The word haegeum has two meanings in its pronunciation. One is the name of a traditional Korean instrument 'Haegeum' used in this song, and the Chinese character 'Haegeum(解禁)' means to break the ban.

Great reaction Anthony and I think you’re right, a lot of people will miss the message that Yoongi is trying to convey, that we’re all slaves to the system and that unless we stay true to ourselves and our values, that ultimately money and power will inevitably corrupt!

Exactly, kpopies on twitter are fuming and thinking he was trying to call out their faves 😂 "how can he work for Hybe and talk about capitalism?" 😂

Yeah, and at the same time he’s stating that even IF we stay true to our values, we will eventually find ourselves in positions we tried so hard to reach and then realize we were mistaken or our values changed, we changed and with the new perspective from our new standpoint we see things differently and have to get rid of earlier beliefs… I love this new rabbithole he opened… And literally he just said it’s about liberation 😂💜

@@cokolwiekjestdostepne9607 I'm sorry, but the kpoppies are so out of their depth. In Polar Nights he says, “The world’s bullshit, but you don’t have to be/So open your eyes and see the real world.” In other words, you can live in a corrupt system if you don't allow your vision to cloud and or allow yourself to get sucked in. As for feeling called out, you know he would say that if you feel that way, it's on you.
@boopyournose5698 Жыл бұрын
I also want to add that no matter what you do, you will still be a slave to the system. I assume that's why the detective laughed when Agust D 3rd was about to shoot him. And the chopsticks. He killed with the chopsticks and ate with them - you eat what you kill (or the normal cycle of life - you kill to eat). Or in business - you inevitably step over someone to be at the top. So even if you don't want to hurt anyone and want everyone to be equal, it's impossible. Someone will always suffer so others can have a good life. (Omelas in real life, I guess). However, the lyrics are more about focusing on yourself. So the whole story is so contradicting, but that's what makes it so fun to analyze. I believe Yoongi understands that it's not in his power to change the system so he focuses on himself, making sure he's not stepping over his morals so at least he could feel clean to some extent (since the only person he can't run away from is him, he has to like himself to some degree, therefore, he needs to stay true to himself and cut out all the background noise that wants to mold him in their image).
@darrenraffan7804 Жыл бұрын
@@boopyournose5698 Fantastic point. Plus I was watching Knox Hill’s reaction subsequently to watching Anthony’s and he was talking about the duality of the message, between freedom of expression and self indulgence, which can be extended to the haegeum itself, a 2 stringed instrument. Yoongi even used the ‘2’ chopsticks to kill, then eat, only one of which is the original purpose. Our boy Yoongi really is quite the deep thinking philosophical thinker isn’t he?

The social commentary on the D-Day album is nothing less than I expected from Agust D. I also interpreted the story of the MV the same way: the common man from Daechwita who killed the emperor has become corrupt and is taken out by this new Agust D - and he smiles when he shoots him because the new Agust D knows that he could be next. The multiple levels of the themes of power, corruption, liberation, freedom, lifting a ban are all complex and many. Agust D - the philosopher's rapper. Loved this dissection, Anthony.

As many others have commented, haegeum means a "folksy" type of instrument, but also liberation/to break the ban. The instrument is also known for conveying a lot of emotion; in many ways the opposite of the official royal war music of Daechwita which signifies authority and power. Also, I LOVE this song/MV - Yoongi in that leather coat ought to be illegal, and those wicked grins? Gangsta/mafia!Yoongi will live rent free in my brain for a long, long time. Can't wait for the third installment, which is apparently the MV for Amygdala...

Agust D-2 lowkey becomes even more powerful than Agust D, his scar has healed a bit, but it still there cause, with mo money mo problems in comes Agust D-3 (from Haegum) 4. Yes this is Daechwita storyline in modern era. Thai Army explained that this MV was filmed in Thailand and that place is called the “Thief Market” Rattanakosin Island (old name Thailand from 1782-1892) and it was the first international shopping center in that period after the abolition of slavery. This is how he explain it: The market came to exist because the people in the palace freed from the slavery when they moved out of the palace, they received goods from their master and stole some. They then brought those goods to sell them in this area. Haegeum is a traditional instrument but also means the liberation of the prohibition.

The Haegeum sound was prominently heard in the first few seconds of the MV (at exactly 0:37 of the MV) and 11:49 of this reaction video. And the main TEA of the cigar part is the idea of how small things like "smoking a cigarette" will make headlines to make you a prey and center for criticism. Smoking a cigarette is not a crime at all but idols seen smoking cigarette are being treated like a criminal. And this happened with V, so this is a shoutout to those making headlines and criticized V for smoking a cigarette. He also called out many more esp KZbin and corruptions going on around the industry. And now this song just became so controversial that a lot were so triggered just because AgustD is spitting facts.

