The "You are me" is a reversal to the "I'm you" he says to Mahito. Yuuji is telling Sukuna that behind all the "curse" mask, he is still a miserable dude afraid of death fighting against his fate just like him. I don't think Yuuji is offering Friendship nor Redemption to Sukuna but salvation in the shape of "Live a life watching the world you cursed and then die a proper death".

I think these moments, are when a writer utilizes his work to give out their philosophical thoughts to the audience. What i got from that is that to gege, we are all the same. We are all born to a world that will shape us into who we are, without much of our own agency until we are mostly formed as individuals. Therefore, empathy is the greatest weapon against the randomness and chance that is one’s destiny. Realizing that had we been given the same circumstances as someone else, we’d likely be no different to them. Gege cooked.

Whether we liked it or not, I think it makes sense that Yuji told Sukuna "you are me". Yuji in the last chapter said he could never empathize with the suffering or pain of other people. And that both having his Grandpa and experiencing suffering since the beginning of the series made him change his mind. Yuji would have been like Sukuna, completely unable to empathize with anyone given their strength since birth. Having someone by his side made the difference, caring for others made the difference. Logically it makes sense. Whether Gege made the landing or not is a different story xd.

I think the parallel is good but it just doesnt really hits the same, yuji was very strong since birth but he seemed to be a good person, even before his grandpa died, different from sukuna who was pure evil since birth. I loved that line. Seeing as sukuna was truly afraid of death, it’s ironic that the last thing he experienced in his life was being compared to the guy he hates the most. It’s kinda fitting for how terrible of a being he was.
@JG124_4 ай бұрын
I was gonna write something along these lines too, but it looks like I don’t need to, since you already stated it so well. I will mention that I think this reversal of what he said to Mahito also represents the evolution of his Yuji’s mindset. At the time of the Mahito fight, Yuji was still driven by his “cog” mentality, living solely for others and not himself, doing whatever it takes to kill curses just as Mahito killed people, even if that means dying. But I think the more recent chapters have shown an evolution in Yuji’s mentality. He no longer thinks of himself as a cog who’s only purpose is to live for others. He’s learned to live for himself while still loving others. And as you mention, Sukuna represents a twisted version of what Yuji could have been if his grandfather hadn’t instilled in him the value of love.

Off rip the "Yuta you fucker" scream gave me Gojo thoughts. Rika is a close second realizing her beloved kinda tricked her and died without her by his side
@wontonschannel4 ай бұрын
Rika definitely feels more accurate. She's shown herself to lash out and yell things when angry, and she would be fairly justified in her anger at Yuta since he essentially faked his death from her perspective. She was cradling his "dead" body and crying her face off - That would probably be insanely traumatizing for a cursed spirit with the mental age of an 11 year old. Gojo (iirc) was fine with the body swap plan, so the only real reason I can imagine him being mad at Yuta would be him getting pulled down from heaven away from his friends.

I think Yuji was trying to say that all people are the same. The fact Sukuna is human means he deserves love and acceptance, he, like all people, is a product of circumstances. If he had someone like Yuji's grandpa Sukuna may have turned out different. When he offers to accept Sukuna he's asking to use Sukunas power to help people, to live alongside them. Sukuna understood this and felt underestimated. He's no human he's a curse, and he'd rather die than help humans.

I think the “you are me,” is calling back to sukuna calling Yuji a weak insect meaninglessly clinging to life. In that moment that was exactly what sukuna was doing, he was desperate to maintain control over Megumi to prolong his life. I don’t think of it as an attempt to redeem but rather a reality check that in defeat sukuna is no better than the humans he looks down on

I real Yuji offering a Sukuna one last second chance is to stick to his guns and wins the philosophical battle between him and Sukuna. Showing mercy to Sukuna is Yuji trampling Sukuna's worldview one last time. If Yuji moved in to kill Sukuna, he'd have vindicated Sukuna's worldview in Sukuna's mind. By showing mercy, Yuji beat Sukuna both physically and philosophically. I read the Yuji telling Sukuna 'you are me' as 'we were both born abominations', Sukuna being a freak of nature and Yuji being Kenjaku's Frankenstein's Monster, but it was the life we lived that made the different. Sukuna was born an 'unwanted wretch' in his own terms, Yuji had his grandfather. And Yuji is pitying Sukuna for having no one. As least those are my reads on the whole thing.
@isauldron43374 ай бұрын
That's pretty much the gist

