One thing I find disturbing about this trope (among the obvious) is the resolution. If all it takes to change a man is the "right woman," what does that say about men? Or the women who are trying to "change" them? It's an insidious, careful lie, one that encourages men to seek healing and fulfillment from an external source, and that condones women staying in destructive relationships in an effort to cure their partner of his bad behavior. And when that inevitably fails, rather than seeing men's insecurities and personal character defects as the source of their problem and encouraging men to fix them, it can end up placing the blame on women for not being the right one, saying the right things, etc. Of all the bad things the "Ladies' Man" trope teaches, I think this is perhaps the worst since it's so hard to see and so infrequently called out.

it's important to note that even though these men can be reformed by a monogamous relationship does not mean that it is a woman's responsibility to be this for one. that sort of thinking can lead to being stuck in a toxic relationship with a leech-like, manipulative boyfriend who pleas with you not to leave because you "make him a better version of himself".

I think that the main thing that this video gets wrong in the first place is that a monogamous relationship can necessarily "fix" anybody. The only way anybody can be fixed is to deal with their shit. Also, there are plenty of people who practice polyamory in a healthy way, with the informed consent of everyone involved. Finding "the one" isn't the end-all be-all.

@byMidnyt4 жыл бұрын
@@ShawnRavenfire Except the ladies man isn't a swinger. While on the surface they might appear similar, a deeper look will show that they are quite different. A swinger is going to say from the start: "this is what I am, this is what I am into." A ladies man wants to be the winner, he doesn't want to share. He will also actively avoid his female equivalent. There's an inherent dishonestly to the ladies man.

Midnyt Storme Absolutely agreed. If anything the ‘Ladies’ Man’ will be repulsed by an openly non-monogamous female and might even try and shame her into monogamy with him. If he “wins” her this way, he can promptly lose interest and continue conquering others.
@MrLisbethsalamander4 жыл бұрын
Donald draper is for me the most well-portrayed example of “the ladies man” because the series really go deep down the surface so you can empathise with him or at least understand why he does what he does. The think i loved is that mad men didn't chose the easy path trying to solve all his problems just with love, every time that he apparently finds “the right girl” who almost tamed him it doesn't last longer because the real problem is inside him and he could never be happy until he finally fights his demons.

Yeah, Mad Men deconstructs the Lady's Man. Don developed unhealthy attitudes about sex when he's raised in a brothel and loses his virginity to a surrogate mother figure at 15. He's not an enviable man's man; he's broken under the gleaming surface.

The toxic thing about this is that every romcom or other movie teaches girls that the ladiesman will magically wake up and see how special you are, even though their previous behavior is not right or respectful. So once he realises this, he will suddenly change. It does not matter if the lady in the movie sleeps with him very quickly, he will magically see her as she is because he realises she is the one? While in real life he will see her as a quick hookup and never calls her back. And if the lady does give her opinion, she is "stuck up", learns to relax and he will suddenly not chase all the women because she is the one. God, hollywood, step up your game! :P What about teaching girls to stay away from toxic people so they can learn that it will not attract good things.

@kshiftkometh seeing a lot of comments from you all over this video, armchair diagnosing practically every guy here... are you taking psychology in uni or something? You're authoritatively stating a LOT of things that are quite difficult to diagnose in real life and require a great deal of care when doing so because misdiagnosis can result in treatments that don't help or even make things worse, and pile on social stigma. This usually means actual professionals hedge their words and make measured guesses, especially given fictional men are just that, and have no real life to look deeper into for true answers. While people who are just learning all this stuff and common signs to watch out for seem much more likely to just start diagnosing practically every fictional character, as their brain is chewing on all these new ideas and warning signs and behavioural patterns... there's an element of Dunning-Kruger that can occur where one's own perceived expertise is at its highest when just beginning to learn more advanced concepts.

It’s interesting that movies’ reform of ladies men is almost always without them (finding the right one or maybe parenthood). Inferred solutions like this remind me of how movies insinuate women need a man or children to be happy. We need more ladies man reforms that end in single life with healthy relationships (not necessarily romantic) and healthy habits. Because pointing out a void and filling it with “the one” constantly may not be the solution for everyone.