Haegum does have a double meaning, not only a musical instrument: The other meaning of "haegum" is applied when it is used in popular Korean vernacular, in which it means "lifting a ban and allowing something that is forbidden," as host IU explained while interviewing Agust D on IU's Palette in April 2023. ALSO: One of the first things I noticed about Suga was his skin....man it is beautiful....his hands are gorgeous too....I'm just glad someone else mentioned it....I love that....the man just glows....gorgeous.

He is playing with words, Haegeum can be both korean traditional instrument or "Break the ban". Agust D discography is divided into three : - Agust D (1st mixtape) : He was angry, back at the time, against haters and whoever came on their roads (even his own self) while he holds that passion inside him and the dream to succeed - D-2 : He is confronting both sides of himself, the blond hair Agust D the angry one and the black hair Agust D the rebel. Daechwita was released on 2020 when they were very successful, so he considers the anger he hold inside him is the motor or the reason that made him successful it pushed him to prove everyone that they are the KINGS! 4 years passed since his first mixtape, people get more mature so here comes the black hair Agust D; the one who is now getting aware that anger would only damage him so he came to get rid of it and set new rules. D-Day : We have now two black hair Agust D face to face, the rebel and the policeman. Police always refer to order, rules... so black hair Agust D who killed the king and made a new rules for his life on Daechwita became the policeman on Haegeum! Since Haegeum means in Chinese "Break the ban", this song is about him fighting the "bans" or rules he enforced himself to follow during those last 3 years. The final of Daechwita was not clear, did he kill the king or not? Did he win against his anger or not? It's like he was indecisive back at the time but now he killed the policeman which proves that now he knows what he wants and he is not afraid of anything or anyone. I've always admired him for his personality, he is the kind of person I really aspire to be : fearless, mentally strong, independent... He is the strongest person I've ever seen, he went through so much and still highly and firmly standing like a mountain! I love all Bangtan members equally, but coming to solo music I've always had a soft spot for Yoongi's music. He has a sort of craziness (if I can say so) within him that I'm attracted to, he always sets the standards high when it comes to music. His MVs are the most cinematographic music videos the industry have ever seen plus his acting skills... Man is on a whole another level ! The only thing in my life I'll never regret is being his fan! Thank you Anthony for your reaction, I love how you always get deeply within the songs and the MVs, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos 🙏🏻

I love how he uses his platform to talk about current issues. The word "Haegeum" has two meanings. In the song, Suga raps,' "This song's simply about freeing what is forbidden."

When I looked up Haegum I also at first got the string instrument. Later I saw on KZbin somewhere where it said that (I think Yoongi) when playing some video games when you found a new level that it was a hidden Haegum and you would get a new song or music for for the game. I could have interpreted some of that incorrectly, but it was essentially a breaking through to a new level and your reward was a new song

Don't know if you saw about the countdown, he told us to watch Daechwita, Haegeum, and Amygdala in order. Can't wait for Amygdala MV in a couple days, considering what it sounds like and says in its lyrics and how it'll tie to these 2!

You are so strong cause I was watching this at my work place and because of not being able to scream, I started crying. Btw, there are so many details connected with Daechwita and this. And he said that you should watch this, AMYGDALA and Daechwita together. He will reveal his scar story during the other MV

As I see in Deachwita Agust D aka Suga killed the emperor and became a boss. The emperor was angry, the boss loved money too much, now Suga killed the boss and finally free from his old selfs. As Suga said, he won't make another Agust D song as he wants to make music as Suga in the future. I also see that the scar is less sightful which means that Suga is healed completely. Emperor's scar was fresh, the boss' scar is sightful but not that much and Suga has any. I love how Suga made a full circle of his story and I can't wait for more projects of him.

A heageum is also a slang for the lifting of a ban. He talks about being freed from that which is forbidden. Heageum is a freedom of sorts. 💜 Love your thoughtful reviews!

definitely agree with your interpretation of the mv! the police officer is the "rebel" suga from daechwita who has become corrupted by his authority and wealth. great reaction!

