He's calling out everyone and everything with the the lyrics, and I love it. Really poking at society like "yes, you have freedom but what are you doing with it? Being horrible to each other?" And pointing out how people pressure and shame others and shackle them to conform. The video is amazing too, I just love the look. I tend to like real sets rather than studio sets. Anyway, thanks for the reaction, I was prepared to wait longer considering the circumstances. It puts the lyrics into perspective, "freedom of expression could be reason for somebody's death." Just because a person can say something, should they?

that's what yoongi did too... he's not merely "criticizing" the world. it's coming from introspection. it's his own greed and conflicting emotions that make him ponder on these things, which ties up to societal issues... and that makes his thoughts truly relatable. tbh, it's tough. i still remember the amazement i felt when daechwita dropped. i especially love korean traditional aesthetics too. but, i prefer this song. the lyrics really get me. and the mv is just exactly what i want! that grit and rawness to it, i'm obsessed. i've seen it several times but i can't get enough. i want it to be an actual 2-hour movie. hahaha

I personally love Haegum as a song more than Daechwita. Although Daechwita is very louder and I would say more experimental with the use of Korean instruments, I really think Haegum is just the one for me. The bass and beat is so addicting. D-Day as a whole album is so amazing and I cannot wait for your reaction to it and all the songs he curated for this piece. D-Day is meant to be the final installment in this AgustD triology, but Yoongi said it doesn't necessarily mean AgustD is gone for good. So we might get another AgustD album in the future or we might never and he'll just release under the name Suga from now on. All that will depend on Yoongi's own artistic decisions which I think is so cool of him. You'll definitely get a new perspective of this whole story when you watch AMYGDALA as it's supposed to be the final part of this journey. But as like everyone has been saying it is VERY dark and is age restricted for its heavy themes that he touches upon. I hope you can watch it when you feel ready but if you think in a way it can help you to heal then it's up to you. I know when I watched it although some stuff was triggering for me, I still was able to use it as a part of my ongoing healing process from trauma since I was able to SEE one of my favorite artists express exactly what I had gone through.

Suga is such a spiritual person. He so introspective. So deep sometimes that he seems tortured much like many of the great artists over the years. It seems like a heavy burden to carry but he seems to compensate and control these feelings by creating a way to help himself along with others through his music. This needs to be said. So many people are lost and toxic and place their disfunctional burdens and thoughts on others causing depression and destructive behaviors. This goes along with bullying others with negative comments. It can have devastating consequences. Love is much more powerful and moving than hate, so let share love instead and build each other up. The world would be a better place in unity of love.

I thought the same thing, the mv reminds me of a Wong Kar Wai film in how it's shot. Haeguem, story wise, feels like a sequel to Daechwita to me(the sword in the background of Thief Yoongis' lair, the dragon motifs on his bomber jacket reflect back to the same dragon and sword in Daechwita). The everyday "Man of the people" Yoongi who killed the Mad King/mad self became the Police Chief, who in turn also became as corrupted as the king he killed. The scars around the eye of three of the Yoongis I guess hints at the propensity for darkness/negative predilections of these versions of himself. This scar, a physical manifestation of their desires and ambitions, partially blinds them. Thief Yoongi, also not a "perfect" person but as perfectly flawed as the rest of us, no scar, now has better clarity, definitively puts to rest those past versions of himself, confirmed by the camera panning to the body of dead Police Chief Yoongi (we never saw Mad Kings' body after he was shot in Daechwita). Also other things to note.... - the goldfish in the water dispenser, may also represent him in his life as an idol. He's not free, constantly been looked at. Being in a water dispenser is also an interesting choice, water is life, so life to the fandom, life to himself...? The goldfish is a member of the carp family, carp usually symbolises fighting and overcoming adversity. - Thief Yoongi wears a jade bracelet. Jade has an association with wealth and nobility. It can also symbolise serenity, balance and wisdom garnered from tranquillity. - The red chopsticks he used to kill, he also uses to eat. - Thief Yoongis' gang reminds me of the shadow figures in Interlude: Shadow, but instead of running away from them, his shadows are now what helps him fight and survive.

