I played both and I agree that this game looks as mediocre as Ico. Ico was important when it was released because it did something different and explored narratives in videogames in a new way, but it has always been really bad mechanically, with annoying controls, bad cameras and poor puzzle designs. Most people are willing to forgive that (myself included), but it's just that Last Guardian doesn't really seems like it brings anything new to save it

I don't see why Doom is considered one of the best games of the year, and frankly I'm tired of hearing it. The campaign is pretty boring with no context (killing the shit out of demons and exploring decrepit hallways is only fun for so long) and multiplayer is ruined by CoD bullshit. I like that it has a generally old school gameplay style, but aside from that Doom is a pretty forgettable, mediocre game.

I can't even argue that, I've been a fan of the Xbox since the first one and all they've really done since 2011 is ruin everything I liked about it. Halo was my favorite game ever but now it's trash, people used to see Halo as one of the titans of the industry, now people laugh and scoff at it. Gears Judgement killed the franchise, and 4 was too "meh" to revive it. Forza is cool but niche. All other exclusives have been too fucking weak to mention. PS4 now has all the console features that made the first two Xboxes more appealing, and hasn't killed all it's flagship titles. It's more popular in Asia, and has a ton of variety with Pro and VR. It's fucking sad how much of a travesty the Xbox One is, hopefully the Scorpio can save the Xbox brand but if not then I doubt there's much hope left.

Glosses over the fact the framerate on base PS4 is horrendous, it's not even a consistent 30fps. Drops to like 20fps and hovers around 25fps most of the time. Utterly unplayable. On the Pro you can choose between 1080p and better framerate (but still only 30fps) or 4k and a framerate much like the base PS4.

I don't mean to be the Ubisoft employee here, but playing Shadow of the Colossus with a sub 30 fps frame rate was actually far more immersive and employed a greater sense of scale than buttery 60 fps. Don't get me wrong, I get nauseous from sub 50 fps First Person games, and just don't enjoy sub 50 third person games, but for Ico games, it's different.

Well, everybody is talking about the camera and control issues, but nobody seems to remember that SotC had similar problems and that didn't affected too much the overall experience. In the particular case of the camera, SotC camera was weird and interesting at the same time. The engine was coded to always try to create aesthetically complex angles to create awesome compositions with the camera in real time. It worked really well most of the times, but some times, especially with indoor combats, the engine failed to decide how to position the camera while compensating for the colossus' excessive movement and wall and ceilling collisions at the same time. It was the price to pay for a dynamic AI controlled camera. For what I'm hearing and reading it seems that TLG went for a similar approach. If that's the case, then yes. The camera IS weird, but it was design with the goal of creating some beautiful shots as well. In SotC I did had some frustration with the camera, but it wasn't a constant, and the shots it created when it worked are still tattoed in my memory. I didn't played TLG yet, so I can't express an standalone opinion, but if this is the approach they took (which is most likely), then the frustration will come more from a lack of custom to this unorthodox camera design (I don't know about other studio with this particular approach to camera controls) that from a bad design. Something similar happened with SotC and its horse controls. They are maybe the best and most accurate horse controls in the history of the medium, but its unorthodox approach cost it a ton of critics.

Yes! This is well said. The type of "game" that ICO, SotC and TLG were are an "acquired taste." Just like how there are games that use a single button and ones that have no story. These games use a certain dissonance between the player and the world they've been invited to explore. You're not given responsive control, all the answers (even at the end), the most intentionally cooperative AI or even gameplay that is very clear. You are simply a single guest in Ueda's games. It's not your typical game franchise where the world gives you all the power and control you demand to get what you want out of it and that understandably bothers a lot of people. As someone who wants to be an animal trainer someday, it's a similar feeling of reward when you figure out how to communicate or translate your intentions with Trico. It wants to constantly remind you that you're not only element at play in the game with its own mind.

I agree with this. Sometimes the controls feel a bit ropey in Shadow Of The Colossus, but it seems to make the experience feel more real. It makes the game better because the controls aren't super responsive and precise. Im pretty sure its actual designed to be that way.

So a game with bad controls, camera, and broken mechanics gets a 9 because it's pretty and has a heartfelt relationship between boy and beast. Even going as far make excuses for the bad mechanics. I wanted this to be good, but most of the good reviews it's getting seem to be derived from nostalgia of Ico, and clouded by the charm of the game.

mike runtal Fallout 4 had game breaking bugs? Not in my experience. I also didn't think it was great. The faction quests were extremely redundant and mindlessly endless. And yep, gameplay matters A LOT, so when the gameplay is marred by bad controls, camera, and broken mechanics, then the game isn't very good. The thing that bothers me the most is that the game could've, and after the time in development, should've been a masterpiece. But it's not. Yet it's getting scored by some like it is, simply because of its lineage. IGN scored it the way it should be.

I haven't played this game yet; but, just from looking at it and how it plays, it really is a special addition to the evolving video gaming industry. 9/10 would seem fair to me. Ueuda has been one of my favorite video game designers and artists in video gaming history. I hope this game will solidify his presence in the industry and help him make a game that he has more control of.

the game is fantastic but BEWARE, the trico can be so unresponsive to the point of making the game unplayable. Nevertheless, this title will be remembered and referenced for years to come

yu guys didnt discuss the camera problems throughout the game n especially in smaller places. or was tht already factored into tht 9?? its something all the other reviews ive seen have brought up. but if you're giving it a 9 despite tht, then maybe its something tht didnt bother yu guys much?
