I think you're exactly right about everything except this wasn't a song given to Moonbyul - she wrote the lyrics and devised the concept. Love how your perspective on gender led you to understand immediately that this isn't a girl doing a boy group song, it's Moonbyul being genuine & being herself doing a gender neutral song. It's not a bad girl or girl crush concept devised by a kpop artistic team & marketing dept to fit music they ordered in off a songwriting menu so they can make money by promoting an idol using an image they think will be popular. It's Moonbyul being Moonbyul and I agree that it's both groundbreaking and progressive. Imo over the last two years Mamamoo has matured and developed personally and artistically to the point where they've reached their full potential to express themselves as artists and take on even more of a leadership role as socially conscious members of the kpop community than they have in the past with their lgbtq support and efforts to reach out to hearing-impaired fans. We've seen it with with Hip and their campaign against internet bullying, Wheein's Goodbye regarding love in any form, and Solar's commentary about female genital mutilation and the song she uploaded today about saving polar bears. MMM has always pushed the gender envelope but with Eclipse Moonbyul became the first kpop artist I've seen who simply ignores and transcends gender altogether. 👍🌜🌟❤️️

a very cool thing that moos noticed about eclipse's promotions is that in the stages in which she wore the white outfits (representing moonstar) and the ones with the dark outfits (representing monster) she had different demeanor and attitude in the performance according to the concept! edit: small correction in the explanation

@keithcraig5064 жыл бұрын
@@ellenm9860 In essence, you are correct. But the light side / dark side of the moon is just the symbology used in the song. The concept of the music video goes a bit deeper than that, it's a bit more yin and yang. It's about how everyone (including Moonbyul) has a light (good) side and a dark (evil) side in them and who you ultimately end up being depends on how you balance those two sides. In an interview Moonbyul explained the 3 main personas in this video. First we have the light side, Moonstar, in white, referred to as the protector who is protecting you with her light. Then we have Monster, in black, who is, well, a monster. Between the two we have the Mediator pulling and being pulled by the ropes as she tries to keep balance between the two.

I love the fact that her company gives her (and all of Mamamoo) the freedom to be herself. They've never pushed a style on her, they don't force her to wear something she doesn't want to wear, they give them creative freedom and in return they made a really unique and confident group. I wish that other companies could see that letting your idols be more involved in the creative process, and allowing them to be themselves, can be way more appealing than forcing them to fit into pre-made molds.
@yeskblanco91034 жыл бұрын
Moonbyul said this in an interview when asked about the huge differences in style from previous release Selfish: "The style I wanted to try is something like what you see in Eclipse. I've been longing for such style. I don't want a line dividing 'masculine and femenine' in music. I thought 'this could work for a woman', so I tried it out." Honestly, out of all of the comebacks you had to catch up on, this is the reaction I was looking forward to the most. What she did was historic! And I wish more people would have shown the support she deserved. Nevertheless, you can still see it in the numbers how big of an impact she made in the industry and I hope that moving forward more female idols dare to try something like this and follow her progressive approach to everything she does. Also, AleXa did a dance cover to this. You should watch it on your own time because it is FANTASTIC!

Moonbyul as a role model helped me accept my style, the way i dress and carry myself. Some people misgender me because i have short hair and i usually wear loose fitting clothes. My body is slightly masculine, my face is androgynous. I’m tend to act and look more masculine than feminine, but i don’t like it when people address me as a guy. It makes me uncomfortable, like i have to change my appearance just to be seen as a woman. Stereotyping doesn’t die. If i have short hair, people are quick to assume that i’m posing as a boy or that i’m gay (though i’m bi). I’m grateful to have Moonbyul as an example of just being yourself whenever i start having doubts about the way i am. Despite not personally knowing her, i can relate to her and seeing that she’s comfortable in her own skin regardless of what others thought, it gave me hope that someday i will be too. Moonbyul is such an inspiration, showing us that one’s style shouldn’t always be gender labelled.

Moonbyul is unique and I love that this song represents her so well. In some behind the scene video she said something along the lines of "I'm glad I get to do the concept I really wanted to make" and that's just so refreshing in an industry where performers are often just given something kinda regardless of what they feel like doing. I’m so happy with the reception. I also really wondered how she’d flourish as an artist and I honestly had some doubt as to how well she could stand on her own with her kind of concept. She really shined
@LZeon262 жыл бұрын
She won in a show of singing contest for girl group rappers. The show called Second World. The prize a winner would get was an opportunity to sing an ost for a jtbc drama, and a solo stage for Golden Disk Award ceremony. You said you wonder if her company want to promote her as a solo since she's that good. Apparently, RBW has no plan for her. Her Lunatic song was lunch an hour late than it should be, and now she won that show and earned a solo performance stage for GDA, her company decided to do a concert in HK on the very same day of GDA. Moonbyul have prepare for that show since April this year that's why she decided to leave her DJ work at Studio Moon NIght to focus on that. Her company started planning concerts just this late quarter of the year. They didnt even anticipated that she might win and save the date for a GDA performance. And now they saying that she cant attend GDA and had to pre-record her stage. HK concert details are not even out yet, there Philippines concert willl be later than HK, but the ticket sale will be by first week of december already. Fans are demanding RBW to change HK concert date and LET MOONBYUL PERFORM LIVE ON GDA. But they dont want to answer us and refused to listen. They rather sabotage her success as a solo artist and as a winner of that show. Btw, thank you for believing Moonbyul's capability as an artist.

PD as someone still learning Korean (still a toddler level here) it would be interesting to see your translations of songs. No language can be translated one to one and different interpretations can be had by those with differing levels of knowledge from one language to the other. Had this thought because of your into to this today with the Korean vs English title

FINALLY YOU REACT TO MOONBYUL
@trinhvietanh9521 Жыл бұрын
I love your reaction. You was so right that this isn’t a concept, this is her. I feel like a lot of time when I watch K pop i feel like the concept don’t really fit the artist - like they were given something and were force to do it so they try to act up for the video but it wasn’t them. In my opinion, music is a way of expression and music will sound the best when the artist sing from their heart, that the case with many western artist like Lady Gaga, Adele and I feel like it also the case here with Moonbyul. THIS IS ONE OF THE SONGS I LIKE THE MOST FROM HER.

I think after hip this shows that the rainbow is going with the essence of the group. putting there personality of the girls up front. Letting who they are shine through. I hope they keep letting this happen.

I always enjoy your perspective on the songs and their meaning. I am somewhat new to K-Pop (1 1/2 years) and have been checking most of the groups you have reviewed. I hadn’t really paid attention to Mamamoo but am familiar with Gogobebe. So this solo project from Moon Byul intrigued me so I clicked to watch and could not believe my ears and the visual feast laid out upon us. The groups I listen to have started to get a harder edge to them BUT not like this. I should check out more boy bands but I tend to lean towards the girl crush concept. But the song. I watched it multiple times plus the performance video and Alexa’s cover. It is such an amazing song and aggressive dance to match. It definitely stands out amongst her peers and perfect for her.

I just recently heard this song and I instantly loved it, and all the outfits, and her. She's so cool, I feel like I'm in love lol I've been listening to her solo songs, I should really check out Mamamoo's whole group but I feel like I just won't like it as much as Moon Byul's solo stuff. Also I think I like this MV's concept so much because I connect with it a lot; Struggling against two polar opposites of your personality, whether it be dark vs light or femininity and masculinity. I really feel the gender fluid concept you mentioned.
