I feel like SM fully knows which genres work together and how to transition into them in one song, which is why it works. You had songs like I Got a Boy, Zimzalabim, and Next Level that were complete rollercoasters of different genres but that also mixed really well with one another for some reason. This, however, sounds like they literally took 3 different songs, put them together, and called it a day. The girls really deserved something better for a debut.

It just feels like JYPE is doing too much and trying to do the experimental sound but not understanding how to go about that properly. I listened to a rearrangement of this song with just the Superhero part, and I was stunned cause I could really see how much potential this debut had, and they really dropped the ball with it. If they had broken this song into two separate tracks and dropped both as their debut (think blackpink with boombayah and whistle) it would have put their duality as a group on full display. A performance/dance centered track in 'O.O' and vocal focused in 'Superhero'. That would have given both music videos breathing room to highlight each member because they are all lost in the chaos of the debut m/v. The vision for this group is clearly "red velvet, but make it stray kids". This debut was the most tragic way to showcase that versatility.

I think this is a perfect take. Honestly, I'm worried. I think the most important songs for a group are their debut and their 1st comeback. If they DON'T have a good 1st comeback, it's gonna be tough for the girls. Many people will forget about them and it'll be hard for them to redeem themselves if their 1st comeback is something just like this... I really like the girls and I love their pre debut performances but no one stood out in this. They all have different vibes and then trying to balance each other out while going for a girl crush vibe just doesn't work. If things go well and their 1st comeback does something for me to forgive this debut song, I kid you not each and every member will stand out. They all are very good and all of them could've stood out. Ik JYP is trying to make it as 1 group so that one doesn't stand out from the other but it just doesn't work with these amazing girls. Like, there wasn't any eye catching individual shot (besides maybe BAE) and not one of them stood out, the group themselves didn't as well sadly. Let's see what'll happen. Though I will Stan the group because of the girls, definitely not because of this debut. Wish them the best of luck

JYPE introduced NMIXX as a perfect girl group with all-rounder members but they really had the audacity to give the girls a debut song like this. I heard there were a lot composers that participated in making this song. Sure enough, too many cooks spoiled the broth. I think the 2nd part of the song where they're dancing with dress actually sounds amazing. Pop rock and hi-teen vibe kinda suits them though. Totally agree about how the MV was not a good introduction to the group members. There was so much going on with all the different sets, special effects, wide choreo shots etc that the members ended up completely lost in it. A strategy a lot of groups use is to give each member their own separate set and use it for close ups/beauty shots whenever they it's their part, or have each of them come up one at a time at the beginning and leave the group shots for later, and it might be cliche at this point but it really helps highlighting their different charms, whereas with this MV I don't really remember anyone except the center.

I think JYP wanted to appeal to the newer generation, so they made a song which they believed was trendy for Kpop standards and thought this song would create a unique quality to them, but they went all out from the beginning. As everyone has been comparing them to Aespa, aespa never dived into experimental music in the beginning, they played it safe with Black Mamba and then slowly started experimenting different sounds. Not only does aespa do this but lot of groups play it safe in the beginning, so they can attract a wider audience, for example Loona. I feel JYP should have done the same than jumping right into a wild song. The song is not bad or good, but it doesn’t do a good job in introducing the group to the audience because now they’re always going to be remembered for this debut.
@michikomi63582 жыл бұрын
But i love that they play it safe then pulls out a next level because I get curious “what can they do next” but this debut had every genre in it so its less intriguing for me, like we know they can do some bad ass song, then a cute/edy/rock song, then back to girl crush. So what did I miss? Not sexy they’re too young

playing catch up is exactly how it feels. because of the success of NCT and AESPA it seem like JYP have this obsession with trying to be like SM, instead of just focusing on what makes JYP groups unique. JYP idols are all talented and some of the biggest groups have come out of the company so i don't understand this bizarre move to try and make the next Sticker or Next Level. i think this sort of extreme experimentation should be left to SM, since they're clearly the pioneers of this genre in kpop. these girls seem talented, and their debut did them dirty purely due to the fact their company are trying too hard to execute what SM do perfectly.
@isabela35192 жыл бұрын
ur so right. and its weird when you remember that jyp made his own entertainment company because he was rejected by SM. JYP has produced a lot of original groups (twice, wonder girls, itzy, got7, 2pm, etc...) so it's really disappointing that this comeback is just a copy and paste of so many other groups but worse. the girls are so talented and deserved a better way to make their first impression.

