Bruce died in that alley with his parents. It's sad but accurate portrayal of how trauma can change who we are.
@1stCallipostle2 ай бұрын
As traumatic and horrifying as that event was... Honestly he must've always been not okay or destined to be not okay, just born that way. He still did inevitably grow up in a privileged position with and incredibly supportive and caring parental figure of sorts. (Usually)
@nykthosacolyte5710Ай бұрын
@@1stCallipostletrauma doesn't care about status or wealth. The reality is you are almost certainly more privileged than Batman was after that night and for years to come. Trust me as someone that lost a parent only about a minute from where they lived, it's not something that really even dulls like others, the constant reminders are unavoidable and burrow deep into you even if there was literally nothing you could do. I know rich people that lost a loved one under the same roof and even a decade later they still look broken and takes almost nothing to make them break down now... In fact in some ways it's worse. When you have wealth, you can financially afford to feed into the cycle of self misery, and the misery makes you want to... When you are poor, you might get to be off for a little while but eventually you have to work again and you are forced into not constantly feeding it. Bruce didn't just lose his parents... He didn't even have other family there for him... He had Alfred, one person to try to stop him from looking into the abyss endlessly and who couldn't. No cousins, no aunts or uncles, etc. He was largely left to look into the abyss and he even escaped from Alfred to do so multiple times... Because that's what pain does.

Bruce died the same moment his parents died. Readers need to realize that Batman is his only identity and Bruce Wayne is his costume. The vow he made as a child was the true birth and beginning of Batman.
@rynobehnke82897 ай бұрын
Or here me out here. We can also just accept that "Bruce died that day" was a late retcon done to the characters somewhere in the late 80s to early 90s and for almost the entire golden, silver and bronze ages of comic was Bruce Wayne very much a person. And that not every one has to like this "let's make it darker and grittier" retcon.

@@rynobehnke8289 Batman, in cave: “Where is the new villain I-Beam getting the steel for his weapons? I’ll tell Wayne Ironworks to increase shipments.” Cut to Batman in cave: “Now to link the stolen steel to I-Beam!”
@johnthai61887 ай бұрын
@Babylonian-Cowboy i would argue that what died that day wasn't bruce, but the 8 year old bruce: what came out of that was The Batman. you know batman's whole mission statement of not wanting any kid go through what he did. without the death of his parents, bruce wouldn't make that mission statement in the first place and the new identity around it. this statement can work with the context of bruce being a father, son and a man.
@UpstandingCitizen17 ай бұрын
This isn't accurate. Bruce Wayne is who he is, the same way Batman is. They're both different sides of one person that work side by side with each other. His personalities between both of those identities bleed into each other frequently, it's clear his intentions are genuine regardless of who he is presenting himself as.
@brenscott54167 ай бұрын
In reality bruce is showing who he real is as batman. Its sad because he doesnt really care for being rich beyond what it can do for gotham with him as batman. The sad truth is that he likely associates bruce wayne as a face he shows the world where batman is the man behind the mask

Actually I think that Bruce Wayne is Bruce Wayne and Batman is Batman... Both of them share a body but they are entirely separate people. I used to think that it was a multiple personality disorder until I learned about Barbados from the dark nights metal comic book run.... Batman is a creation of Barbados. All the skills, techniques, knowledge, abilities, everything Batman is known for isn't even his! it's all on loan from Barbados. Even his indestructible "iron will"!!! This tells me that Batman may actually be a separate person from Bruce Wayne created by Barbados and doesn't even know that is his origin. He shares a Brain with Bruce Wayne but they are separate people...

@OniNoFro7 ай бұрын
Yup. It's come up in even academic literary discussions of the new mythology being created. I'm not kidding when I say there are post-sec schools offering courses on comic books. Essentially the discussions about this and other scenes boil down to how Batman and Superman are more alike than different. Chiefly, their 'secret identities are the mask they wear and their cape and symbol is who they are.

I think people overlook how Superman introduces himself. He says Clark Kent AND Kal-El. He sees himself as both the human farmboy he was raised to be and the kryptonian legacy he carries within himself. But just as telling, he doesn't say Superman. Superman is idolised, put on a pedestal and seen as better than all. But Clark doesn't see himself as better and so doesn't really identify as being Superman
@supercinos2297 ай бұрын
This also points out a concept I find very interesting. The truth can be subjective, it’s not always black or white. In Batman’s mind, he’s Batman. Not Bruce Wayne. That’s HIS truth, even if by human rules he’s Bruce Wayne.

@katamattyon7 ай бұрын
I dislike the idea that he's Batman first and Bruce Wayne is a 'mask'. Batman and Bruce Wayne are the same person, the Batman name wouldn't come about if that person hadn't first lived Bruce Wayne's upbringing. Clark's identity as Kal El is something he's a bit disconnected from since he doesn't remember growing up on Krypton, so it makes sense that Superman says both Clark and Kal, but for Batman, Bruce Wayne is a seamless part of the same person as Batman, it isn't something he has to think about separately
@DissonanceDisaster7 ай бұрын
Ah yes, the two people with literally no costume(Clark kinda has one but he really takes no steps to hide his identity. Like there’s no fucking way he’s never been seen on camera romping out of his regular clothes). In other words, it’s just Batman revealing his identity
@michaelboston97942 ай бұрын
I have a slightly different take on this. It's not that Bruce Wayne is "his real mask", it's that he has a clear separation between his two identities. When he is actively being Batman, that is all there is in the moment. So when BATMAN is holding the lasso of truth, he IS Batman. If she had used the lasso of truth on him when he was in his public persona of Bruce Wayne, he would have answer "Bruce Wayne". You have to remember that he keeps his mind and thoughts extremely compartmentalized. You can almost think of his brain as just a step or two below a super computer and when holding the lasso of truth, it can pretty much only access the folders that are already in view. Bit of a weird analogy, sure, but I feel it's rather apt for Batman/Bruce Wayne. Or maybe instead of folders, maybe think operating systems, Batman be Lynux while Bruce Wayne is Microsoft. Maybe that fits better...lol