Cinematography is so good, it takes from Old Boy (korean version), Hong Kong Cinema mostly, Shang Chi a bit (flashback fight scene), Joker (burning the money and hanging outside the car), and Scarface (in bath with money). It's him showing that he owns the streets, not the corrupt cop. Also, in the song that just dropped, Amygdala, it shows what the scar means, in both this and Daechwita.

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. PD did u spot that there is 6 gang members with Suga. o.0 Suga always has BTS represented in his MVs. He so sweet. Jimin ult bias, Suga wrecker, OT7. He looks so hot. Love the souvenir jacket his wearing. I have one too but mine is black and has cranes on it. I love dragons though and my fav color is blue & black. I kind of thought we would not have a song like Daechwita on this album. Well guess i was wrong, huh. 0.0 I was really surprised on 1st watch. I never thought he would connect 3 MVs together. 0.0 That is brilliant. Suga is such a genius. I love it. Suga during the premier said to listen to Daechwita, Haegeum, and Amygdala. So that's what i am going to do. Powerful song. I like that we continue the story from Daechwita. But this song is more violent. Geez. He is such a savage! I liked it. Good rhythm. Suga is a visual. Excited to rewatch the MVs in order like he suggested. Did u spot the Joker reference i missed that. Ur reaction was many of us. He is such a boss! Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army 💟 Borahae ARMY *KEZ* said on 4/21/23 So Haegeum means allowing/unlocking something that was forbidden. His whole album is overflowing with his emotions, and not only does he talk to himself in his album, he talks directly to the listener (especially with one particular song, where it almost feels like he breaks the 'fourth wall'. I've experienced it via a movie before, but never by song, until now) there are ARMY translator accounts on Twitter, so if you want to listen to his album on Spotify or Apple music etc, you can have the lyrics pulled up to help you understand what he is expressing 💜 ScreamCheeese said on 4/21/23 Haegeum also means “to liberate” or “to release” from bans, restraints, or something forbidden. You also really need to see Daechwita!! You’ll understand a lot more of this MV and it’s just as amazing! Just a movie-like. Min Yoongi is a genius for a reason 😩 Plants healing said on 4/21/23 Haegeum has two meanings. The first is a traditional Korean stringed instrument used in this music "this song's a haegeum", and the second, as the lyrics say, "a new kind of haegeum" means "unlock". Yoongi uses both haegeum in his lyrics. Addison McDorman said on 4/22/23 Haegeum: the English lyrics & the meaning. Haegeum is a song about unlocking our new potentials, freeing something previously forbidden. The word “Haegeum” has a double meaning. On one side, it’s a traditional Korean string instrument that has a very peculiar sound, but this is not the authentic meaning Agust D/Suga intended originally. Haegeum” means “allowing/unlocking something that was forbidden.” Here is how he explained it in an interview: The word “Haegeum” came to me when I was young. I played rhythm games, I loved rhythm action games. When beating a certain stage, you’d unlock a forbidden song, then you could play a new rhythm. It was a “freedom from the forbidden.” Why don’t I try and break free from those things? This is explicitly confirmed by the English translation of the lyrics in Haegeum: This song’s simply about freeing what’s forbidden but you must remember to differentiate freedom from self-indulgence This song’s a haegeum Get on board now This lively rhythm A new kind of haegeum Marissa McWhiter said on 4/22/23 The second meaning of haegeum is the lifting of the ban of something forbidden. Adding what I think the story is based on things I’ve heard from other reactors...commentaries and what he said in the d-day documentary. First of all he did say in his intro of the video during the premiere that this video is the second of a trilogy. He said the three videos meant to be seen together is Daechwita, haegeum and amygdala ...which is coming up! So I believe the king in Daechwita, the first form of august D, was killed by black haired scar face agust D. But then black hair becomes the boss in Haegeum. He seems to be a police detective or officer that is corrupt. He runs his operation from above the Asian noodle restaurant. New Agust d wants to kill him too! Maybe like in Daechwita it’s because of his corruption. So he invades the headquarters and gets his money. On his way out we see a guy making a phone call to the boss...but new agust d gives him a nod. So I think just like in Daechwita new agust d has a deal with this insider to help him kill the boss. So this new guy didn’t really want the money it was just a bait to get him close to the boss. So like in Daechwita, as he was about to be killed he switches the story and kills the Boss instead. Before the boss gets shot we see the boss smirk. I saw a comment that this could be because he knows that this New guy will also meet his fate! So in the end new guy was accepted by the boss’ men and he was delivered to their headquarters the restaurant where he takes over. The final Shot of him eating with the tool he used to kill a man suggests that the violence will sustain him. So now we will wait for amygdala to see how the story ends! So the song itself was explained by Suga in the documentary. He explains that as idols there are a lot of things they seem to be restricted from doing, acts that are normal for some will become controversies for idols. Like if his smoking at the age of 31 will be seen as wrong then he wants this song to be the start of liberating or lifting some of the restrictions put on them. He also talked about the effect on too much information and how easy to get them also starts to restrict thinking. It’s a very deep song! The funny thing is...this song has triggered a bit of hate from kpop on social media! Fans of other groups are thinking Yoongi was targeting them...or even saying he shouldn’t be against capitalism since he is from Hybe! Lol totally missing the point of the song...or maybe just proving Yoongi’s observations! He’s a genius! The rest of the album is genius! I hope you do an album reaction! Mic mic bungee said on 4/22/23 what's amazing is that in the MV, hanja 解禁 was on the screen which = haegeum, in terms of "to lift a ban" not 奚琴 = haegeum the instrument. WHICH MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE because the lyrics talk a lot about judgement, prejudice, and being free from all that. something about it is so raw, and honestly, i feel like it's a big fu to those who try to "cancel" grown idols for doing something normal humans do, like him "smoking" in the MV or just dating, or any issues some fans can't accept. "This song is a haegeum" meaning this song is targeting kpop "fans" who always make a big deal out of things that are not even supposed to be controversial HE'S SO ICONIC FOR THIS. Steve Blevins said on 4/25/23 Please note the split-second image of a hand holding almonds at 13:36. This is a reference to ALMOND: A NOVEL about a guy who has trouble identifying and describing experienced emotions because of a neuropsychological condition (alexithymia). The "almond" refers to the amygdala, an almond-shaped area of the brain. Yoongi was seen reading this book in a preview to IN THE SOOP. The book is on Namjoon's recommended list.

