The only issue about it is that this particular prayer to St. Michale the Archangel was written (or "composed") in the late 19th century by the pope Leo XIII. There's a discussion under the original vid: is he the Archangel himself or a "spirit of chivalry" summoned by the prayer. In the movie, the miniature icon of St. Michael disappears, and the knight comes out of the mist, then - after the fight - he gives the strap with the icon back to the lady, and is gone. That's a nice & intriguing ambiguity, right there.

The hearing is also impeded, but again, not as much as with other helmets. But without a doubt the biggest advantage over other helmets, would be your ability to breath freely.

@@valentinmitterbauer4196 I'm no armour expert but When I originally watched this it seemed a bit odd to me as well (having said that its a brilliant choice from a narrative perspective because you can see only his stern features within making the character mysterious but also revealing enough to show he's determined and ruthless [also when he spits/retches]). I possibly would've believed the barbute had it had a full face visor on it which heavier variants do as that also would've reduced the risk of being hit in the eyes. A sallet-bevor helmet may have looked more historically authentic although they claimed this is a fantasy short so I suppose it doesn't really matter. The real reason I suspect this helmet was used though is because I think its the heaviest helmet they have! It's used in other Adorea videos as well!!

Yes, it was period accurate, and quite an impressive fight scene. But I think the producers of the film were trying to send a different message. The Knight is a supernatural heavenly avenging angel. The title "Knight of Hope " the woman in the film is obviously held hostage. She appears to have been beaten and abused, in horrific ways. She manages to escape, only to be chased down, and then surrounded by her captors/tormentors. She prays for deliverance, and magically a "Champion " appears and saves her. He comes out of nowhere, in a mystical white light, he appears practically invincible. He even stops to kneel, and possibly praying himself. Then he reaches down and returns the woman's religious charm, and vanishes. She was rescued through her faith and devotion.

I chatted with one of the really experienced swordsmen, such "elders" who were active in historical fencing/martial arts in former Czechoslovakia in 80s, acted as a stuntman in historical movies at the time etc., of course a member of an established HEMA/reenactment group. He mentioned an interesting point, that a couple of times, they offered an advisory to producers of historical movies/series with a decent budget, actually even for free, but the approach of the producers was like "thanks, but we have our men, let's not complicate this.." Quite often producers go 'easy way', focusing general public and don't necessarily listen even to advisors they paid. The same goes for sci-fi and physics, action, explosions and so on. There are many cases, that advisor correctly suggested something, director said no, let's do this unrealistic crap instead, people will like it or won't notice... and for majority, it actually worked. The other moral issue for the bandits would also need to consider... What is a knight doing in alone in the middle of the forest? Where are his squires? Are there other knights? Soldiers they might be leading? How long do we want to be fighting this guy is five more show up? Mounted?

In regards to your question about Bandits being afraid of fighting knights, depends on where you are and which period of the middle ages. In the UK most brigands were actually knights who could not support themselves otherwise. Lesser sons of nobleman and all that. One particular band of brigands after being caught they atoned for their sins by joining Henry the something army and going on crusade. And when they came back, they were set up as Bailifs!?! So it depends on where you are.

The failed attempt at penetrating the mail armour reminds me of training body micro-movements to deflect knife thrusts and cuts. It requires the ability to avoid excess tension and rigidity, which an experienced knight would probably have.

As some one who has fought with steel weapons and against guys in full armour, I think that the best thing the bandits could do is throw rocks at his helmet and hope to daze or concuss him. Of course I would want to be on the top of the cliff to do this, not within easy sword distance.

The longsword fight duel was awesome! My favorite too. The sword and shield fight between the viking-like warriors was great too. In this I really appreciate that the show the fact that; yes, armor indeed DOES protect the warrior. It's not like movie when a fighter in full plate will be killed by getting slashed against the belly, covered in full plate, and it somehow slashes them open. Watching movies you'd think you'd be better off not wearing armor at all. I mean the armor is so heavy they can hardly movie right? (Wrong I watched a guy in full plate doing cartwheels and somersaults in it) and it doesn't really give much protection. Again wrong, it's like a walking tank.

The smiling helmet at 6:23 cracked me up. What the hell is that? Also can someone explain the purpose of the circle nipple-plates on the top of the arms of the knight? Are they supposed to protect the armpits? Also commenting on the style of the helmet - even for me, who doesn't know much about medieval armor, it also stuck out a bit from the rest of his equipment. However I believe it's a nice compromise between effectivness and the ability to see the knight's face at all times. It is a movie after all, so you want to see people act and seeing his expression certainly adds to that.
@eutenhomuitosnomes54855 жыл бұрын
The smilling helmet is a 16th century cuirassier helmet, the circle plates (Rondels) do indeed protect the armpits.

