The Killers Comment on The Man (Vevo 'Watch This')
The Killers grabbed rock by the shirt collar when they blasted outta Vegas in 2004 with the instantly impressive 'Hot Fuss.' Brandon Flowers' passionate vocals roared in front of the band's explosive moves, and "Mr. Brightside" came on like storm. Our 'Watch This' series has artists glance back at their most significant music videos, adding insightful commentary and key insights about the shoots themselves or the career impact of the videos at that time in their career. We invited The Killers in to chat it up a bit about some of their important vids, and Flowers and Ronnie Vannucci took some time to recall a few of their best-known titles. So far we've addressed "Mr. Brightside," "When You Were Young" and "Bones." Today, it's "The Man," from 2017's 'Wonderful Wonderful.' It's a portrait of Vegas macho, and Flowers says the vid is trying to explain "the fragility of the male ego." Stay close, we'll be sharing more 'Watch This' chats with Brandon and Ronnie soon.

Dude, that's the thing: he's a great actor, but he doesn't think he is. If you watch the Vevo Watch This video for "Mr. Brightside", he says he's not an actor-and he says it in a way that's trying to convey that he's not good. That couldn't be farther from the truth. I used to be an actor myself, and I worked in the film industry for years as everything from a production assistant to a screenwriter to a director. The man's got the chops. Just watch the music video for "Can't Deny My Love". I'd love to see him act in more stuff, whether that's in their own music videos or other stuff like films or TV shows. It's wasted potential otherwise.

Interesting. I've always read the video as being different points in time of the same man's life: He used to be a daredevil superstar who had a terrible accident, forcing him out of the business, so he turned to being a Vegas showman; but that was hardly successful, so he obsesses over what he used to have and can't get over it. Over time he makes increasingly poor decisions as he spirals while trying desperately to cling to being "the Man", but ends up kicked out and tossed aside in every instance, left only with himself and his choices.

Being from Las Vegas I felt like this video in some way reflected the dying breed of old Las Vegas, old skins, old characters, and old themes. Las Vegas is one of the greatest cities on earth, it had risen from empty dirt lots next to a rail road, to thriving vibrant community. Clark County has become a model for what major cities strive to be. This small metropolitan area of almost 2 million has seen major successes, although the price is losing our identity as a town and county. We have changed for the better, but underneath that change lies ruble and dirt cover what once was the great days of old Las Vegas and Downtown. This town has a story like no other and this video only shows me that these outdated ideas of Las Vegas are finally seeing the chopping block, as the ideas of modern design overtake the Las Vegas landscape and shape it into a new and different city. The old Las Vegas will forever remain in the memories of those who experienced it and with fade with new high rises and advancement in our entertainment industry. #LasVegasIsTheBestCityInTheWord #LoveTheKillers
