I don't believe they are underrated at all. They are more experimental and do not consistently put out "mainstream" pop style songs to get the 100m views you probably think they deserve. This is a group that puts out music that ages like fine wine, second best vocal GG after Mamamoo.

i think the concept is that they're breaking in to the station to help the 'monsters' be seen in a better light. thats what i got from their preview film with the support group where the girls say they're gonna help everyone be accepted. i think this comeback really sold me on purple kiss as a group tbh. i love this quirky horror almost billie eilish inspired in terms of vocals and beats concept. we got it a little bit with zombie but now its all there in beautiful glory.

Yeah so the woman with the black hair and dress was acting as the “witch” on the show that was being broadcast by the broadcasting company they broke into. The people in blue were making it seem as though the objects they were holding were floating from the witch (like a green screen suit but blue). And the sitcom-looking show (along with the talk show) was making the witch and person with the many eyeballs seem weird/evil. The real witches (Purple Kiss) wanted to liberate themselves, and the other nerds, and show the world that they may be Nerdy, but they’re not bad, so they took over the broadcast and made everyone dance.

The Korean lyrics are written “I’m a weirdo 덕 who let the 덕 후.” (Spacing included, I believe.) They’re playing with 덕후 (deokhu), which is otaku/geek. The first half of the line could be referring to being the ugly duckling if you want to interpret 덕 by itself as duck. But otherwise, they’re just playing with deokhu. It’s not a mistranslation per se, but it definitely is way too literal. I can also see how a translator might not know what to do with that line if they’re given the lyrics with zero context. Honestly, I appreciate that line after realizing that it fits well with the theme of just being your nerdy self. (Coming from someone who was made fun of for being an otaku in high school lol.)

purple kiss never fails to amaze me, their concept is so fresh and quirky but also really pleasant to watch/listen to. it also looks so natural of them doing their concept, they are really made for this and that alone is so cool because it automatically makes you enjoy it even more because seeing them having fun at what they are doing is really refreshing in their industry

I love Nerdy a lot bc of the strings and interesting use of real sounding instruments. It's fun and a little quirky/silly. Moonbyul was the one who said Purple Kiss should continue with the witch concept idea, and I'm so glad RBW listened to her! The story line is very interesting so far, and I look forward to see how it'll continue next.

THIS is the direction that Purple Kiss should literally cement with themselves, like I can't describe the exact niche but they're perfect for this quirky, unique late 80s, campy horror concept. The type of, nostalgic, safe entertaining horror that you would see in classic Scooby Doo and Courage The Cowardly Dog cartoons. Nerdy is literally an electro swing song and I've always wanted a song of this genre from the girls! Zombie was the beginning of this quirky horror concept, it was an excellent masterpiece with the 80s arcade aesthetic with 70s disco funk influences sprinkled through the song. I hope they continue this niche, like Nerdy, Zombie and Pretty Psycho are CLASSICS already. All the best to these girls, they deserve a HUGE following, be it underground or mainstream.

The Disney-esque, quirky horror vibe makes me think of things like Beetlejuice and Hocus Pocus. I wonder how long before they do a murder mystery 'whodunit' concept like Clue or Knives Out? An alien abduction spoof? Or a goofy haunted house like Scooby Doo? They could even pull the mask off the ghost at the end and have it be someone from Mamamoo 🤣

I didn't know about this group before randomly catching this MV on KZbin, and I was an immediate stan. I went back and listened to their entire discography, their other MVs, all of it. I now know all their names, and I'm all in. Aside from my eternal group BTS, Purple Kiss is now my top group and easily pushed my prior top girl group, Blackpink, to the wayside. For me, it was 110% effective. I also really love that the slightly more subdued studio version makes for easier listening, while giving them room to really kill it on the live performances. Some groups can't ever live up to the studio version on stage- Nerdy looks better every time I see it and each time is better than the studio version. 11/10, I love it, and I want MORE Purple Kiss now!

The short films they did for "Memem" were good, but the ones this time around were on another level. The quality was good enough that if they decided to made a running series of the short films I feel they would go over very well.

I think it is a good thing they don't go for that massive drop into a "loud" chorus. Blackpink has that market cornered. This is a very RBW approach to a song, where things are more subtle and textural rather than brutal and dynamic. Both are fun.