I don't really believe in the 'reforming' of a ladies man. If a guy is too 'popular' with the women, I'm automatically uninterested, since I don't believe people really change, especially for someone. He might fall in love, be faithfull even, but eventually he'd get bored and turn back to his old ways. Guys don't change suddenly when they meet 'the one'. That's a fantasy. If a guy changes, it's because of his own reasons, for example, because he just ages out of the womanizing.
@sarizonana4 жыл бұрын
Roxy Woodward yeah sometimes being a ladies man is just a phase, a moment in their lives when when guys just don’t feel like engaging yet and go out with many women but are still not interested in something serious. There are ladies man that ofcourse will never change but I think for others it might just be a phase in their life and no the perfect woman won’t change him but a certain moment in their life might. Maybe like seeing all his friends are now getting married and is staying without company for the party or going out. With Tony Stark it wasn’t about Pepper being the right woman more like he went through Afghanistan and then the palladium poisoning which made him realize that he wasn’t in the mood for being a womanizer anymore
@Author.Noelle.Alexandria4 жыл бұрын
I know of one time, and one time only, where it worked in real life, and that's because the ladies' man wasn't an ass to women. All the girls but one wanted my dad, and all the guys wanted to be him. Good looking, athlete from a good family with some money, raised to be a gentleman, etc. The one who couldn't care less was my mother. She was pretty, but had not much else going for her. Criminal family, her siblings kept being arrested by my dad's dad and his fellow officers. Because she wasn't interested in offering herself on a silver platter, that intrigued him, and he made a real effort to get to know her and earn her friendship. It's interesting to me that, despite being raised with men always holding the door and such, things that aren't bad manners today, he twisted it into whoever gets to the door first holds it, regardless of the person's sex. He did right in teaching me and my brother than those gentlemanly ways applied to both of us since it was just plain the right thing to do. In the 80's and 90's this wasn't considered feminism since men were still expected to pay on dates and such, but it was.
@byMidnyt4 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on how he is "popular". I know a couple of guys that have dated around a lot, and they are very popular with the ladies, but I wouldn't classify them as ladies men. They are certainly not ready to settle down yet, but at the same time, are not actively opposed to the idea. Although I suppose from a distance, if they do find someone, it might appear to the outside that they were reformed. But these types are simply genuinely nice, outgoing people. There's an honesty and an authenticity in them that you simply don't see in the ladies man. I will say however, if the woman doesn't turn out to be "the one" she might misclassify him in hindsight out of anger or hurt. I think this is the true damage of the "reformed ladies man" trope. The ladies man actively perpetuates the idea that he is ready to settle down, this guy does not. If he tells her from the start that he's not ready to settle down, and she sticks around hoping he'll change, that's on her.

He just have to say he is looking for sex and not a deep relationship, monogamy or else and he just want a one night. If the guy is honest and the woman agree, then it’s fine! But ladies player like Don Juan, Casanova and others are ready to say and do anything just to have sex and don’t care if their actions hurts people. They are not honest in their intentions. I wouldn't say Tony Stark fits the "The right woman comes along and saves him" story line. There's a reason him and Pepper don't end up together in the first one, even if they both want to. Every single movie he's in, his arc is about bettering himself because he sees what he could become in the eyes of his villains, further realizing his flaws, and from that he builds a sense of responsibility for the people he can save that can't save themsleves. Tony's decade long arc is going from completely selfish to completely selfless, saying it's instead "he went from a playboy to a family man out of no where" isn't fair to all the build up (with and without Pepper) over the years.

Don Juan destroyed women, women proclaimed Casanova was joyful fun. Not all non- monogamous lifestyles are exploitive. Universal enforced chastity isn't justice nor is it enlightened.

It's almost like insecure people hate and pathologize members of the opposite sex who can have as much sex as they want, huh?
@dithaingampanmei4 жыл бұрын
Our society has always upheld trustworthy and loyal people, because they can create healthy environments. Man-sluts aren't doing anyone any favors with their dicking around, but they are unique in that they can even do so. For a man to be so attractive, that he's irresistible, is something statistically rare enough that its an unusual occurrence. For a woman to sleep around, isn't that difficult of a lifestyle to initiate. So all that "special factor" is absent. So society's default attitude towards non-committal individuals is activated upon her. 🤔just my theory.
@AdamRhodes5364 жыл бұрын
Because our society is one in which men approach women. When it comes to relationships, it is assumed that the man makes the first move. Therefore, he is the one that needs to appeal to her while she is the one that needs to be impressed. It's why pickup artists have the term "peacocking." Male peacocks use their plumage to impress females. All the woman has to do is say yes. So if a woman says yes to every guy that approaches her, she gets the reputation of being easy (to impress). inb4 someone says "mansplain"

