He witnessed the horrors of war which affected him the rest of his life. When I was 12 years old, i played bugle in a drum corps. The local American Legion Post asked me to play taps at a soldier's funeral. Then they asked if I'd do another. And another, and another. Some of those being laid to rest were veterans of the Spanish American War. Some were veterans of WWI,. Others were veterans of WWII, and the Korean conflict (this was the mid to late 50's). To happen upon your tribute this evening has filled me with rememberance of things past. I cannot thank you enough for this amazing acknowledgement of the average person who, when called upon, answers. Billy Boyd's tribute to the Tokien's epic stories was the perfect choice for the music. Thank you, and thank you to the veterans, one and all...

I knew a civilian carpenter captured in the first weeks of the war at Midway. More than three and a half years of slave labor and starvation. An underground coal mine. A couple other sites. At the end of the war a clay pit making bricks on Honshu. Looked like the Auschwitz survivors. I’ll leave out more. A few days after Hirohito’s surrender, parachutes from B-29’s. Food. He said it still made him angry when Americans said ‘I’m hungry’, when they mean ‘I’m not full’. I still try not to say it, though sometimes I do. M.K paid his family through the war. Widows after The War were offered jobs. The survivors were given jobs ‘as long as they could push a piece of paper from one side of the desk to the other’ the saying went. When he recovered, as much as he could he went back to work as a carpenter and a pile buck.

My father fought in New Guinea, my mother wanted to join the women's air corps (WAC) but couldn't afford her final fee to get her pilot's license. She will be 99 this October, and is truly among the last of this greatest generation. They take with them the last generation to know commitment to country and others, and working together for a common cause, honor in personal courage and values, and faith in Almighty God. How sad to see them go, one by one, quicker and more and more each day.....Won't see another generation like this, EVER again.

Thank you for such a beautiful tribute. My father and 4 of my uncles fought in WWIi. My dad plane was shot down and a metal rod passed through his body and thank God did not strike any vital organs and he survived. I remember one particular story my mom told of her brother, my Uncle Joe, who was in the army. Just before he was sent overseas his troop with many others stopped in San Jose and he was able to attend a family dinner with four of his friends. They sat around the dinner table with my grandparents and the other children to have one last home meal before leaving. Two weeks later my uncle was transferred into the engineering core as he knew how to work on vehicles. The four buddies that he was with at that final dinner were all killed in action. I will forever be grateful for those who fought for our freedom. They truly gave their all!!!

Thank you so much, beautifully done, I am 84 years old in 2 weeks, I remember, My Dad and my Mom's three brothers, all served, we were so blessed to have all four make it home, Each one carried emotional scars, from what they endured and saw.One of my uncles served on a navy destroyer, he lost friends after the ship was hit, He only had this conversation with my Dad, which I overheard. I pray, with what is going on today, their service will not have been in vain! RIP every single one!

I am a person who comes from a family who has been serving America since we first gained our independence. I don’t say this to brag even though I am proud of my family and their willingness to serve for mine and other peoples freedoms . I am saying this because I love seeing things that honor our soldiers who have fallen, were missing, captured, returned home and still serving. This song brought tears to my eyes. It is so beautiful. Thank you

As a Combat Engineer Veteran of Desert Storm, my heart and praise goes out to all of these men and women. One of the things that is not told is the key factor of Combat Engineers on D-Day. Watch the "Longest Day" towards the end of the movie and it will give a glimpse of what my brethern did that day 80 years ago. My parents were very close friends to many WW II vets and I remember their stories. One of our neighbors served in the Pacific. He gave me his Japanese bayonet he got over there. And another close friend gave me an interview when I was in 5th grade of his service as a B-24 Waist Gunner who came back to be an instructor for the USAAF. I miss them all. Essayons!
