Fun Fact: "Louie Louie" was investigated by the FBI for possible obscenity in the lyrics. The allegation's were false. The nearly unintelligible lyrics were misinterpreted, and the song was banned from radio stations. "Louie Louie" is considered one of the most influential songs in Rock History.

I had forgotten about this song! I had attributed not understanding what he was saying to being from the U.K! It doesn't sound like they have an accent when they are singing but that's the reason many UK bands are hard to understand! After I watched this reaction I did a Google search of this band and found out they 're not from the UK but Portland Oregon! Much to my surprise!

Thanks JV for this song. You may recall this song was #3 on my OHW Top 50 list. What sets this song apart is exactly what you've discovered. The lyrics are indecipherable. And The Kingsman never published the lyrics. In fact it's speculated they were high and didn't even know what he was singing. Even today they are still debating the words. The words you showed on the internet are still just speculation. Hence this is one of the most famous songs ever. Great reaction JV! I'm cracking up with a huge smile on on my face.

No debate. Written and sung by Richard Berry. A Jamaican song, pretty much word for word. It’s funny because if you don’t know what he’s saying it sounds obscene. It was investigated and banned for dirty lyrics when there isn’t a dirty word in it. 😀

The definitive version of a garage rock classic. Because the words were almost unintelligible, J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI launched an obscenity investigation. Check out the Beach Boys' cover of the song from their first album (Surfin' Safari) for one of the few versions in which one can understand the words.

“Animal House” came out in August 1978. A month before I started college. You’ve no doubt seen it. This was the Toga Party song. So, suffice it to say, I went to many a Toga Party. We made our outfits from white bed sheets. They weren’t easy to find. Lots of alcohol consumed and that 8am English class was hard to make. Many times not made! Oh man. What a crazy time. I heard a funny interview on Coast to Coast Am with a band member. He mentions why the song came out like it did. The lead singer had just had his braces removed. The rented studio microphone was way up high. They weren’t allowed to adjust the controls. They had read the music sheet only once. The lyrics are in somewhat broken english... This cover song was played as competition in a radio “which is the worst song contest”. It won so many times that people started enjoying it.

A few years ago this song struck my curiosity so I did a little investigation. This is originally a Caribbean song written by Richard Berry in 1955 (and based on an older Afro Cuban song named, 'El Loco Cha Cha'). The song echoes Jamaican speech patterns and references Jamaica. Here are the lyrics: Louie, Louie, me gotta go Louie, Louie, me gotta go Fine little girl she waits for me Me catch the ship for cross the sea I sail the ship all alone I never think me make it home Louie, Louie, oh, me gotta go Louie, Louie, me gotta go Three nights and days me sail the sea Me think of girl constantly On the ship I dream she there I smell the rose in her hair Louie, Louie, me gotta go Louie, Louie, me gotta go Me see Jamaica moon above It won't be long, me see my love Me take her in my arms and then I tell her I never leave again Louie, Louie, oh, me gotta go Louie, Louie, me gotta go I say, me gotta go I say, me gotta go

In 1985 there was a campaign to make this the Washington State Anthem/song. While unsuccessful, the Washington State senate did pass Floor Resolution 37, which declared April 12th 1985 to be “Louie Louie Day” in the state of Washington. The song is still considered the unofficial “other” state song. What an opportunity we missed out here in the PNW! Cheers!

As disc jockeys sometimes say a blast from the past. I remember this song in my high school days. My school was incredibly successful at basketball all kinds of state championships. Sometime during a basketball game the band would play this and the whole Arena would just yell. Our opponents never liked it when the band played that song because the whole Arena just went crazy. Good Times. The words didn't make any sense. As it said on Bandstand it had a good beat and you can dance to it. Good times, good times.😂😁💃🕺🎼🎵🎶🎸

When I was a little kid we had this 45 and I much preferred the flipside instrumental, "Haunted Castle." As for "Louie Louie", everybody thought it had dirty lyrics and that was why the singer was mumbling them like that.

From Wikipedia: The song is based on the tune "El Loco Cha Cha" popularized by bandleader René Touzet and is an example of Latin influence on American popular music. "Louie Louie" tells, in simple verse-chorus form, the first-person story of a Jamaican sailor returning to the island to see his lover. * * * From LyricFind: Louie Louie, oh no, you take me where ya gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby Louie Louie, oh baby, take me where ya gotta go A fine little girl, she waits for me Me catch the ship across the sea Me sailed the ship all alone Me never think I'll make it home Louie Louie, oh no no no, me gotta go, oh no Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go Three nights and days I sailed the sea Me think of girl constantly On the ship, I dream she there I smell the rose in her hair Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go Okay, let's give it to 'em right now Me see Me see Jamaica, the moon above It won't be long me see me love Me take her in my arms and then I tell her I'll never leave again Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go I said me gotta go now Let's hustle on out of here Let's go

You have me in stitches, you're hilarious. It's a good thing! Honestly I never knew the words to this song either, even after reading them I think that was Scot or Welsh talk...if there ever was such! Anyway, it reminds me of the summer and swimming at the local pool.

This song was originally recorded by Richard Berry in 1957, He ended up selling the rights to fund his wedding. the reason he is mumbling was that the studio they were recording in was thrown together last minute and, at the time, the lead singer was wearing braces.

The lyrics were considered lewd and obscene. It was the way he slurred his words. It was a major buzz. Even though I was in high school I never saw the video. Had no idea what they looked like. This is a classic

Back in the day they would say" I like the beat and its easy to dance to." The thing about the Group Funkadelic / Parliament etc we didn't listen for meaning, but a beat we could lose ourselves in and there was something rejuvenating about dancing till you got lost in an BAD Beat and the words and shows/costumes/props were down right hilarious.