The middle section of the song was absolutely amazing and would've been so great seperately, I don't understand why they tried so hard to pull a "not the norm" concept by mixing two so totally different sections that feel like two songs into one, with the heavier one being really messy in production. Now after some listens, what I especially don't get are the lyrics. How did someone like 153, who wrote on so many cool songs in the past put this out and thought it's good? The talent of the girls is clearly there, but this was such a way over the top and forcedly messy debut concept that I hope won't hurt them in the long run. Fingers crossed that JYP does better for their 1st comeback.

I totally agree with how there's no member that particularly sticks out. The song itself is fine to me but I feel like the vocal pitch wasn't my favourite and there's no one I can pick out and follow. Usually with a new group I find one member I love and then that's what gets me into the group but there really isn't anyone here that does that. I don't like to compare but this really feels like JYPE's attempt at getting to SM's level. Every group in SM has that chaotic but addicting sound but usually JYPE follows the route of addictive and ear-worm for their gg's which works for them. I understand wanting NMIXX to be a powerful performance but Itzy also have powerful performances but every member individually sticks with them compared to NMIXX. Maybe the group size is too big but it also feels like only saw like 5 members outside of the group scenes.

Absolutely no hate to the girls, it's clear to me that they're top tier talent who deserve a better venue to show that off than this. My two main thoughts were: 1. This debut does something unforgivable, which you touched on in your review: it takes the entire focus of the debut off the group and the individual girls and puts it on JYP (the guy) and JYP (the company). The ENTIRE conversation around this debut before it came out was about JYP's direction as a company, how soon it was to be debuting a new girl group after ITZY, how ITZY has been treated by their company, how this might impact TWICE, etc. And now that it's been released, the entire conversation is about the artistic direction of JYP (the company) and whether JYP (the guy) is at this point in an Emperor's New Clothes situation. 2. JYP (the company) has been trend chasing for way too long, and this is just the latest and most egregious example. They pretty clearly thought ITZY would ride the wave of what was cool at the time, not apparently grasping that the girl crush market was already pretty saturated when they debuted (no hate to ITZY, I'm a fan), and now they're trying to out-SM SM and more specifically out-aespa aespa and it's not bloody working. Some SM groups and SM songs are aggressively weird and they're not afraid to make challenging pop, but you can always say for an SM release or SM group that there was a clear concept going in, even if it's a weird one. Nobody familiar with them (even casually) would have a hard time describing aespa's concept, even if their music and videos are unusual and not to everyone's taste. JYP (the company) apparently can't tell the difference between a collection of surface-level conceits and an underlying cohesive vision. They can see that something works in other people's finished products but apparently can't identify _why_ it works or the factors that _make it work_. And here we are. (Also? Overworking TWICE and treating your other girl groups as science experiments is no way to run a company.)

If you'd just take a look at JYPE history then all of your points would be deemed invalid. For over a decade, JYPE has been producing GGs with an average of 3yrs gap and each group has been/would still be doing fine. None of whom has the same concept which explains why jype might have pushed for a very different route for NMIXX as all of the "normal" concepts had been taken by their previous artists and that's just a no-no for the company. And overworking Twice, really? Even 2PM and Wonder Girls did more than them during their active years, you'd never hear a fan or artist call that as being overworked. Projects = profit and opportunity to express their artistry. Don't take that chance away from Twice by claiming they're "overworked" when they're not.

