My late father was recalled along with many from the Middle East in WW2 to help defend Papua New Guinea. Dad was in the heavy anti-aircraft units which were the one’s bombarding the crap out of the Japanese. Many years after the war had ended, dad met several of those foot soldiers who’d fought on Kokoda Track. They told how the heavy artillery flew over their heads, absolutely decimating the Japanese.War was hell for all of our boys up there, well anywhere in the theatre of WW2. Thank God my dad, his 4 brothers all came home. Lest We Forget.🙏🏻🇦🇺😢

How does Vietnam fit into the mix hmm? Not so well me thinks! And I don't even know how you'd classify the Iraq and Afghani wars. Barely a pass? Maybe better than before?

@@danstewart4821 Yeah, I mean, I'm not complaining, the lucky country and all but I know a very close family friend who went to Vietnam. He has PTSD and was exposed to Agent Orange. He's endured a lifetime of both physical and psychological pain. He is the nicest, most welcoming and liberal/accepting person you'll ever meet, you'd never know the suffering he's endured just to abate some 1960s old, rich mans anxiety about the Red Threat (I know it was a little more complicated than that, but essentially, that's how most of the politicians got their war, out of public fear). Whilst I don't think anyone would discredit the fighting ability of our ANZACs, I do think we need to be cautious about over-inflating our appreciation for their efforts by thinking you can't still criticise some of the needless, pointless wars they suffered in.

I've never understood why the Japanese simply didn't assault Port Moresby directly rather than undertake this ridiculous overland trek. And...they obviously never learned, they did it all over again in 1944 when they marched through Burma to attack Imphal, India. The troops simply starved to death.
