Tbh, this has to be one of my favourites out of the whole english kpop releases. I liked it immediately on the first listen, but now I am OBSESSED with it! It is so unapologetically 'kpop' and especially 'Twice'. I recon this must be how korean speaking people feel when they listen to literally every original Twice song and for me to be able to experience that same feeling (lol) is wild to me!

That’s the thing about the western market that I think more kpop companies should realize. Sometimes you don’t need to sound exactly like an “American” song to do well. what warms my heart even more is that the girls put in so much work to finesse their pronunciations! they had zoom calls with the vocal directors and coaches to guide them through the recording process and pronunciations. In terms of natural, organic progression of a group, TWICE is definitely the group that’s best example of that. When they moved from a cute to more of a more mature concept, it wasn’t jarring for everyone. I feel the same way about their English debut. It doesn’t sound like it was someone else’s song or they were trying too hard to fit into the western sound. This was a very solid introduction to the western audience and I love this song a lot.

Twices "I can't stop me" is actually one Korean to English song that I liked the English better. But I can't think of any other examples of translated songs that I personally liked better than the original. As an English speaker, when it comes to music, lyrics are the last thing I relate to when I'm listening to a song. I also grew up listening to classic music so I'm not sure if that changes anything but what makes a song "good" to me, is the ability to translate emotion through the chords of every instrument including the voice. The lyrics usually just adds a dimension that I will look up if I feel like I need to understand the song better, and I do that with English songs too. The Feels did such a fantastic job at keeping the musicality of twice, especially with their vocals. There's no way I could mistake this song for any other group. I'm so impressed with this (even though I wish Jeonyeon had more of a presence but I understand why she didnt).

I agree with you on how they didn't compromise their sound for this english single. With a lot of kpop english songs, they may draw a western crowd but when people listen to the artists other songs, they sound nothing like the eng. single. With Twice's The Feels, you can easily recommend 5-10 Twice songs that have a similar sound. Baby Blue Love and Up No More were just released over the past year and fans of The Feels would love those songs! THIS is how you build a western audience!!! As a once, I'm so happy Twice stayed true to themselves for this song. It's why I and a lot of other westerners fell in love with their music in the first place.

I loved The Feels and the most interesting part for me was that I didn't know it was a full english song and I didn't even realize it until the end. To me The Feels just sounded a perfect korean pop/Twice song. And I can still see this song being sold as a good american/western-ish pop song. It's the best result possible for this.

But it's looking like they might get a hot100 debut, which is huge for a group who is sticking to a musical style/image that isn't big in the west. I'm glad they stuck with who they are. 19:52 To answer your question, I am Thai, I don't know any Korean words, and have been a Once since Cheer Up era. So having an English song makes me feel more connected in a way that I can sing and understand the lyrics more. I love to sing on the Smule app, which is like a karaoke app, which I've struggled a lot in singing and pronouncing Korean words. 'The Feels' is THAT song that it will remind you of their early era, which I missed a lot. But as a Once, I feel like this song (them releasing an English song) isn't that necessary. But I also understand that they want to expand their listeners. So I don't mind them releasing more English songs. But that will mean that they will probably be overworked again (Because now they will have Korean, Japanese, and English comebacks), but I also don't want them to prioritise the English comeback more than their Korean comeback.

Collapsedone work for jype for a decade now i believe.. Lol he's been there since wonder girls era. And he also co wrote a lot of twice title track with jyp pdnim. Also alot of twice's bside too.. That's why its sound so twice, bcs he work with twice sooo many times. He's also fluent in english, and stay in united States. I personally admire his songs so much. you're right when you say this is just a twice song in English, that is totally why I just liked it with no level of cringe or concern of how it is going to be perceived like I have with so many Kpop western debuts. Personally though, having been listening to kpop for so long, I would have liked it the same if it had been in Korean rather than English but I understand why these companies try to release English songs. A large part of what sells a song is the earworm, right? the bit that you can't stop singing to yourself, so by making a song in English you are able to stick that earworm into a lot more people's heads without the language barrier holding it back from that. They'll hear it on the radio, remember 'boy i boy I boy I know' or 'I know I get the feeeeels' so much more easily than a language foreign to them and it will make them come back to it, buy it on itunes, etc etc

I'd say Korean releases hit harder mainly due to the fact that Korean phonetics sound so pleasing to the ears. Members didn't have to change their voices and tones and especially their twice sound. I basically like everything about this single. The mv and concept were also fantastic. I think some advantage might be that Mina and Changkyun speak english, but so do other artists in groups doing english songs and it doesnt always work. They just feel very authentic.

Even from just the spoilers, it felt like it was going to be a very TWICE-like release and I am so happy that they kept their sound. From the start I was drawn to their sound, colour and image which I found was just so fun and intoxicating. Even after all these years, their music has only grown and evolved but not completely change and as a ONCE, I'm so happy that the Feels was no different. The Feels just felt like another excellent addition to their giant collection of fun and high energy releases and not something off-brand to try to match North American music taste. As someone who can only speak English, it is nice to be able to (Correctly) sing along with my favorite artist. Especially since I’m not a huge fan of when songs are converted to English, this is nice because it was made to sound this way specifically

Twice had talked about how they wanted to connect with their English speaking fans while also being authentically Twice! They pulled it off flawlessly :) I think the difference between this song and other English songs that they did it to appeal to their fans rather than the American market.

the english is awesome, it has some interesting turns of phrase (i love tzuyu's good im ready aim and fire is my fav.) to be honest it sounds so much like twice that i was about 6 listens in and i realized its all in english!