Wow, your #2 points - finally someone putting out the words that I needed to say. I just wanna say, JYP has always tried to copy or at least replicate whatever's the current trend and for some reason this one time they failed with NMIXX debut. I'm anticipating but also scared because the group introduced their song as "a new genre" "mix pop" which they are trying to put forward (also it's never new and already done by SM wayy before) in their future releases and imagine similar ones like this - omg. JYP needs to wake up.

All the cover videos they released a few months back really showed how promising this group is and there isn't one weak member. Every single member has great vocals (especially Lily, shes a beast when it comes to singing) but the song is like 70% rap talking for some reason. I also wish it was able to showcase each girl better because a lot of them have great stage presence. I think Lily and Kyujin stood out a bit but Jinni was barely noticeable imo and she is one of the most charismatic performers. Not to mention the song is just bad. I'm not giving up though. Hopefully JYP listens to all the criticism and their comeback is a bop because the members are way too good to have bad imitation sm songs.

I mean this groups fans are very quick to compare this song to Next Level and calling the changes to their "beat drop" moment but the vocal production of Next Level was so rich with every member manipulating their vocals to fit the rhythm of the song and that what stuck in our heads. Here, it just feels like they are talking singing with absolutely no constructive transition. The "beat drop" in Next Level is abrupt but it makes a sense through the "aespa story of ae" and the transition is supposed to indicate a different dimension. Yet SM is able to bridge the contrasting transition through their vocally string artist which becomes easier for us to digest.

Also something you’ll notice is a lot of fans are pointing out similar imagery from this mv to the mvs of many other popular 4th gen groups. At last a reaction that tells it like it is. Far too many have gone “Ooh experimental music, I love experimental music, this is great” without seeming to actually LISTEN to the song. It’s a mess. I’ve heard it a number of times now and it does not get any better. PD is right, nobody stood out and that’s a crying shame because, having seen the pre-promotion clips, they have some very talented vocalists and that just didn’t come through. I hope JYP learn lessons from this and they come back with something that showcases their talent. Don’t get me wrong, experimental music can work (Sticker, Next Level and Ring x Ring spring to mind) but here JYP have tried to do something without really knowing what the goal was. Let’s hope the girls are better served next time around.

As a composer/producer and classical musician, I totally agree with everything PD said. As a debut song, no one really stood out, except Lily - because of her vocals, some girls even got a decent amount of lines yet felt like they had none. I really don’t know what happened with JYPE here because the mixing of the vocals make them sound squeaky placed in the parts for the girl crush part which kinda doesn’t meld. The reason also why people really feel it is a mess because it has a form structure that’s ABCDBE. Basically, only one part repeats. That’s the thing with music, repetition induces familiarity, and this “song” really only did one, so people weren’t really given the time to digest the song. Having 10 composers makes sense since they can work on the song separately, but if you think about a similar song like the way aespa handled “Next Level”, there was still repetition in the structure (the hook is given) but like there are sections that repeat. Have to commend JYP for this as it screams *budgeeeeeet* and the girls are talented, but it feels like it is more of NMISS rather than NMIXX, as it was a missed opportunity and a waste of talent. I agree with PD that we push art further by experimenting, in classical music it’s pretty easy to get away with messing with the structure but for pop, man, it still is pop, it needs to be consumed by a lot of people, I really appreciate what they did, but maybe in the future, we will look back to this song and say “They started this trend” but who knows? 🧐
@diddle16752 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you said something about the vocals. The vocals sound VERY oddly mixed amongst the backtrack. And jype normally has great, I mean really great mixed vocal tracks. That was one the aspects that stood out to me the most especially in the girl crush sounding parts. Producer here as well.