7:00 maybe not concept wise, but sound wise, Nerdy is litteraly Midnight Circus by Sunny Hill ^^ But I agree, I think RBW ent. is pretty genius, they are lucky to be the "2nd to come" theory. The 1st to come is the one who creat a path, experiment, and start from cratch creating a "new audience" wanting more of the concept, here Dreamcatcher (to me, Vixx didn't stay enough in the horror concept to have really created a new concept, like if we think kpop horror, DC is in the front). Purple kiss, by coming 2nd, "take advantage" to the path created by DC, gathering attention to the people that got used to the GG horror concept and want more.. But unlike PinkFantasy and Pixy that, still didn't achieved to distinct themselves completly from DC (pixy a little more though), Purple kiss already achived that by using an emplty space in the ocean that is kpop concepts : "the cute-ish horror" To summerise : Dreamcatcher = fantasy horror Purple Kiss = cartoon/parody horror Pixy = dark horror

I actually feel like this is a song that works best within the entire album they released. Like, yes, it has to stand on its own for promotion in Korea (and I think it has on the live stages), but the entire Geekyland mini album was one of the only albums of the year that I have put on repeat beginning to end without skips or shuffle. Can definitely understand why some people aren’t feeling it as much, but the full album elevates it in my opinion (plus summer rain is excellent and not to be missed).

i love rbw's direction with this mainly because there are already tons of so-called summer queens and kings in kpop. meanwhile, pk's music is perfect for halloween like they HAVE to be on the playlist. dc's dark concept is a lot more general so i think pk found a niche for themselves which is for those who love creepy and seemingly childish horror. also they're definitely making it halloween everyday for me

I’ve recently realised purple kiss is giving so much of the kind of music I want from kpop. Pretty psycho is one of my favourite songs. I wish nerdy had used more of the violin(?) instrumentals throughout the song. You can hear them in the verses and went wild for those 5 seconds in the bridge but I wish they’d gone bigger with it, in the chorus too. I think a lot of what I want from this song, pretty psycho delivers on. And that song already exists. But I still wish there was more instrumentals.

This has definitely been my favourite Purple Kiss comeback. I really love this idea and sound, and they do it very well. I like that they're also linking it to real world discrimination, to an extent - they're clearly standing up against bullies and I've seen takes on the "witches" and "freaks" being metaphors for neurodivergent people, which is a concept I both appreciate, and think it's clever to focus on. I would like to see them let loose a bit more vocally, especially as they clearly have the skills for it, and I've only really got that in Meme, which probably departed the most from the quirky horror sound. I also wouldn't mind going back occasionally to the purer horror of Ponzona, because I really enjoyed that, but I think this version works best for them. It's really great to get your insights, as it makes me notice things I've missed, or wouldn't even think of, like how the moving shots emphasize the quirkiness. I was so excited when I saw the notification for this come up, as I'd been wondering what you'd think of it. Purple Kiss is the first group I've followed since pre-debut and I've always enjoyed your reactions to them especially. Thanks for putting this out there for us!

I agree that this was the comeback that made me realize they were staying with this sort of unique, subdued sound and the quirky horror concept. After following their pre-debut solo trailers and eventually their full group releases, I thought they were gonna be another group like (G)I-DLE or Loona that tries to explore a new sound and concept with each comeback. Honestly, that seemed really promising to me and I was beginning to think they could potentially become my favorite 4th gen girl group (also taking their all-rounded talent into account). I still am impressed by them but I was surprised that they seemed to stick with the horror concept. However, I still do think they’ve explored different genres every cb while maintaining that Purple Kiss sound which I love. I hope it works out for them! They’re easily in the top 10 (if not top 5) most talented 4th gen ggs and definitely one of the most unique.

for me, both the song and mv were 10/10 but i see where you're coming from!! tbh though, purple kiss's music is just PERFECT for me; they're the only artist (not just in k-pop but all over) who's songs i never skip because i genuinely adore every song they've made so far, so i'm a bit biased!! i also really really love the camp-y/quirky horror vibe they've done a couple of times now when it comes to concepts, and with how incredibly talented they all are, i'm truly never disappointed!! also, i highly recommend checking out story films!! i highkey adore the ones they did for memeM and geekyland (and there's continuity too!!!) and i really recommend watching them (and not necessarily for a reaction btw i just think they're really enjoyable to watch!!)

