The point with Alfred's thought process is that he's a visionary, a frail man that suffers from a sickness but is still able to use his knowledge and wits... he basically seeks to create England by uniting all of the christian kingdoms in order to share culture and protect the lands from foreign invaders.

Alfreds wife was an arranged marriage like most monarchies back in the day. So of course a marriage born not of love but of royal convenience will not have a strong bond. Alfred will stray because he didn't have a chance at other coochie when he was younger. Only his faith would stop his lustful ways.
@granddaddyotaku6364 жыл бұрын
Alfred is a visionary. In history he is regarded as the first true king of all Saxons. Also, his work and successes leads to the first true kingdom of England and sets the steps in motion for the future of all kingdoms. You can say Alfred was the founding father of the future. He paved the way for what was to come. We are meant to root for him because the future owes its existence to him in a lot of ways. Of course this is slightly fictionalized so how the show goes about telling this story will still be surprising and take interesting turns you will not expect! :D it’s gonna be good 👍
@dakingataleedo4 жыл бұрын
He led with his mind in the show and probably in real life too. And just like in this show, most of his successes were probably because of men we will never know the names of. Kings were rarely if ever on the front line in any battle.

Actually it is Athelstan, his grandson is the 1st true king of all saxons, he is the one who manage to unite all faction in England during that period. Alfred more like a visionary, his vision is the 1st to unite England, but he didn't manage to do it.

Just so you know...Catholics and Protestants are sects of Christianity. All monotheistic religions are inherently less tolerant than polytheistic ones. Different pagan groups would frequently add or merge deities with one another because its easier to accept a new aspect of a different culture you may find novel. As opposed to monotheists, who's whole world view is threatened by the concept of a different deity, or even worshiping the same deity the "wrong" way.
@caiptainawesome8074 жыл бұрын
That relay isn't true, tbh. Polytheistic religions were also prone to extreme acts of violence against hose different from them. The difference between monotheistic religions and polytheistic religions is that polytheistic religions made the argument that "your gods are weaker than ours." The most famous is the Romans persecuting Christians, but Rome rather famously did it to most other people and cultures as well. The best bet was to entirely subject as a Roman protectorate, but that eventually subsided as well. Greeks, the various Germanic, Gaulic, and Norse cultures did it. Muslims, Sub-Saharan African religions, Celtic religions in the british isles, native American cultures, etc. This isn't unique to any religion, type of religion, or even a lack of religion. People find excuses to kill others regardless of faith, or lack thereof.
@kyroking99342 жыл бұрын
It really isn’t Daniel. Maybe a bit more research will avert your ignorance.
@aaronws95612 жыл бұрын
Daniel, in many ways polytheistic religions were more “flexible” than monotheistic religions, but they aren’t any more “tolerant”. I think you’re thinking of the ease with which polytheistic religions adapt other deities to their own, but this isn’t tolerance any more than the Incan deities being adapted to Roman Catholicism was tolerant. See the difference?

25:23 The protestants did plenty of oppression themselves though, just look at Irish history. And plenty of people call the Irish Potato famine a genocide - the blight was a natural disaster, the famine and deaths of Irish catholics that followed it was a result of criminal neglect from the absentee English protestant landlords. And there's a reason why it was such a big deal that JFK was the first openly catholic president, they were looked down upon in America for years. Don't get me wrong, I'll never deny the atrocities committed by the Catholic Church, but the protestants did just as much harm and through more than simply the witch trials.

Every belief ends up with that. Because of my ancestors' history, i learnt many diffirent religion ends up to trying to destroy other. For example, believing eternal blue sky was very common thing for Asian nomads and while someone was discussing why they try to conqueur everywhere they were tell them this "What why? Such non sense. Eternal blue sky give me the mission of conqueuring everywhere that i can see. I'm his flesh and blood in the earth.". Also there is Muslims have ghazas cihads type of things, Catholics who crusades even on Orthodox cities, Shamanist/animalist people who says he is the son of great white wolf who will unite all people under his flag type of things. Those are mostly for justifying their action but time flows and people forgot why their ancestors did. After that, it just become a divine mission for them. Then they started to dehumanize people who don't look like them and that's where Colonists started to bring suffer for everybody except white Europeans who are "human".