Also the fact that jype plagiarized things to fit into this group is horrible.. from imagery and concepts to a whole STORYLINE has me kind of angry actually, none of it is the group's fault but the fact that jype has the audacity to do this and possibly get away with it is so sad for the groups who worked hard from smaller companies and had their work stolen. I'm so tired of groups using words in other languages (like the baila baila part) just to sound "cool" or "different" when they don't even bother with the pronunciation. For example, I'm spanish and when I heard the baila baila part I thought "wow whatever they are saying in korean sounds really ugly, I wonder what it means" so I looked it up and turns out it was SpAniSh. And it's not only about pronunciation, sometimes they just throw random words that don't even make sense in the song. I'm not trying to gatekeep a language but damn, for me it just ends up sounding really cringey and bad.
@moonchild95782 жыл бұрын
Personally I get excited when I hear even a word in my native language (which is spanish) in a song but I agree with the pronunciation part. These are small details I know but its still something I fix in my head when I hear it: In alcohol free when momo is naming off drinks my biggest complaint was that she said "pina colada" instead of piña colada when really Korean speakers should have no problem when pronouncing the ñ bc its such a common sound in Korean words. With loco, the word should've been loca and even then the lyric "im getting loco" is sung in the context of being translated directly to English and it makes sense, but to a spanish speaker grammatically the sentence doesn't make much sense. In o.o the i in baila is completely ignored and instead "bala" is heard which means bullet. There's nothing wrong with mixing in other languages but there should definitely be at least one fluent person double checking the context and pronunciation of the word(s) used
@Gothlolita72 жыл бұрын
Sadly this has been the norm for a very long time, with broken English that makes no sense as well. It was especially bad in 2nd gen when most idols couldn't speak English at all. Even worse when groups had an actual native English speaker for a member and they would still be forced to pronounce it wrong. I'm guessing they didn't think Koreans would be able to recognize Spanish or that it's not being pronounced correctly? It's a shame, it takes minimal effort to double-check, especially with how available pronunciation guides are online.

I have been hearing this song all day and sorry for NMIXX but i still dont feel this song at all. The only part that makes sense in this song is the middle part where it switches to a rock type of song, but the last chorus interrupting that part felt very abrupt and it was not a smooth transition at all (also, i really wasnt feeling the singing style at the start either, the tone they used was just... too childish? Like a little kid making fun of you). I really hope their comeback is better but this debut let me dissapointed (i also dont really enjoy Tank, their bside, but it's definitely more consistent that O.O) Edit 1: To add, i REALLY love songs changing genres mid song or anytime (examples like I Got a Boy by SNSD or a more new one, Next Level by Aespa), but this was way too much and i feel like JYP tried experimenting too much on a barely new group, i hoped they gave this song to any group they have and just make it a hit or miss comeback, but this is a DEBUT, like PD said i couldnt recognize or get familiar with their voices, everyone just sounded similar or just didnt get that "unique" factor in their voices YET. Edit 2: Ok can i say that the MV lowkey also makes no sense? SM is a pioneer and whether I like to admit it or not, is still setting trends in the Korean music industry today. It seems JYP is following suit in the experimental mixes in song production as well, but they just have not gotten the formula down yet with NMIXX. I hope that it just goes up from here for them. None of the girls stood out in their own debut song.. the only one who kind of stood out for me was a lily, but that’s really because I watched a few of her pre-debut videos and was looking for her in the video. If I had seen nothing about this group prior to this music video, I wouldn’t be able to point out any one of them as standing out to me for any reason. I hate to say it but it also does feel like they were going after an SM type song structure, and it didn’t really work for me, there were no real transitions between the sections of the song and there was barely any time to breathe when listening to it, the song was pretty much high energy the whole time. They really should have taken the middle part and made it it’s own song, I LOVED Lily’s voice during that part and the melody she sang when they were In those colorful dresses

Worst debut ever, period. JYP tried way too hard to be SM. Normally in SM MVs, you hear them kind of slow themselves down or build themselves up into a flow change whereas in this MV, they did it so abruptly that it totally killed the vibe, not to mention that long pause in between the change of flow which is what killed it for me, which is a shame because I really loved the middle part of the music video and would’ve just wished for that to be a standalone MV. Just stick to what you’re good at, because how did we go from ITZY’s Dalla Dalla, one of if not the best girl group debuts ever, to NMIXX O.O, dubbed the worst song of all time. Godspeed and hope the next comeback isn’t this terrible.