Haegeum in the Korean dictionary has another meaning of unleashing what has been forbidden, and people were saying on Korean forums that Suga talked about his plan to release a song, about being free of negativity and that this song is something to do with what he said somehow. From the lyrics, He mentioned something about how the influx of information prohibits people’s freedom of imagination, and the song itself is haegeum (unleashing the forbidden). Im also trying to figure out things from the video.😂 btw ‘mit nun ji’ is to believe and it does sounds very similar to min yoon gi hahaha you are such a good listener!!

why am I back here? Anthony understands Yoongi and I will always be coming back to his reactions to ease the pain of missing them, I miss Yoongi already 😭

In korean "Haegeum" also means "unlock" so It could be that he wanted to say to "detach" from what society wants you to be and do and Just don't be afraid to speak and be yourself because society standards shouldn't define you just to fit in something.. that Deep inside doesn't belong to you.

heageum also means to ban, against restrictions. the message of the song is to inform us of the state of today and all the corrupt chaotic things that make us a slave'' to the system. he wants us to think about our lives and ''rise''. you were correct, he is asking us to join him in the ''rise against the systematic machine. to realize we are ''slaves and change. i love the message and song. suga did a fantastic job, this was a movie. the whole album was excellent.💜

In an interview Suga said this album ends Agust D. He has find to himself and Suga will "stay". So I think Suga is killing Agust D in this video.
@vanessaemano5357 Жыл бұрын
You read my mind. That's my interpretation too. Haegeum means lift a ban no restrictions. It's like the one who kills the king in Daechwita lived a successful life but still in restrictions. Free but still in restrictions where he can't still do what he wants. Still by the rules. No imagination just following the system. This new AgustD, is free in restrictions. Living free. Not by Self indulgence.

Since, Agustd is a Trilogy. Yoongi said you should watch Daechwita, Haegeum and Armgydala {coming apr 25th midnight kst} all in one sitting. If the Boss killed the king and freedom guy killed the Boss.... I can't wait to see what is in store for Armgydala!!! thank you for your reaction! I really enjoyed it! ❤

Live version from 26.04 killed me tbh, the entire concert just ugh as soon as you are able to, check it out even not for yt, just for yourself, it's so worth it! Japanese concert will be streamed but srsl you haven't seen such Yoongi: drinking beer on stage, cursing, flipping birds, taking fan's phone to record himself goddammit it was a blast

Haegeum can also be translated as "raising the banner" which I think is more fitting for this song and its message. Daechwita is a song that has the connotation that a song is playing for the arrival of the king, so, for me, raising a banner fits a lot better. He is raising a banner and "announces" the war on corruption.

Anthony, of all the reactions you've done till date, this might be just the top notch one!! Gotta admire your priceless reaction to the music video, the lyrics, the symbolism, the flow, the background score and what not and not to forget, the man Mr. Augst D. Simply loved it❤ Keep'em coming, Anthony!

For those who keep saying this is his last as Agust D well it's not yall. As yall can see, it's his last trilogy as Agust D story...how Agust D was made through all the things that happened in his earlier life (as yall see in Daechwita, Haeguem, and Amygdala MVs in order) anger, depression, etc. This man is truly a living legend when talking about real life stuff for everyone to listen to in his raw and honest music. Yoongi is truly goated...he is just evolving now.

Imagine Agust-D just casually walk around New York side street with all that Mafia look, the coat, the tie, the slick black hair and the scars omg. Even without anyone recognizing him they all be starstrucked lol

21:15, and a lot of antis did not get the message, dudes started a hate bandwagon talking about shit that Yoongi didnt even talk about, or mentioned, like Yoongi's music is a test of "can you or can you not comprehend what life is about", and the antis definetly failed it.
@burningred9147 Жыл бұрын
Nah cuz, at times it really does like that kpopers especially those on Twitter have rocks in place of brain. They started a hate train on Jimin as well last month about the autotune, without even trying to understand the context of the obvious usage of the autotune. Now they're doing the same shit with Yoongi's lyrics, like if you actually listen to the song and understand the context of the song, you'll see what he means.
@triplej8666 Жыл бұрын
@@burningred9147 nah yall r overanalysing it, the autotune was used bcuz jimin is a bad singer and thats factual
@dhrvnq Жыл бұрын
nah everyone uses autotune
@burningred9147 Жыл бұрын
@@triplej8666 You're proving my point. Actual singers, vocal coaches will disagree with you. And maybe go listen to the song, autotune was used only on the rap parts 15-20s at Max, not the actual vocals and too as a stylistic tool, to create a back and forth distorted communication. Y'all want Jimin to be a bad singer so bad. man has given hundreds of stunning live vocals performances, have sang Acapella multiple times, came up with a song at the spot and sang it and so much more. 1-2 bad performances doesn't make a singer bad, almost every artist has had some bad performances. There's a reason why Jimin from the beginning even without any actual vocal training debuted as the lead singer of the group and gets the most difficult notes and parts of BTS'S songs and also the most difficult choreographies at the same time. He's not the greatest vocalist alive and everyone knows that, Jimin himself never claims to be one. But he's a good singer, a top-tier dancer and an extremely talented bonafide artist who makes good fucking music.
