The worst part of the earth-bender scenes in the movie is they are prisoners but they are literally surrounded by earth. In the animated show the earth-benders were prisoners in a metal ship in the middle of the ocean!

it's like the director didn't bother to see the damn show....everything in the movie since i was a die hard Avatar fan, I was wondering what was going on myself seeing how I remember each episode and was wondering where the hell they were and why were there so many budget cuts.

@@NotMichael349 The funniest thing is the fire-benders in this movie. In the animated show fire-benders would be able to conjure up their own fire or enhance flames nearby using chi, which made them pretty unique compared to the other elements that require nearby sources of their elements. The movie fire-benders never conjure fire, they just use whatever is on a nearby torch or campfire they made with a lighter. So a significantly nerfed fire nation vs earth benders that could just cover their fire sources with one floating rock :/

That's the twist. Originally the movie was going to end and then it pans out and you see this being projected on a screen in a theater, and then it continues to pan out and you see this theater is in the middle of the fire nation but also the future for some reason. They forced Shamalan to cut this scene because it tested even worse with it included and then they cut their losses and put it out. I'm joking of course but who knows...

The fact that he removed the firebenders' ability to produce fire without a source undermines the ENTIRE CONFLICT of their world. The whole entire point of the firebenders being as powerful and dangerous as they were is that they are the _only_ benders who can produce and weaponize their element no matter what place or situation they are in (including underwater). How the fuck did the entire world get taken over by people whose element is in fact the _hardest_ to get hold of if you can't generate it yourself? Worldbuilding who????

One of the worst offenses to me was changing the fire nation to an Indian culture as opposed to the obvious Japanese/Mongolian influence of the show. Usually I don't care about race swapping characters if it's a side character or the actor makes sense for the role like the new Batman movie, but race swapping an entire nation of people just because you'd prefer them to be Indian? Wtf was Shyamalan thinking? *edit**: I know the fire nation's aesthetic is based on multiple east Asian cultures. Didn't mean to imply Japanese and Mongolian are the only influences.

Dude, the kid they played Aang wasn't really an actor or anything. When I was a kid, there was a shitty company that was offering "taekwondo" classes I was enrolled in. I remember when this movie came out, the dude that played Aang was a student at one of them who auditioned for the roll. Naturally, the company that was "teaching" the classes really pushed for all of the students to go see it. They legit picked the guy because he could spin a wooden staff, not because of his acting. The classes sucked so bad too. I distinctly remember them basically promoting anyone to the next level belt who was willing to pay them to be promoted. I remember being a young lad, it was nearly Christmas. An ad for this movie came on the tv and me and my brother having been big fans of the show got excited and told our mom we'd love to get that movie for Christmas, then our mom lit up and very giddily told us we could open one present before Christmas and brought us a wrapped up dvd with a big smile on her face. Me and my brother were super happy and watched the movie that night. We were so disappointed that it was only the first arc or whatever and let our mom know how disappointing it was. I agree. They did every single character dirty, not just by completely changing each and every one of their designs, but also making everyone pathetic and useless. Katara was a badass water bender even if she wasn't that good in Book 1, she was still brave and never backed out from a fight. And Sokka too, even though he wasn't a powerful bender or anything, he was also this quirky, funny character who was still around for comic relief and had his moments where he too fought. The worst rewrite I found was by far the Fire Nation turning Indian and them being basically useless when it comes to fire bending. Like wow, they now need a fire source nearby to fire bend? They can't produce fire on their own? Jeez, just thinking about this movie and how they raped my favorite childhood show gives me PTSD.
@walter4180
@walter4180 2 жыл бұрын
And an under rated (imo) part of TLA is that it humanizes the 'enemy' that is the fire nation really fucking well and it does it in the simplest way by just showing the audience that a lot of them are just normal people. Makes for some good gags too. Only person the show doesn't really do well is ironically the big bad of the fire nation himself in the fire lord. Probably my only major gripe of the show outside of nitpicks is that Ozai didn't get enough characterization and when we finally do some him doing things, it's the final battle. That said, literally everything else the show does right makes up for it. Oh and the spirit bending shit at the end was a bit hamfisted but eh, not a make or break critique.

I saw a behind the scenes clip where M Night Shyamalan admitted he thought fire benders were too OP in the show since they didn't need they're element near them to use it, so he wanted to "balance" them. Fire benders being surface level OP is kinda the point in the show. Also, fire benders become substantially weaker at night.... kinda like the thing they derive their power from goes away and they become weaker. Sadly a lot of the casting was Hollywood political favors being repaid hence the lack luster acting throughout.

We even saw my childhood neighbors in the same theater, and it was entirely packed. by the time the movie was almost done I vast majority of people just left the theater, including the said neighbors, when I asked them why with my 9 year old brain they were just like "its bad" and I agreed, it was nowhere near as good as I thought and hoped it would be and was probably the first time I was actually disappointed with a movie. But even so there was one thing that made me go, no, theirs a chance it could all be made well: the kaiju scene from the series. I was SO looking forward to that scene where you saw aang going around the nation destroying all the fire benders in the form of a giant fish kaiju monster and I was SO looking forward to seeing that in live action in cgi! this! I thought. THIS would redeem the movie in my 9-year-old or so mind at the time, I just had to wait till the end and get to see the big climactic ending! I'm pretty sure I even said to said neighbor at least you gotta wait for the Kaiju scene but they left with their kid anyway. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndddddddddddddddd they replaced it with a giant tsunami wave. fuck you for destroying my 9 year old dreams to see a giant kaiju fight on the big screen for the first time movie.

Theres a part of the show where she has to stop a underground library from collapsing for at least 5 to 10 minutes. We're talking about what is probably upwards of 20 to 30 tons. The shows strongest water benders were capable of bending the blood inside the human body. The waterbenders in the movie can't manage to lift a glass of water. There is no way anyone involved watched the show for any amount of time. We're talking about going from some of the greatest animated television of all time to one of the worst movies ever made.

This movie isn't even a "so bad it's good" style film. In order to be a "so bad it's good" film, the creator must exercise near total ineptitude. This often results in jarring lines, odd story beats, horrendous lighting and sound mixes, etc. This movie meets none of that criteria. It's literally just one giant exposition dump till the film ends. There's nothing entertaining about it.
@dragonbane44

In order to be "so bad its good" it must atleast be interesting if only because of jarring lines or its delivery, and the rest of the things you said. One another key thing is, in such movies, you can atleast feel that the actors or the director were putting effort and were showing passion. This avatar movie was bland. Everything is boring. Actors can't emote. Writers arent bothered to write dialogues. This movie is just bad. I could not watch it beyond first 20 minutes.

My favorite behind the scenes fact is that Shyamalan loved the Kyoshi Warriors so much, that he filmed like hours and hours of content with them. It was to a point where like 60% of the movie was going to involve the Kyoshi Warriors. But for some reason he decided to cut them completely from the movie, even after loving them so much.

While I also do hate this movie there is one thing you missed charlie as do many others. As funny as it is in the scene with the 6 Earthbenders moving the small rock is that they aren't actually movin that rock. If you look the rock is being moved by the lone bender, closer to the camera, into position then fired off at the Fire Benders. Those 6 Earthbenders got the same as Katara where the effects guys just forgot to make them actually bend something :P