it sounds like a proper ending for a story and at the same time is so incredible unrealistic. the whole point about sukuna was that he used every little weakness, used every opportunity he got to slice what ever he wanted. since 1000yrs. specially as a curse. it would be way more plausible he would take yujis offer and wait until he is in the next crisis. like that it just feels really cheap and unrealistic. isnt it an integral part of curses to come back and not to win one fight but to withstand the temptation for the rest of life?
@Godzillawolf14 ай бұрын
@@itsmyboardwhotalk I respectfully disagree with that on one grounds: Sukuna would do that...if Yuji was unwilling to take him in and he had to force it. Yuji OFFERING it means that now Sukuna would OWE Yuji his life, and Sukuna UTTERLY DESPISES Yuji in every single definition of the word. To accept Yuji's offer is to validate everything Yuji stands for and invalidating everything Sukuna himself stands for. To accept Yuji's offer would be proving Yuji right, and it's like Batman not killing Joker: it's something Sukuna fundamentally WON'T do.
@itsmyboardwhotalk4 ай бұрын
@@Godzillawolf1 yeah got that, thats why I said its good for a story to end with, sounds good, seems a harmonic and fitting ending. but its soooooo unrealistic. lets take addiction as an real world example. how many times do you think addicted ppl create a perfect fitting story in why they are now strong and capable enough to achieve it this time. many fail that. and thats just "a normal curse". the king of curses should be aware of this human weakness, especially bc its clearly one characteristic sukuna showed before. in my opinion this is a fundamental problem with story telling and stories in general: it gets so dualistic. black and white. you say sukuna would validate everything yuji did if he takes the offer, story wise it makes sense, but in rl it wouldnt play out like that, otherwise we wouldnt need things like couples therapy. its just not possible to show one complete feelings in one action. again I understand the ending and story wise it makes sense but it ruins the authenticity of the characters gege build in my opinion. black and white. yes or no. but curses are not that clear and gege showed that so well... until now...
@Godzillawolf14 ай бұрын
@@itsmyboardwhotalk Thing is, Sukuna DOESN'T know his human weakness because he views himself as beyond it. And I'd argue it is realistic for exactly this reason: there ARE people in real life who are so dead set on sticking to their guns that they'll actively sabotage themselves, possibly to a fatal extent, because they don't want to admit they're wrong. Case in point: Hitler wanting to burn down Paris and refuse to quit until his capital was being invaded and choosing death over defeat (just like Sukuna), or Imperial Japan's absolute refusal to quit and borderline having a death cult. Saying 'it's unrealistic for someone to stick to their guns to the point of self-sabotage' isn't accurate, because people do that all the time in real life. Including preferring death over admitting they're wrong.

My interpretation of Yuji telling Sukuna, "You are me" is not to be a 1-to-1 with the mahito fight, but to express the idea of twins being one in the eyes of jujutsu while winking to the previous fight. It does come out of left field though, undoubtedly.

Am I crazy for saying Uraume’s ending is perfect? I say this as someone who loves Uraume. It makes sense for their character. They have no reason to go on now that Sukuna’s gone. And the way they said “you just got lucky” actually really fits. They’re right. They did get lucky. They didn’t win by surpassing Sukuna, they won with teamwork and a lot of luck. Also I like how Uraume died with a smile.

See I think when Yuji said that to Sukuna, I think he meant through cycles of rebirth. Like if they are both reborn in another time he’d want to try again as friends with him. I think this also goes back to what everyone says Gojo was trying to do. Gojo was trying to create a new cycle where there is one strong person standing alone, but a group of the strongest standing atop the lighting together. So I guess Yuji was hoping they could try again in another life born in the same age and try being friends.

SUKUNA You are me. When Yuji says I am you to mahito it’s him accepting that mahito was right he and Yuji are the same Cogs in a battle between two opposing sides When he says you are me. To Sukuna it’s Him telling Sukuna they are the same inspite of Sukuna Deniying it while Yuji accepts being a cog he also states that the things that made him this were the people around him and how the same thing could have happened to Sukuna he just didn’t have those people in his life. Yuji for the final time tries to Reach Sukuna but it’s way too late and Sukuna is like Yuji a cog of hatred on the other side but as Yuji accepts his possibility to be evil Sukuna forgoes the idea of ever being good

A really big distinction ive seen a lot of people overlook is the difference between Yuji telling mahito I am you, vs Yuji telling sukuna You are me. In the mahito fight he was admitting that he was the cog in a machine he thought he was and was going to continue killing curses as such. As opposed to him telling sukuna you are me, by this point in the story Yuji’s realized hes not just a cog in a machine and sukuna and he on paper are excessively similar. The key difference were the people that were there for Yuji to show him the value of life and others. Yuji, wanting to give him the chance he had never had attempts to teach him what no one had ever had ever tried to. Hence, the you are me. He’s not sukuna, sukuna is him……or at least thats my take

I kinda know what you mean about Sukuna, but you have to remember that really, he was just a parasite who needed a body as a host to live, so it makes sense he'd look something like this without a host. Maybe it wouldve felt less pitiful if it ended in the soul realm with him retaining his form, but I dont think its as bad as people are making it out to be. Plus, he stayed a true hater to the end.