The Barbuta was not necessarily unrealistic. There were tons of them, with hundreds of different shapes, but it was more an helmet for a city militia than for a knight. However a knight that knew he would have fought on foot could have chosen it voluntarily, because a visored helmet would have impaired his vision and breath too much.
@tomsavage85143 жыл бұрын
the knight is also supposed to be some kind of patron saint sent by heaven, so that also would explain his ability. or another interpretation is that it's all a fantasy happening in her mind, after she hit her head falling down.

many people dehumanize actual murder , in modern time you pull a trigger with the crosshair at some blob you might even convince yourself that it is not human. In melee it is not simple men cry gurgle with blood, scream and your list of enemies is joined by your own conciusness. Newer underestimate the challange and mental weight of taking a life.

I think one of the key factors, alluded to here, is that the knight knows what killing a man feels like. Most of the brigands have probably never killed someone and it is not an easy thing to do for the first time. Rapes and bar brawls don't really gear you up to be a killer.

I think it's interesting how they gave this a whole fantasy basis while also making everything as realistic as possible. The first time i watched it, I thought it was just a nice well put together short story. Then I watched it a second time and realized the woman's medallion IS the knight. I was so confused how he gave it back to her after the fight and only then saw that, it disappeared from her hands, seconds before the knight came through the fog and light.

Not only is the fighting great, with working armour and PLAUSIBLE overcoming of it by targeting the vulnerability on the backside of the legs, but also the camera work is superb and better than in a lot of big-budget Hollywood movies. I like in particular the pacing and perspectives. It's fast-paced action, you have the feeling you're right there and you can actually follow the action, unlike the shitty shaky cam and jump cuts that are used so often in Hollywood (because they try to imitate the Bourne Identity, but don't understand how and why it worked there)

Verd ori'shya beskar'gam. "A warrior is more than his armor". The knight's armor is impressive but his training and willingness to fight is what really shines. Also, I like how it shows the armor isn't just passive protection. The knight maneuvers himself to get the use out of his armor.

I like the video but four things stood out. The helm, the lack of coif protecting under the chin and back of the neck, no voiders down the arms and no chausers on the back of the legs as these would help to prevent most of the knights wounds

i live close ish to a place where they do full armor HEMA i saw a bout and went around after talking to some of the knights and let me tell you these guys are freight trains muscles for days (people thinking muscle makes you slow is like saying that a car is slow because its got a big engine) they are also quite tactically smart the ones who have been doing it for a while are very well versed in the finer points of combat and the strengths and limits of their armor, i fully believe one of them in armor with years of training and battlefield experience could pull this off against average thugs like depicted. just like a Navy seal with his full gear could possibly take on the same number of gang bangers (that would be more of a running gun battle as he would have to keep falling back from cover to cover and not get surrounded but once again possible)
@13thcentury5 жыл бұрын
Got to see this. As for knights reputation. Totally. People forget that knights were not just soldiers, but ran things. The average villein would have been very familiar with them. Warminster alone had about 5 manors with knights residing. Each will full compliment of staff. Each held different positions in the town. Those bandits must have been utterly crapping their braies.
@Mason-zp8yb5 жыл бұрын
The only thing I could think of that could kill the knight is a ballista with a heavy steel tipped bolt. Although of course these brigands can't get their hands on that.

I think they actually admitted about the helmet that it was an entirely stylistic choice on their part. They did not wanted for their knight to be a faceless and un-emotionial giant, but they also did not wanted to have him fight bareheaded or with his face undefended. It's a really smart artistic choice as the knight's head and face end up protected, yet open enough for the actor to show his emotions, and any attempt at stabbing his face would be the same deal as trying to pierce any other weak point, so, just another cool scene to shoot. It's a case of how sometimes adding a bit of an artistic style isn't detrimental to the show itself.

Great Video again and thanks for pointing the great channel! Just one addition or correction: Bandits, to my knowledge, would have combat experience. I'm not sure about the medieval period, but I guess it transfers from later periods, bandits tend to be ex soldiers. Leftovers from the last war, often recruited young, no place to return to, used to violence, pillaging etc., now without leadership
@KAjo07 Жыл бұрын
I would choose dagger for this scenario as a knight because fighting multiple enemies without armor you can get pretty close as a tank and stab them fast without tiring too fast and it is extremely effective even if they try to disarm you or hold your arm

This is a bit off topic but wasn't sure where to ask so here it is.The history channel has a contest with knights,(people wearing knight armor),do you think that may have been the way knights fought or is it just basically rough housing and banging each other over the heads with swords and maces?