I love both of them, though probably Daechwita a little more because, well, it's the start of all of this. (Also the flow switch in the middle is just PURE FIRE.) Yoongi's talked about his Shadow being his ambition, the drive to be on top, even potentially at the expense of his health (mental and physical) and relationships. It's what's helped him to succeed, but it's also been the collar around his neck. He's seen massive success, but at what cost? He needs that drive, but he has to be constantly vigilant to keep it from taking him over and driving him to things he doesn't want. I feel like, with Daechwita, we had the vagabond rebel coming in to restore balance to the land by killing the mad king... Haegeum gives us a new perspective on that story by showing that it was only one chapter of a constant cycle. The corrupt cop may not have started out that way-- perhaps he brought justice initially by taking down a corrupt official. I personally think his chuckle at seeing Agust's gun was recognition-- "I've gone too far again, and now my next iteration is here to take me out." Maybe Yoongi's haegeum is... moderation. He (and BTS) are finding a work-life balance that doesn't require the gruelling pace they've kept themselves to for the last 10 years.

I think you're spot on about the 'ominous music' part in the end. In Amygdala he talks about where the scar on his eye comes from, that it's self inflicted, and how he kills off parts of himself that he can't safe. But also how trauma-responses repeat over and over again. In that context the last shot of the video gave me pause as well, where he looks into the camera and his hair kind of reforms the scar on his eye. I think he's talking about repeating cycles here, how now this version could potentially fill the left-open role and become the new 'corrupt' one - and on and on it goes. Also he returns in the police car to the hideout of the cop - those are now his that he took over. So yeah, I think you caught that quite well. I'm SO looking forward to your reaction and thougths on Amygdala and how it closes off this trilogy.

thank you for your reaction. i really like your take on Haegeum, esp the technicalities, the meaning of the song and the message that yoongi wanted to convey. a lot of people, after watching this and some not even, just seeing the screenshots that's been circulating on social media, have thrown hate at him without even trying to dive into the story behind it. anyway, for a lot of army and others who cared to really "listen" to what yoongi said in this song, we heard him and we understand or at the least, try to understand and relate to it. i think it is criticism to both us and himself, and like you said, a double-edgaed sword. yoongi just released the MV for AMYGDALA too. i think you would like this MV too, along with the song itself. yoongi's suggestion is to watch Daechwita, Haegeum and Amygdala in one sitting and in that order. P.S. for me, if you exclude amygdala, i like haegeum just a bit more than daechwita. but out of the 3, because they're connected (you'll see after you watch amygdala even if each of the 3 songs are stand alones) amygdala is my favorite.

