I live in Zone 6a. I didn't do Fall planters this year because my summer plantings were still in full bloom. 3rd week of November, I finally removed summer and built my Christmas/winter displays. Excited to see something new and fresh, but it broke my heart to remove the summer displays because 90% of the urns/boxes etc. were still putting on a lovely show. Yesterday I mowed my lawn for the final time, and I was surprised to see I now have 2 forsythia in bloom! You are right, this has been an odd year, not only am I confused but so are my plants🤔😅

Same! I’m zone 6 and I had coleus happily living in my pots until Nov 22nd 🤷🏻♀️ The coleus was a dark red \ maroon color and the flowers in the pots were lemony yellow. I didn’t even bother buying mums or pansies this fall. Saved time and money 🎉

I think the space where you removed the trees actually looks much nicer. Kind of room to breathe feeling.

Thanks for sharing! My little pine shrubs and seedlings have been struggling with the extra moisture all season. Winter is coming here, too. I'm in SE Iowa, and it went from 55º on Sunday to 23º last night. My last native tallgrass prairie project is mulching new trees with wood mulch and cage and emptying the rain barrels. So far, I've only seen one lone deer. Thanks for sharing!

Your native maple is Acer rubrum. The bark will "shingle" or turn up in narrow strips on older trees and I see it doing that. Also look for three points on the leaves; think r-e-d. Acer sacharum's bark twists and turns up the trunk and leaves have five points for s-u-g-a-r.

Wow, Magnus is getting so big! He's adorable. I had the same problem in NE Ohio, planters were still looking good and it was so hard pulling the annuals but I don't want to have to try making winter arrangements in frozen pots. Happy Thanksgiving Erin and Rich (ooops). No problem, if anybody read the article about your beautiful garden in Midwest Living, they'd know Mr. Much More Patient's name. 😉

In your new area consider installing native understory shrubs like silky or grey dogwood (grey has lovely white drupes) or one of the serviceberries - all are spring blooming.
@TheImpatientGardener2 күн бұрын

SO sorry you're losing serviceberries- they're such great trees and shrubs. But I love the pink stems and white drupes on that dogwood. I stopped the video 3:54 to say have both trees. I thought when the car drove by that you needed an understory tree that blocks your view of the road standing in just that spot. Not blocking the veg garden view. A dogwood blooming there would be visible from all the distances in early spring and the Japanese maple would more appreciate the shade from the south and west sun/wind.

Try spreading milorganite over your yard and beds. I discovered it looking for a fertilizer for my hostas. At first I just sprinkled it around the deer's favorite plants but this past year my husband spread a bag over the whole yard. No deer this year! It also fertilized the grass so it was a win/win in my book!

Where the tree was cut down and the stump remains, you could put a tall something: planter, statute, garden table (over the stump), etc. I was thinking Japanese maples just as you said it! Thank-you for continuing to do these garden strolls as the garden winds down for winter. It's encouraged me to think about what still looks good in our garden, when my tendency is to be focused on the gaps. We had our first snow this week too (UK, West Midlands), but many of our plants are confused by the long warm autumn we've had and we have some spring, summer, autumn and winter-flowering plants in bloom all at once. Our early daffodils already have about three inches of foliage up.

It was a great year for me with my plants. This area had a hard frost, wilting many plants. It is the first year with the transfered flowers AND the flowers and plants in the new section. I learned a lot. I already transplanted some of the plants for proper 'sunshine requirements '. I am going to see if the plants are going to 'like' where I placed them at in the spring.

Thanks for tour & gift guide, so helpful! It’s been a strange year for sure. I planted a couple of supertunia bubblegum in my front flower bed & they still look great, even when we got that snow earlier in the week. Hard to pull them but it’s time 😢

Very nice tour! I have also been spoiled here by the mild fall here in Ohio zone 6b. It is now starting to get cold, but not quite cold enough to take my wave or Supertunias(the Supertunias have actually been cleaned out, but they are still blooming on the pile where I threw them on, lol 😂). The wave petunias are still going, as are my grape lantanas, and coreopsis (which is perennial, but still blooming) in my window boxes. Additionally, until this past Wednesday, I still had my canna lily blooming outside, that has since been brought inside to continue growing under lights. Unfortunately, it looks like whatever’s left will be toast later this week when it looks like a big freeze might be coming after Thanksgiving. It’s kind of bittersweet, but I’m also kind of ready to finish getting things to bed for winter.

Your garden is so lovely even in late fall. It has good bones as they say. I love that Japanese forest grass! Gotta try it. My window box still looks great too. It has Black and Blue Salvia in it and pink geraniums… wave petunias trailing and a pink/burgundy coleus which did wilt from frost finally last night. Yes salvias are extremely cold and frost tolerant. I love them and plant a lot of them. I am in zone 5/6 central Illinois. Love your videos. Really liked the one about garden gifts.

I’m in 8a and my Supertunias, zinnias and nasturtiums are still blooming. We’re getting a cold snap next week so they’ll be done, I guess, but it’s supposed to be a mild winter so rather than pulling my Supertunias out I think I’ll just cut them back and see if they’ll overwinter. I don’t think I’ll do fall containers at all this year since my summer containers lasted so long. I’m about to put up Christmas decor so there’s no point. Annuals have gotten so expensive I think doing just the summer containers from here on out is the way I’ll go.