@@ичо-й3п True, but you don't have to use other people for sex to be called a slut as a woman. But I'm not a Casanova or James Bond at all. My family and coworkers are shocked that I'm still single, but I'd rather make myself into someone worth dating first. If theres one thing l've learned from all these trope videos, is that everything is subjective, and that the writers and culture determine what is the problem and it's suggested solution. In this case, society says sleeping with many women is "bad" and the "solution" is to find "the one". At the same time, because of the new wave of feminism, it's strongly suggested that for females, the ability to sleep with many men is a sign of independence which will only strongly encourage it. So if everything is subjective, and society sets the tone of your narrative but in a way that forced you to toe the line, then you are much better placed to determine what you want to pursue. Unfortunately, everyone else is still under the matrix and will force you to return to the fold or shun you completely. TL:DR, being with one or many partners is not innately bad, it's society's current story and take that boxes you in. The guiding question for you should be, when l'm on my death bed, what will l remember fondly? (Runs to grab a bucket of condoms)

Always wondered why this trope works so well as an object of fantasy for female viewers. Is it that they think they can "tame" him? Are they eager to "win" the "competition" for his grace\affection\time? Do they assume he must hold some magical sexual prowess, through experience or otherwise? Do they actually want someone to lie to them, or are they so jaded at some point in life they figure everyone does, so they might as well? Or is it just the fact they pick handsome, articulate actors for the role with the best cliche writing available?

I’m a woman and if we don’t want to be shamed for our sexual behavior, why should we shame men into settling down when they don’t want to?
@kaitlyn__L4 жыл бұрын
The way I view it is these men are serial monogamists, not swingers or openly polyamorous. They are often also turned off by nonmonogamous women. It's about "the conquest", of "winning" at breaking down these desires - either at being "so desirable" they stop caring about monogamy, or that they get the woman to actually desire a full-on relationship with them. Plus of course this is about a trope in fiction, and the ways it plays out and objectifies people and stuff. It's not talking about real people in real life. In real life, someone can go on a lot of dates and charm a lot of people while being completely respectful, or they can have a bunch of one night stands and leave ruin in their wake as they don't properly prepare their one-off partners for what to actually expect. This is one way queer communities and our norms better serve the people involved, because people tend to be up-front about whether they just want to hook up for fun or if they want to go on dates and really get to know each other. Also polyamory is more known about and accepted, so what would be shameful secretive cheating in many long term straight relationships becomes spouse-sanctioned flings or hook-ups instead. This trope encourages straight men to put on the trappings of getting to know each other, in service of a goal of just hooking up. And the real men in real life who think this is to be imitated, such as Roosh or other PUAs, are proud about how they will say or do anything on a date just to fuck and then leave in the middle of the night. The idea of being upfront about wanting casual sex is seen as attracting "the wrong kind of woman" (or even just "whores"), so it's all inextricably tied up with slut-shaming cultural attitudes too. Fighting our own cultural shame for being free and sexual women also involves encouraging open communication between all parties and everyone being honest about what they want, and that's why these two things are not actually mutually contradictory IMO. If polyamory were more culturally accepted, someone still having the desire to experience first-time dates even while in the middle of a committed relationship, may be able to work things out in an open and respectful manner instead of sneaking them in with hotel rooms and layovers for business meetings, along with all the subconscious shame that secrecy brings. This secrecy, and the cultural expectation of monogamy, is what drives these narratives of "charming" many women in a row, but never being satisfied or fulfilled, or speaking to any of them again afterwards. And of course, in various queer worlds, it's more accepted to say to your two long term boyfriends "I'm going to go for some drinks with this cute boy I saw at the club the other night, maybe we'll bone!" and there's no secrecy or shame, it doesn't destroy relationships, or rely on manipulating the date....
@shrisiva40163 жыл бұрын
@@kaitlyn__L I disagree with you, agree with the original comment and this channel is portraying this in a biased way, I don't think men are certain they'll be in a relationship with a woman after a one night stand, and they have every right to not want to be with them after. Usually the women in the situation have made up a narrative in thier head how it'll play out and feel entitled to a relationship without telling him, which is why she feels devastated it doesn't play out the way she wanted. This is unfairly portrayed as the man's fault. That's not the man's fault. It's not like the woman was upfront about her intentions of wanting a relationship either and the man never stated or promised he wanted to either, so why is it his fault she expected something else? Women aren't owed relationships. I no reason why they have to "prepare" the women what to expect like a kid, when the women aren't expected to do this. Completely unfair double standard imo.

