Fun fact: Don Bluth was originally gonna direct Ice Age. So it probably it might have been Land Before Time but with Cenozoic animals instead of dinosaurs.

Ironically ice age is basically like the land before time of the 2000’s: a prehistoric animal adventure movie that was great, but got dumbed down with the studio milking it.

It's hard to believe it's been 35 years already. This movie is an absolute masterpiece, easily the greatest film Don Bluth ever made. The animation, the characters, the tone and messages, it's all delivered so beautifully.

"It's just for kids" is just low. I'm happy you hold all the films you look at to a high standard no matter what. That's what makes you a good reviewer. Good work. I like this movie too. Judith Barsi's death is just so sad. I remember that after I watched this movie for the first time and wrote a review of it on Letterboxd I saw her name in the cast section. I confused her for one of the Olsen twins at first because when I though of famous young girl actresses, I thought of them, but when I searched her name on DuckDuckGo, and found out about the tragedy that unfolded on July of 1988, I started crying. As I read the Wikipedia article, the more and more I got sad. I'm now trying to watch all the movies she was in

One thing I have always loved about TLBT 1 is the Sharptooth, not just because he’s my favorite dinosaur but because of how they made him scary. If you look at the majority of his scenes, Sharptooth is shot with his right side towards us, where he lost an eye. Because we’re watching him with one eye closed, it further gives the impression that this monster is a killing machine who doesn’t need his eyes to hunt you down. God I love this movie!! 🦖

I have a theory that Ice Age is a spin off of The Land Before Time or was at least meant. Think about it. It was originally meant to be a Don Bluth movie, takes place in the Ice Age and has so many sequels

This film will always hold a place in my heart. This film handles such strong themes of grief and prejudice in a way that is so timeless. In my opinion I feel like it’s the strongest Don Bluth film. There will never be another film like the land before time. And I’m glad this video was given the right amount of respect by the best land before time fan I’ve seen.

Happy 35th Anniversary to one of the great animated films from our childhoods. Also on the topic of adult animated series, I'd like to think we are in the Golden Age of Adult animation. Aside from the ones you brought up there's Love Death and Robots, Murder Drones, Arcane, Pantheon, Legend of Vox Machina, and some really recent ones like Blue Eye Samurai and Scavengers Reign.

I agree with you , when I was a kid this film left a very impactful moment on me. Even when I nearly forgot it , I’d a lot of vivid dreams about these character and that I’d interact with them during there adventures and even find myself running for my life from carnivores. And when I found it again , I regained a new respect for it and enjoyed it and a lot of its sequels, and every time I think of Judith , I can’t help but wish she got the chance to live a life she deserved.

"The Land Before Time" was one of the first pictures I saw as a tot. I even remember when I got the VHS of it for Christmas. Believe it or not, Stone of Cold Fire and the Mysterious Island are great films from the original. In the song 'Always There' on Mysterious Island, Littlefoot sings about his mother for the first time since her death. I never understood that until some other fan pointed that out. Then Stone of Cold Fire teaches you the different beliefs of leadership or how it is governed among the adults. One of my favorite songs from that film that always drew me as a kid, besides 'Eggs,' 'Beyond the Mysterious Beyond, ' teaches kids to wonder what is beyond the beyond and gets kids to seek out knowledge. How cool is that? Don't get that in kids movies anymore and result to brain rot stuff.

I hate it when people say that "animation is only for kids." That is such a weak concept to make, especially when you look at other animations that have been around for a while. Such as Japanese Animation that has always been mainly a target for older kids and adults, and even Bakshi's animated Lord of the Rings. Hell, Siskel and Ebert commented on this when they looked at the animated Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and that animation was becoming a known fact that it just wasn't for kids as they both ended up both, loving that movie and regrated of never seeing it in theaters and not reviewing it at that time.

This is easily one of Bluth's (and Goldman's) best films, and definitely my favorite of his. Besides my bias reasons like nostalgia and my love of prehistoric animals, I just love how they handled its themes, atmosphere, animation, music, and characters. And even with those edits they made, I'd say the movie still did a great job with its storytelling. Though speaking of our lord Spike, there was one thing that always perplexed me. When Spike first hatched he was roughly the same size as Ducky, but then in mere seconds he grew to the same size as Littlefoot and Cera. Did that grass surrounding his nest make him larger when he ate it, or is that part of his secret God-powers? Either way, he's still the best spike-tail!

11:50 Waaaaaait a minute... You mean Littlefoot, after his fight with Cera, found the Great Valley... and then he went back to save them??? 😭 Oh my stars! Why did they ruin that? That's a major heroic moment! It would have been such a fantastic lesson to showcase him making that hard decision to leave the Valley and go find them even after their fight! And to have to choose between finding his Grandparents versus saving his friends too! Oh that would have been amazing to watch as a kid! I mean I really like the ending as is now, with the whole, "Don't give up even when it seems impossible." and "We did it together, as friends." lessons, but seeing that intended ending would have been epic. I guess in a way, the movie Dinosaur did follow that idea too, where Allodaur finds the nesting grounds and goes back to save the herd from the Carnotaurus. If you can't tell, I like dinosaur movies. 😁

The movie is a magnum opus of animation, the characters are more than memorable, and Judith Barsi will be missed and mourned. What I will say is that you should see what Kosperry does on KZbin and other social media platforms. If you want that re-animated cut of those missing scenes, he's the guy to animate the storyboards.

I gotta credit Don Bluth and his movie, to make me love dinosaurs when I was a kid, also no, I did not watched it on cinemas cause, I am 20 years old, so I watched it when it came out in DVD, and it sadly broke...cause of the MANY times that I rewatched it, cause little me loved it very much, but I also give credit to Steven Spielberg for making me love dinosaurs too, cause of his very good movie, Jurassic Park, even though on my first watch of the 1rst movie, it scared me, but I was 5 so could you blame me? So I watched again, when I was a bit older than 5 and I loved it very much! I also liked it sequels, yeah also the Jurassic World ones, don't come at me. To me the most glaring thing about this movie that hold it back from being a masterpiece is Mr. Narrator Captain Obvious coming in to talk when he doesn't need to and ruining a perfectly good emotional moment. Also why didn't the older dino that helped Littlefoot come to terms with his mother's death not go with him? It's been a few years since I rewatched the movie and I can't remember if an explanation was given in the movie. The movie is/was better in my memories. Like Balto 2.

6:32 Raisor, I think you are reading too much into that, the American mastodon (Mammut americanum) was a type of proboscidean distantly related to elephant and mammoths, it was one of the earliest fossil animals discovered in the US, heck in many languages including Spanish it is used a synonym for "gigantic".

I call this the best movie not completed, until I saw Thief and the Cobbler unfinished cut. But still it is an amazing concentrated movie. I am also so curious about the cut scenes, it would be great if anyone could do animatic but those takes time and it won´t be fully like Dons vision. But still cracier things have happened. It´s still annoying to know that Don was fighting a uphill battle all the time, his darker movies got turned into brighter and brighter ones until they lost intrests with the audience. He was forced to compete with Disney every time, sure American Tail beat Disneys but that was one movie, he did´t need to beat them all the time, they needed to distinguish that this movies were darker or rather more dramatic but amazing insted of only funny and bright. Oh well history is history I am glad for what Don gave us.