Life got in the way and I missed the last two Purple Kiss comebacks and only just caught up. I was super curious where they were going with their concept, Zombie was a surprise to me for sure! As a Somnia, Im pretty comfortable and happy with the horror concept, and I'm pleased to see other groups feeling comfortable with exploring it, and Purple Kiss' take on it is so far pretty damn fun. I really enjoy this group and they're sliding into my multistan list, they have some *amazing* voices on this team and overall they're pretty great. I agree they could have gone a little 'more' with the song, but I respect that they're staying within the feel they want to cultivate, too. Im glad that they're with rbw, and have a great 'big sister' in MMM, I hope they have continued growth and success!

I think the concept is great, I love it the whole aesthetic very and even sound of the music reminds we very much of zombie era. I also agree with you PD that Dosie, Chaein and Ireh stood out in the MV. But in my opinion, in terms of the music I definitely prefer Ponzoña and Memem as I love how hard they go musically.

I think you understand the story behind the MV more if you watch their 2 story films released prior to the MV... it is about 7 witches who were in hiding, because of their peculiarities, coming out and being free, along with helping other "freaks" get recognised as normal and valid, in a world controlled by "normal" humans... and the title "Nerdy" also adds into that, loudly vocalising that being a nerd is okay

What I found missing was mostly in the chorus. The catchphrases and the da-da-di, na-na-ni sounds make it feel a little bit empty. Notice when they sing "I love myself" and they leave that last syllable just hanging and then abruptly pick the melody back up. The instrumental of the song is top notch and what carries the song into something that is very enjoyable, relaxed and fun. Also, I think that post-chorus is not going to be for everyone since it didn't go hard enough (as PD mentioned), it kept the tone of the song same to keep that funky, nerdy, almost psychedelic vibe from the chorus. It was a nice surprise for me. I began to really like Zombie with consecutive listens, so will definitely listen to this more.

I dont really get the impression they are fully understanding the way english speakers use "nerdy".. because it really just feels like a random word to include.. It took me a few listens before I totally fell in love with this, but now I think it's great. I had been very much looking forward to you reaction and really liked it. I hadn't noticed the misdirecting the security guards before. I think the odd angle of a lot of the shots is intended to be them looking up at the security cameras. A commenter on another channel said the duck who lyric is the subtitler's mistake. That a Korean word for otaku sounds like duck who, and that's what she's saying.

Loved ur review as always. Ur expressions are a mood. Also, if you haven’t already, I would highly recommend checking out Purki’s Storyfilms. They’ve done them for the past 2 comebacks and they are so great, both in narrative and in film making. I am not a film maker so I don’t know the technique but they certainly put a lot of money and effort into making them clever and beautiful to look at. The members’ acting is really great in them and they are fun to watch both on their own and to find out more about their storyline. I would love to see a KZbin reaction to those but that’s probably something more along the lines of ur Patreon stuff. Or ofc if you just want to watch them on your own time. Either way I highly recommend them!

Love the channel. Lots of great stuff. Thanks for the excellent work! Before this comeback, Purple Kiss was not a group that I was paying a lot of attention to, but this song totally changed that. Dig the strings in the arrangement. Only thing is that, other than Yuki, the vocals of the other members blend together. Minor issue though. One of my favorite songs of 2022.

Watch Midnight Circus by Sunny Hill if you haven't yet, PK built upon that concept and sound. Sunny Hill in particular had a creepy circus concept paired with similar instruments like the playful violin, PK in Nerdy are doing a similar yet reimagined and modernized younger version of the concept. While SH's concept included a centuries old traveling circus, PK are modern yet still referencing classic midcentury horror with Village of the Damned and Addams Family.

i love the song and music video so much! for me the song was a bit underwhelming at first too but i cant get it out of my head now its amazing. I was interested in their concept since the beginning and im glad that they keep doing their own thing concept and music wise and grow into a group with a unique discography
