The Land of No Men: Inside Kenya's Women-Only Village

Where the foothills of Mount Kenya merge into the desert, the people of Samburu have maintained a strict patriarchy for over 500 years in northern Kenya. That is, until 25 years ago, when Rebecca Lolosoli founded Umoja village as a safe haven for the region's women. Umoja, which means “unity” in Swahili, is quite literally a no man's land, and the matriarchal refuge is now home to the Samburu women who no longer want to suffer abuses, like genital mutilation and forced marriages, at the hands of men. Throughout the years, it has also empowered women in the districts surrounding Samburu to start their own women-only villages. Broadly visited Umoja and the villages it inspired to meet with the women who were fed up with living in a violent patriarchy.

Maybe try to qualify as a community so their government can give them grants, and with that many, they can improve their quality of life; the basic things a community in development needs are education, safety, economy, and health. Maybe they can try to build a place, especially for sick people? Maybe they can start with a volunteer program. There are a lot of tourists that go there, so if they open an international program for volunteers to go there and help them build houses and maybe help them with the economy, I don't know, they need a solid economy if they want this village to progress, best of lucks

Even in a place like this, women are at far greater risk from men, than they are from lions, or other wild animals. Also, you are running with the assumption that a man would put himself at risk, just to protect them, under such circumstances, which is not always the case. In this doco, there is a man stating that women will never confront danger. Yet he misses the irony that this is precisely what this village is doing. We just do things differently, as women.our priorities are to play the long game, for the benefit our own futures, and that of our children.
