In an interview I saw with Tammy Wynette in her final years she said she had no idea what she was singing about or what she was doing but she wanted to be a part of it and lived every minute saying it was one of the best things she ever did ! And that she was the envy of a lot of the country stars who though like her it was brilliant! Thanks to the genius of the KLF

Heehee ok I can’t be the only one who was a total dirtbag at this time? 😂 I mean we were gorgeous and brilliant and amazing (I did get my MA & was a lesbian avenger back then) but there were also a lot of drug deals in dirty club bathrooms, a spot of alcoholism, someone who lived in a weird startup thrift store or a punk flophouse, way too much ooo la la with strangers, oh good lord I used to distribute condoms & dental dams in bars - casual sex, & I hated going with people to buy coke, it was so scary! Never tried it, but god knows I was always somewhere I shouldn’t be… I mean I drink three times a year now, smoke weed legally & that’s it but I remember a bunch of us on the dance floor also being really kind of trashy… please tell me I’m not the only one! (Also I’m now realizing I knew several hustlers & the thrift store was probably also a front for money laundering, I was seriously always the country bumpkin in the middle of shenanigans & was so clueless nobody worried about me telling cuz I really didn’t notice some serious crime around me…I also learned recently that I participated in a drug trafficking ring without knowing a thing, so hopefully I actually am an outlier lol)

I enjoyed this song in my teens, but listening to it again in middle age I realise what a remarkable work of fusion music it is; that incredible, repeating guitar hook; the Africanised chants; the hip-hop elements; and all overlaid with country guitar and Tammy Wynette's vocals. Jesus Christ, what mad genius came up with this?

Bobby Tate Hi, my friend, I just had to comment upon your own comment. I recall this song from the 1990's, but never before saw the video until today (I tend to procrastinate, lol). But I was struck by the fusion and mix of styles as well, and when you made mention of Jesus Christ, take note of the wicker man burning at 1:18. I was immediately reminded of the 1973 "Wicker Man" film wherein Edward Woodward screams out, "Oh, Jesus Christ!" Hope this tiny tid-bit adds to the fun of this clip!

The crowd exploded, people were going mental. most of the people were not even born when this first came out but they were like in a trance..Thank you KLF for the music, a true classic.

There is an interview with her somewhere on KZbin where she tells the story of how it happened. The face she pulls when she explains that someone called her to be in the song and videoclip singing the main lyrics of a Eurodance-act song, and she said "Are you sure you have the correct number?" :P (Also interesting to know that she had not been the first choice when it came to the artist, and that the KLF came to her was merely because their first artist of choice refused the request, but can't remember who it was).

Having Miss Tammy Wynette is wonderful in so many ways. "Stand by your man" is one of my karaoke songs. Love her.

From everything I've heard, there was a hell of lot of legit love and respect involved in them asking her. Reportedly, she didn't quite "get" the final product (who did?), but did recognize the tour-de-force of skill on display and had a good time doing it.

@@travcollier Apparently she couldn't sing it the way the KLF wanted her to and they had to rework the song around her vocals.

But it was a "mistake" as it was mix-up , it was Dolly Parton they where thinking of :-)

"we were in the studio, and the track just wasn't working out, and Jimmy half jokingly says to me 'What this track needs is Tammy Wynette' and I went into the little room at the side, there's a phone in there.... and within three calls I was talking with Tammy Wynette... and we're playing the track down the phone to her, and she said 'Yes, I'll do it' "
