This cover reminds me of the talent show version of this song in the movie, when Guy first decides to count it in fast. It's a similar tempo and the garage rock sound of this version kinda matches the sloppiness of the first performance (and I mean that in a good way, that's my favorite version of the song in the movie and this is my favorite cover of it).

Musically, this song absolutely crushes. Vocally, it seems like this song is at the top of Doug's vocal range and it shows. You can tell he falls flat trying to hit most of those high notes. Still, overall it's a solid cover IMO.

It wasn't. The Knack recorded it (badly) in1998, two years after the film and "The Wonders'" original recording of it. Don't believe the idiots on this site who say different.

@@scottt5484Can't you hear how bloody awful this record is and what a rip off of the original it is. They copied it exactly except that the lead singer can't sing.. Listen to the original and the excellent vocals on it and you'll know what I'm talking about.

@@Glicksman1 is there something wrong with you? They are doing a COVER version and playing it pretty true to the original. When covering another bands song, some choose to rework it completely (Johnny Cash doing NIN Hurt) or play it straight…and everything in between. There’s no crime in that and Fieger’s vocals are just fine. Like I said, good cover for them. Right up their alley albeit a little sugary for them.

@@scottt5484Alright, I usually do not reply to rude, ad hominin comments like yours, but I will make an exception here, which I have a feeling I may come to regret. For the record, I hold that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and concerning that right, we are all equal, even me. However, I also hold that not all opinions are equal. Some are poorly written, some do not address the subject clearly or at all, some display some degree of ignorance regarding the subject, and some are, in part or in whole, simply incorrect in what they assert. That your comment is rude is not merely my opinion, it is a fact. Unless you were sincerely asking about my health, which I doubt, and in which instance you might better have put it more politely and civilly, you deliberately intended to be insulting to me. Have I done or written something so heinous as to deserve this kind of public disrespect from you? I think not. So, to the matter. You apparently do not agree with my assessment of The Knacks’ rip-off recording of Fountain of Wayne’s (The Wonders’) excellent original recording. You are, as I said, entitled to so disagree. However, if you must do so, may I respectfully ask that you do so without beginning such with “Is there something wrong with you?” Respecting and exercising politeness to each other, we may enter into an interesting dialogue about this or another song, and/or about music in general, which I assume is a topic that you are interested in, as am I. So, perhaps we may begin anew. I have your opinion, and in another post, as this one is too long as it is, I may reply with my understanding and opinions about what I think a good cover is and what it is not, which may (or may not) be of interest to you and to others here who may read it. Can we be friends, then? Cheers

Disagree with all the critics. This was a straight to 2-Track Garage Cover of a favorite song. Has all the edge this song would've sounded like the first time The Wonders recorded it. Luv the original but doin' it live should have some "fluctuations". Adam would be proud.

That is pure BS. See my comment above. Adam Schlesinger (RIP), who wrote it in 1996, was a child in the '70s. (addressing no one in particular: Where do all these deluded people come from?)

Just listened to this crap again. Not only is it a complete ripoff of the original without even the smallest re-imagining, it's not nearly as good. There are many covers of this song, all of the one's I've heard are better than this. Horrible lead vocal that doesn't reach the high notes. Overall an amateurish production, thin and hash. Just a hot, wet mess, clearly intended to cash in on Adam's (RIP) and The Fountains of Wayne's excellent creation and recording. This deserved to fail.

@@Galahad1967 Well, I feel no thicker than usual. However, you ought be feeling a bit silly. Unless you have found a way to manipulate time and re-define both Classical (often called "Newtonian"), as well as Modern (Planck/Einsteinian) Physics, it is not yet possible for The Knack's poor 1998 recording of this song to have been the original of Fountains of Wayne's ("The Wonders") song from 1996. As for it being recorded in the '70s by The Knack, their first album (and first recording) "Get The Knack" was recorded in 1978 and (I'm looking at my old, worn copy of the album) nope, "That Thing You Do" is just not on it. Actually, it couldn't be because it wasn't written until 1996 by Adam Schlesinger (RIP), the bassist of Fountains of Wayne. Adam was born on October 31, 1967, which would make him eleven when the Knack's 1978 record was made. Adam was a genius songwriter, but he was not so precocious as a child as to be able to write that or any song then, nor did he manage to alter the Space/Time Continuum in the way that you think that you did. Thanks for asking about me, though. I'm fine.
