenge doubly generic. Some things are better left in mystery and TMI in horror can destroy the atmosphere. We knew Jaime’s father was a jackass when he had his former wives painted over. He didn’t need to be an abusive husband in a flashback in order to be labeled a ‘dick’ who had it coming. I’ll have to add this movie to a watch list. It looked really awesome!

To be fair it is realistic that even without the tongue or proper evidence, he would be the primary suspect. Also unfortunately some cops are more focused on putting people behind bars than actually getting justice for the victims and their families. In a recent case, a man’s dad went missing and the police tried to gaslight him into believing he killed him. They even threatened to kill his dog if didn't confess. Turn out his dad was alive but he was just out of town. Also, let's not forget about the poor lady whose baby was eaten by dingos and they blamed her for the baby's death. Or how they blamed Richard Jewell for the bombing he stopped.

I can imagine a number of ways, to how it could be possible for JAMIE ASHEN, to still be alive, and have him appear in a sequel. I remember JAMIE was freaking out, of what he had discovered, close to the end of the movie, but I don’t remember him ever screaming. So I imagine that as soon as Jamie’s possessed stepmother, came flying towards him, waiting for him to scream. Jamie then picked up scissors, that was on a table near by, and used them to cut his tongue so that he would be unable to scream properly. And then he ran as fast as he could out of the house, doing all he could do to avoid his possessed stepmother, who’s possessed by the ghost of (Mary Shaw). I imagine by luck he found a car, that was in great working order, that’s one of his father’s, took one of them, and drove very fast away. I imagine eventually he came upon a church, stayed there for a few hours, told what had happened to him, to a nun, and then she called for a psychiatric ambulance. Later (Jamie Ashen) was taken to a Psychiatric Hospital, I imagine he was in there for five years, and then he left town. In order for (Jamie Ashen) to hatch a plan, to properly deal with his stepmother ELLA, who’s possessed by Mary Shaw’s ghost. I just really would like it, if either a sequel gets made of (DEAD SILENCE) movie, or a show series could get made of it.

This movie scared the shite out of me when it came out - I'm also oddly fond of it, since it's the first horror movie I watched with my (now) husband nearly 17 years ago. Memories.

I absolutely don’t care for the Saw series so I applaud James Wan for stepping outside his element in creating this underrated ventriloquist masterpiece material. 🎉
