I think sentence cards are better in any case because at the end of the day you learn through immersion and not anki. Both provide enough exposure to help you remember the target word faster. But sentence cards have one main advantage: you don’t associate words with definitions but concepts in your mind, this allow us not only to acquire words faster since you can associate the different meaning that you learn through immersion with much more ease but also to ease the stress cause on the long term by repping thanks to this lack of association with a definition. A little bit of “hint” while repping is absolutely no problem once you acquired the target word.

I'm using a mix of both With sentence cards I found myself not reading the kanji the word is written in. I would just remember the sentence, context and the pronunciation of the word, but not the kanji making it up. I recently changed my sentence cards to have the word on top, then some blank lines, and then the sentence. That way I first glance on the word by itself. That little change helped me out immensely.

My problem with sentence cards (I know, wrong video but I wanted to mention it): Lets say I have the sentence "WiiU版はやったことないので実況うれしいです" and my target word is 実況... When reviewing I see the first word and instantly know "Oh, WiiU版... I only have one card with that beginning". So I solve the card correctly without ever looking at the target word. Vocabulary cards don't have this problem.

I have the same problem, it becomes a little memory puzzle at this point.

You could just "convert" your sentence cards to vocab cards after a certain time(for me, when the interval is over 1.5 months), or you could directly make it vocab first, target word + hidden sentence on the front(hover to see in case you still need more context), meaning, audio, image or whatever on the back. Converting them will technically makes your reviews shorter and still effective.

I just started making vocab cards because I had this exact problem when going through the Tango decks. I'm guessing it becomes less of an issue once you have many thousands of cards but I still wish we had some way of having multiple random example sentences for each one even if they couldn't all be i+1

@@Takobocchi morphman would have fixed your issue I think, but it's too buggy now(?), does migaku extension have similar features?

I'll give a unique perspective. Currently learning German, and I only do vocabulary cards with English translations. I also go both directions, G to E and E to G. I average about 60 new cards a day, so 30 words. My Mature card retention rate is 87%. I average about 3.6 sec/card - I try to blitz them out as fast as I can. I do about 450 reviews in 29 minutes. This probably wouldn't work for Japanese, but for a western European language it works extremely well. I think Yoga has said something similar for European languages before, that vocab cards are pretty much all you need, since there is almost always a direct translation for the word in English, which isn't always the case in Japanese.

Hello My dear Migaku guys. I had a little question around your addons and patreon. I want to be patreon for one month, but I can´t afford two months in a row. So I was concerned if when I stopped being Patreon I would no longer be able to use the addons. Thx very much for your attention and your work and sorry for possible mistakes or unnatural things in my drafting. Cheers
