A somber yet heoric end to the story. As it should be for the Death Korps. I do like how ambiguous it is. It's not confirmed he died he, just that our Krieger charged, flamer in hand towards the Orks with his brothers. And the image slowly losing its color and becoming black and white, save for that one bright pink petal, was a beautiful way to convey the light surrounded by darkness within this story.

“When deploying Kriegsman alongside other regiments of the imperial guard, there are many factors to consider. First, the kriegsmen hold many traditions that other guard regiments find strange and alien. The krieg cult of sacrifice, their quartermasters, their stubborn refusal to remove their masks in the presence of those they consider strangers or outsiders, and the revered status of not just the dead, but of death itself is a morbid thing for many in the guard. The kriegsmen culture and reputation are another issue for those outside the korps. The Death Korps are considered bad omens on the battlefield for those who know of them, and in some ways they are right. The Korps are frequently deployed, nay, request deployment to some of the most hostile and dangerous environments in the world. The Death Korps’ presence on the field therefore means the danger of the battlefield and the casualties of other regiments deployed alongside them are most likely to be heavy. This increases hostility towards them, and reputations of “dead men walking” and being more “servitor than man” abound. The Death Korps in turn view most other regiments as soft and weak, having neither the grit, nor, more importantly, the discipline to hold a candle to the vaunted men of the Korps. The Korps are not fond of ratlings, as their tendency for thieving, racketeering and other less than ideal activities are considered an affront to the Krieg way of life and culture. Many cases of thefts being met with swift and summary executions by furious Korpsmen or quartermasters are recorded. The Kriegsmen view an attack or slight on a Kriegsmen as an attack on the Korps and they defend their traditions and their own fiercely. An example that comes to mind from my own experience was that of the Precidian incident, early in my career, in which the 83rd Vresh grenadiers insulted and assaulted members of the 624th Korps line infantry during billeting for the upcoming campaign, tearing of a piece of the regimental colours. To prevent conflict the Korps were ordered by the commissariat not to fire on their fellow guardsmen. In response they stormed the grenadiers camp with shovels and trench clubs in order to recover their colours. The ensuing melee resulted in 31 members of the grenadiers killed through blunt force trauma and cracked skulls. Dozens more were injured. The Regiments officers then presented themselves to high command for punishment and execution either by direct fire or by forlorn hope assault. It was decided that the Korps were to be punished, by deployment to the rear lines of the campaign, a choice that was met with great anguish. Finally communication itself can be a marked problem. The kriegmen’s speech is muffled by their masks, and combined with their masks covering their faces and expressions make them unreadable for most, and hard to differentiate between them. The other way of communication between Kriegers, Kriegspiel, is a distant descendant of the battlemark sign language used by the most honourable silent sisterhood. This, combined with the clipped and brusque way of conversation Kriegsmen have lead to many having difficulty communicating with them.” - Excerpt from “Men of Krieg, an officer’s guide” penned by Lord Militant General Fulk van Gelderhest in an effort to help future officers lead and understand their new troops, now given to many new officers or commissars as essential reading.

I do definitely like that sentence a lot, and it feels like 40k a bit more from the stuff I’ve seen (though i’m super knowledgeable in 40k) But that said I like the ambiguousness of the ending, having it end with him just kind of dying would feel a little to grim dark (and yes I know that this is 40k we’re talking about, but I don’t think that would have worked as well for this specific story.) but I also think just having survive the battle would be going to far in the other direction, as a happy ending also wouldn’t fit the story. So instead it seems like the writer made both options irrelevant and instead made the victory of the story be entirely about the flower, which makes the life or death of the main character no longer matter. Actually showing him living or dying would have distracted from that in my personal opinion, but I’d totally get why people would disagree.
@technology259810 ай бұрын
A person starved of kindness would do anything for even a shred of it once they know of it. Beyond it all, this story goes to show that there is still people buried beneath the defeatism and self-imposed repentance that the Krieg have, which makes them all the more human and just how powerful the smallest yet kindest of gestures can have on a person, given the effect that it has on the Krieger.

Actually the clones have something unique. Their close bond as brothers. They never leave a man behind, they are all willing to do their duty and die if need be. At the start of the war they all looked the same, by the end of it they were all unique individuals yet held together by their bond as brothers. No sith or Jedi could ever match that. Mandalorians maybe as they follow their creeds and traditions almost fanaticaly but clones are as close to a hive mind one can come.

Many Kriegsmen only see their duty as repentance for a generation of sin. But there are those, like 1491, whom see what their duty truly means for the imperium. A duty to protect the fragile lives that are under imperial rule. Many Kriegsmen are seen with fear, and they do not pay them heed. But for those who are greeted a smile and a thank you, it does put into perspective for them why they do what they do. They are God Emperor's bayonets, fixed up on the laz rifle, that keep the daemons, the Xenos, and the mutants away from *his* citizen. And I salute you! o7

I had hoped that the Kriegsman got a vision of The Emperor forgiving him for the sins of his people. That he survived and that he ended up with the flower girl with a happy life. It would be a great story for the new Warhammer series in the workd

I’ve never been all that into 40k, I’ve always thought that the ideas and universe are fun in a lot of ways, especially with how over the top awful that universe is to live in, but I’ve never seen much humanity in it. I’m sure it’s there in the books and lore, but none of the surface level stuff really showed that to me enough to get me interested. So seeing a story that uses such an outrageously grim dark setting to tell a story that doesn’t itself feel grim dark, but instead feels beautifully human really hits home. I think that this was beautiful.