i'm sorry for what you are going through, i wish i could support you monterarily but i hope you'll be able to just take those monthts off. you deserve it that being said, when you started and went "i hope agust d can also put a smile on my face" i was so excited and happy for you because i was SURE he would. also, in case you havent watched it yet but want to, and even though amygdala has a warning at the beginning now, take care of yourself in case you're gonna watch it.

i think the scarred agust d laughed because he knows they can never kill him, he ultimately comes back because the other agust d might also get addicted to power like he did and like the king did

Thank you for this reaction. I know you've been both ill and very busy and sad. So stay healthy please. It is brilliantly shot. Frame by frame. The coloring as you pointed out is very 70's/80's Hong Kong vibe. I love Suga. The cynical part of me thinks: Telling people not to confuse money with well being and originality seems (at the very least) ironic. This man is a multimillionaire. IF the MV is more about avoiding corruption then ok and yet . . . Seriously great reaction. The cognitive dissonance in this is the best part of the conflict.

One more thing I felt is that the scene near the end of the MV Yoongi hanging out of the police car was very reminiscent of the movie Joker.. and kind of fits the vibe of someone gradually succumbing to the societal conditions and is on the path of insanity.

Hope you're feeling better! What I also took out of Haegum is a sense of taking more responsibility - for what we do, what we think, what we say. Being aware that all of that usually 1) comes from somewhere, 2) goes somewhere, 3) does something. It can come from ambition, compassion, greed, the views media and social media transport to us, etc. It will always go somewhere, be it another thought, an action, spoken words, etc. and eventually reach people in some way or form and do something to them. Indulging in whatever we personally think or do can definitely hurt them, and fleeing into excuses of freedom of speech or "well everyone (online, around me, wherever) does it" doesn't change that. ... but, imo, being aware of that power can also be liberating in a way? We all can change something, as long as we are aware of the why's and who's. Idk the English word for it and it's probably not entirely what he's going for (since this is mostly a wake-up call), but one of the most important concepts I learned about in therapy was the idea of being able to influence my surroundings and circumstances. There's quite a few instances where depression is fueled by the feeling of being unable to do that. It's my main struggle, so I tend to come back to it a lot, and probably why my brain immediately circled back to it with this song. That, and his commentary on how we as a society are constantly tearing ourselves apart right now, and how that's the furthest thing from freedom... truly resonated haha. I love this album a lot.

Haegum is an incredible song. It is an earworm that hits and the lyrics are very honest and interesting. The MV is a cycle and it is soooo good. Also, He released the MV for Amygdala and it is really hard-hitting. It provides a lot of perspective to the anger in Agust D that we've seen so far. It is heavy so please take your time before you jump into it. Great to see you again, PD.

for the chuckle that he makes before getting killed: i think he's laughing because the cycle will never end. he will always get corrupted and will always lose himself. also because in the final scene he's carrying the cop's jacket, and when he looks at the camera his hair falls on his face exactly like the scar

I hope you check out Amygdala MV too. I think it’s really thought provoking, vulnerable and personal. But maybe take some time first. It’s not a rush. You can decide after you’ve listened to the album. The MV made me cry but also cathartic as someone who also struggled with mental health. Yoongi recommended to watch Daechwita, Haegeum and Amygdala in one sitting. But when you get to be in a better place, you may want to check it out. Always rooting for you! Take care 💜

Road to D-Day translated that one line as “the difference between license and liberty” rather than self indulgence, etc. My idea regarding the bath scene and him throwing the cigarette in order to burn the money- It combines a scene from Scar Face and a scene from The Dark Knight, two of Yoong’s favorite movies. The bathtub is from Scar Face and burning the money comes at the end of the Dark Knight as the Joker throws a match on a huge pile of money to the chagrin of those present. As the money is burning the Joker says, “It’s not about the money, it’s about the message.” With Yoongi, it’s always about the message.
