In 1964 I was 9 I mowed a big lawn for 2 dollars and spent 1.75 on the my first 45 record. The Kinks. You really got me. When it played on the radio I remember my mom cranking it up for me in our '60 Olds. Great times.

If you spent 1.75 on a 45 you got robbed, back then they were .49 cents or 3 for a dollar.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of these mini-documentaries. Please keep them coming! They are WONDERFUL! They don't take too much time, they get right to the meat of the song, and the move right along.....it's like 5 minutes of great information. Thank you!

The Kinks were not the first punks, but they were one of the pioneers. The Trashmen, The Kingsmen, The Small Faces were also in that group of pioneers.

The Pipeline from Soul Music to Heavy Rock is quite remarkable. The groovy nature of this riff has its origins in Afro-Cuban rhythms, as much of Soul music does. (So does Satisfaction, listen to those 1-2-3 cha cha cha drums) In this case, the songs traces its roots to Richard Berry’s Louie Louie, an R&B song based heavily on El Loco Cha Cha. The rhythm is in fact Afro-Cuban. Of course the Kingsmen recorded a raucous garage cover, The Kinks built You Really Got Me on Louie Louie IV and V chords and to a lesser degree the pronunciation of the Chorus on the lyrics “Louie Louie.” This song and other follow up songs like All Day and All the Night had a direct impact on The Who with songs like Can’t Explain. That groove stays intact through 60s and is heard in Black Sabbath’s early work. Anyway, I think it’s incredibly fair to say that 60s rock’s biggest influence was NOT 50s Rock and roll, but then-contemporary soul music to an almost mind-boggling degree.

They were always interviewing Pete Quaife because he was considered the handsome one and he was probably like, "Oi, I play de bass and I don't write any of the songs." I'm so impressed with Metallica here because that version of "You Really Got Me" sounds more like the Kinks original record than the Kinks record so props for that. Wow! And Dave is absolutely one of the best when it comes to guitarists.

That’s Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. He is the presentator of top 2000. This show started in 1999 with the top 2000. The whole day on the radio, and every evening on t.v. The last show on 31 dec. In the tv show Leo Blokhuis, the left guy, told stories about some songs It became a tradition. Through the years the stories grow into this. And all funded by the public broadcasting. Tax money well spend on this videos. For the show people can vote fore their favorite. And most of the time number 1 is bohemian rhapsody. For me the show is boring, but I always loved the stories of Leo. He knows ridiculous much about this topic. I’m so glad he is on KZbin now.

This video is just the tip of the iceberg, there's a lot more to the story. Ray wrote the song on piano, and may have had to explain what "staccato chords" meant to his brother. No matter, the song is such ancient history for him now. Ironic to see video of Ray in the studio with Metallica; it was Van Halen's first big hit and many people associate the song with them. At the time, Metallica was pretty much an underground band that, like Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath said, was "in it for the volume."

oh the kinks, i didn't know them back in the day so when they came round to my house back in 1992 i think it was to buy my Amiga 1200 of me and mentioned who they were i didn't even ask them anything, i had just never heard of them, and they left after hearing a god awful musical arrangement i made on the Amiga i bet they laughed their asses off after, wish i had knew who they were back then

It's Dave on the record. Jimmy has said many, many times that he did not play that solo or anywhere else on the track. It is purely the work of Dave Davies. Page may have played some rhythm on a few Kinks songs, but this was not one of them.