I kinda hate that this type of man has always been portrayed as sleazy or creepy and that the only out for him is either self-destruction or settling down and having a family. There's nothing wrong with men not wanting to settle down (just as there's nothing wrong with women not wanting to settle down). Some people are just not interested in that kind of commitment. A lot of these characters feel intentionally vilified, like their "reluctance" to settle down is something to be frowned upon.

I think in the case of Tony Stark, it wasn’t just finding the “right woman“ that made him change his ways: I think it was equal parts realizing the harm that he was causing by profiting off of violent conflicts, and discovering real purpose in helping people and the world.

"They call me Nova... As in, Casanova." Idk what movie that line was from but suddenly my mind was blown when I realized the book I'm currently reading has a character named Nova... He's an ally of the main female character (in a war in a fantasy world) but also kind of dictator-ish in his attitude, and she still swoons over how hot he is... Which makes it kinda obvious why his name is Nova.

You forgot the ladies man who loves women as a kind of short term straight gay best friend and actually don't believe in "the one" because a family life is simply not what they want. Being up front about that they aren't looking for something serious and is often used for women who have been closed off for various reasons, getting their romantic and sexual spark back, and after the fling is done, know what kinda traits the woman want in a serious partner she often ends up with.

I think the most interesting iteration of this trope for me is the subcategory of positively (ish) viewed ladies' men created by female authors, screenwriters, and directors. Ladies' men usually are the product of male wish fulfillment to some extent, so it's fascinating to see it co-opted by female creators, adapting it into female wish fulfillment. Fifty shades of grey was so popular because the fantasy wasn't a womanizer who does whatever he wants, but a man who magically acts on the exact fantasies and desires of the female lead. Of course, there are a lot of problems with those types of characters, but it's still fascinating to see what happens with positive female gaze on that trope.
@shrisiva40163 жыл бұрын
You it's "positive female gaze" when female writers do the exact same thing male writers do? Fifty shades of Grey still had the guy totally in control of her life and could do anything she wanted. How is that any different to ladies men who knew exactly what to say to charm women?
@gabrielvalerio39064 жыл бұрын
The cultural assault on man who wish to be free is the exactly opposite of what feminism is supposed to stand for. There's no point on shaming man for not wanting to live in a church and only have monogamic relationships, even though a decent chunk of these trope are over compensating loneliness, it is NOT fair to generalize it to all man who don't submit to the christian traditional model of man and woman relationship's.

So, sorry, lads...turns out you can't have complete Egalitarianism without Feminism.

What is interesting though about Don Juan is that a French writer, Eric Emmanuel Schmitt, wrote a theater play where Don Juan gets redemption through falling in love with a young man. Implying that he could never be satisfied with women partly because he was, probably, gay (or at least bi). This version is the romantic gay af theatre play that I had been waiting for lmao.

You didn't mention the best ladies' man redemption movie out there: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Even when he literally earns "The Power of Love", true love for the right girl, he still can't win against Gideon, he still loses. He can succeed only when he earns " The Power of Self Respect" and takes accountability for his mistakes, for being a cheating ladies' man and hurting every girl he's ever been with. Watching it for the first time I was baffled why a character so in love with himself would need even more self respect, but then I understood that he didn't have any. He was in love only with his distorted view of himself, but he never had enough self respect to confront his true, messy persona

There's rarely ever one side at fault for these stereotypes. Theyre like black holes where something has to feed it in order for it to survive. While men are responsible for their own actions and how they treat women, the other side of the coin is that within the spectrum that is women (and men), there are some who continue to feed reward to these people. Thats a hard sell in today's age where everything is polarized into black and white, but that is the reality that consistently plays itself out. Good vid.

If I recall correctly, and it has been a long time since I watched Mad Men, but Don Draper avoids this cliché by not ending up with "the one" but instead finding himself, through accepting and dealing with is vulnerability, at a wellness retreat and by connecting emotionally with another man at the retreat (the whole refrigerator analogy).