Something i noticed is the Nayeon and Jihyo perform it slightly different on live performances the ‘i got all the feels for sure’ and ‘never let it go oh oh’ parts. On the ‘go’ and ‘sure’ parts it sounds better the way they sing it in the live performances imo.

what really amazes me is that the fact that TWICE is growing or moving into a more mature concept every CBS (KR and JP), but they go back to the theme where they became famous ( cheer up, TT, etc.) for me it is really great because this is an English debut and the way that they introduce themselves to the global audiences that says "this is what TWICE sounds like".

oh yeah i totally get the "more connected to the song because it's in english" part. as a once i don't really mind whether the song is in english, korean, or japanese, it still hits home because it's twice but rn it gave me an avenue to blast a twice song confidently as people here really does tune out when they hear korean lmaooooo

I literally didn't even notice that Dynamite was all in english until like my fourth or fifth listen, so yeah it doesn't really make much of a difference for me personally what language it's in so long as it's a bop

The Feels is much better than Alcohol-Free IMO. I love how they did retro again, I Can't Stop Me is one of my favorite songs of Twice. But tbh this Music Video looks a bit on the lower budget side compare to the other Twice's music videos, but I guess it's understandable since this is their first attempt at the western market. The song itself is very addictive and makes you want to dance.

For me actually it didnt really hit me differently. Like youve said. It feels like a twice songs. I still love it. But i do prefer their korean songs better. I feel like what i like about in kpop general is more of the experience of actually learning what they are singing. Like i have to look it up and such and i think thats what got me really hooked into kpop more. Cause i actually realize like it isnt much but im actually making efforts to understand the meaning of the song even its on another language cause you like the song that much.

I totally agree with you. I love that TWICE went for something that so clearly screams TWICE, and it absolutely works! The song is highly reviewed, earning a 5 star rating by NME, it's just debuted in the top 5 of US Digital Song Sales as the first JYPE song to do so, gave Twice their highest entry on Hot 40 Singles New Zealand, debuted on 29 on Japan Hot 100 without physicals and with 2 days of tracking, debuted them on the Billboard Spain Digital Song Sales chart, and has given them their debut on the UK Digital Singles Chart. In addition it's also predicted to debut on Hot 100 (fingers crossed). All these achievements show so clearly that the song is the perfect way for TWICE to break into the international market. It doesn't push away their original audience, it just invites in new people who will appreciate TWICE for who and what they are.

Yes! Signal is their least liked song by a lot of fans but it’s also what got me into twice. That song is so out of pocket you can’t help but be intrigued. It has unique sound that hooks you in after a few listens.

"Hit bullseye" isn't correct? I would say 'I hit bullseye' without the 'a'... Then again my boyfriend and I also have different takes on how to say "catch a cold" or "catch cold" when you get sick. I know I've seen some people saying they weren't impressed with this song at all, but I really loved it. It's so fun and cute - I wished for more cutesy prom stuff but the MV is really growing on me. The song was great either way though. The 'burn book' also made me laugh. Idk if that's what they were aiming for with that scene but I liked it.

As someone that know just basic Korean words I've learned mostly through kpop... I honestly didn't notice it was in English until Bris pointed it out LOL. I didn't know the song was coming out, either, and watched it first on his channel. I've also been a fan of Twice even when they were on that reality show where the members were chosen (blanking on the name right now), so I don't know if it's really possible to feel more connected to their songs since I love most of them? Their debut is still one of my all-time fave songs, so I'm more just happy for them than anything and extremely impressed with this song. Most of them don't seem as comfortable with English as quite a few other groups, so I mostly feel like they must've worked their butts off to make this song pretty much perfect.

OH MY GOODNESS YES YES YES!!! I don't know what say except WOW WOW WOW! Seriously everything about it the Jihyo Visuals and her outfits were Insane and don't get me started on the Vocals, Nayeon went off on the Vocals and her Visuals Wow, Jeongyeon was just STUNNING and did you see that eye brow piercing like Wow, Momo was absolutely Gorgeous and her Vocals just again Wow, Sana went crazy on the Vocals her Rap like What and don't get me started on that wink, Mina just was so Elegant but also Hot at the same time like I don't know and Vocals, Dahyun went crazy on the Rap Vocals were Insane and her Visuals WOW WOW, Chaeyoung WENT OFF the Vocals Rap and her Visuals were just Wow, Tzuyu didn't get as many Lines but her Visuals and Vocals were INSANE! The Feels is unmistakenly Twice through and through. It rides that fine line of cute but not too cute, catchy but not kitschy, fun but not over the top. It's that Twice sound that is often imitated, never duplicated. The Feels isn't a song that was made to appeal to the English speaking audience, The Feels is simply a Twice song that has English lyrics.

Same. I like BTS and I’m happy they’re getting bigger and bigger every time and getting even more recognition, but I miss Blood Sweat and Tears and Fake Love eras. It was their best eras. Liked their songs before that and liked their songs after that. But since Dynamite it just isn’t the same :/

I agree on the point that they are very much risk averse when it comes to their newer songs these days I mean they don't really have to prove their versatility as they have done it already a lot of times but I am starting to miss that BTS whom had a certain edge over the other Kpop groups A reason why they became big at first place was because they were more focused on Raps among the Kpop groups which is slowly declining Also the rapline are getting much more pushed back I feel Obviously I still absolutely loved both DYNAMITE & BUTTER but this is what I feel about the current BTS BE still is a saving grace and LGO is still one of my favorite KPOP release but yea

The first time that I listened to 'The Feels', I also thought that hey, they did not lose their sound despite it being a full English song and prolly catered to the west. It definitely is still a Twice song. The vibes is still Twice. They nailed it! It's so good, so catchy. I LOVE IT. As for their other songs, like the original Japanese songs, I love most of them - specifically 'Breakthrough'. There is a Korean version of it, but the original version sounds way better. Well, original version of the songs sounds waaaay better most of the time, like what you said. Love your reviews, PD!