My absolite favorite "Ladies man" is Dr. Christian Troy from Nip / Tuck. I always thought of him as an antihero. Portrayed as flawed but also stable in his ways. Throughout the series he deals with death, loss, fatherhood, all due to his many female lovers. So much baggage and in the end, he never truly changes. And he sort of recognizes he is doomed and he accepts it anyway. anyway. I think a lot about relationships. I've had my own share of interactions but never anything long lasting. I sort of have always wanted to be the kind of man that can effortlessly be with many women. But I have found out that it is not in any way effortless. Being a ladies man IRL is like ballet. It seems effortless and many RL ones say it is easy, but the process of doing so involves more work than anything. You have to change your whole person and very few men are willing to put in effort to actually do it. But hey it is a goal to achieve one day before I die I suppose.

What baffles about HIMYM is that in HIMYM, when Barney Stinson reformed and renounced his 'Casanova' ways, instead of truly realising how extremely creepy he was to women, the director shows us he has changed by him policing other women's decisions... It would have been better character development if he REALLY thought about he creepy he was than berate other women for their choices...

Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond for a reason. Having the women be a character alongside him that can stretch over multiple movies, instead of just being a sex prop in one movie and forgotten the next has been such a breath of fresh air. I’ll be sad to say goodbye after Bond 25 💔
@sarizonana4 жыл бұрын
J2thePower0f3 but there is a problem with long time fans and this version of Craig makes me wonder if we are in the last years for this character. Okay it’s great they want to adapt the character to modern sensibilities but doesn’t doing it destroys the essence or the appeal of the character. Big part of why People loved that character is because. he was a ladies man and was always played by a handsome actor to make this believable now taking that out of him makes the character boring to the long time fans. I really wonder if Bond is an outdated character
@MsZephyra4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I had no idea. He just became less ugly to me, LOL
@J2thePower0f34 жыл бұрын
Sara Zonana I think Craig’s Bond is still a healthy amount of ladies man. You can love sex and being with many women and still show them respect-which I think they’ve balanced well with his portrayal. Daniel Craig presents him as being comfortable in his sexuality and masculinity that he doesn’t need to treat women as lesser. That alone makes him sexy IMO and I don’t feel he’s lost the characters essence by doing so 🤷♀️
@sarizonana3 жыл бұрын
@@J2thePower0f3 Craig is really good and definitely looks masculine but it’s not him treating women with respect which makes the character loose it’s essence but with the exception of Skyfall they are giving the character a serious Love interest in Madeline and before her Vesper.
@J2thePower0f33 жыл бұрын
@@sarizonana and that may be so for some fans. I think that just comes down to personal opinion. I personally love that he’s had a couple love interests span more than one movie. I feel it adds depth to his character. Even ladies men can fall in love every once and a while. Doesn’t mean he’ll end up with them forever, he just was interested them longer. I can see someone not liking it though if they prefer his MO of the past. To me, his full love for Vesper and how she betrayed him explains why he wouldn’t open himself up to that again in the future. And he didn’t really until after Skyfall, which is the movie where I feel he had the most personal growth about his past. So after that movie I would argue it makes sense that he might be more open again to a longer relationship with Lea Sedeoux’s character. It might be less bond-esque, but I personally find it more interesting as a character arc over his movies. They feel a lot more connected together.

Really good, as always. And. RE 15:25 - Ethical non-monogamy is becoming increasingly-accepted as it's more broadly practiced. Media hasn't quite caught up yet, and Hollywood's narratives still take monogamy as the norm, but in reality, fewer and fewer people are trying to just find "the One." I'm kind of surprised the toxicity of men depending on women to change them didn't get more attention here. Then again, a video can only be so long. But as before, this was a great video, and thanks for creating it.
@DarkPrject4 жыл бұрын
While the falling out of favor of this trope is a positive, the "finding The One and getting married trope" has its own problems, namely that it portrays the cisheteronormative monogamous vision of family as the only valid aspiration. As a gay, polyamorous, trans woman I find that problematic.

I've never seen the appeal of a "ladies' man" ... but a few ladies' ladies have gotten my attention. They seem less threatening I guess, a girl took me in her arms at the club once and complimented my dancing. She was very confident but it wasn't aggressive and she asked before she put her hands on my hips. I feel like even if someone is promiscuous and very confident they'll still be well-liked as long as they are respectful... but a lot of the characters in this trope see people as non-human conquests and that's disgusting.
